*** Update: Stretch Goal! *** As of Feb 3 we've reached the original $5k goal! Thank you!! But it's not over. If we can get to $7k by the end of the campaign I'll record and include two bonus tracks for everyone download-- two cover songs that have been very popular at my shows but that I've never recorded.
I'm Brent Arnold, cellist and composer. I created the cello music for Louis CK's show Louie and I have worked with a wide range of musicians and artists all over the world. I'm finishing a new album of very unorthodox cello music, some acoustic, some wildly electronic, and I'm hoping you'll preorder it here.
And I've collaborated with some of my dear friends like Reggie Watts, the Antlers, Simone White, and Filastine, to make an exclusive Kickstarter-only album that we're offering as a premium for donors to this project.
For any contribution of your choosing, you'll be able to download a pre-release version of my album when it's finished early in 2013. For a bit more, you can receive things like the beautifully-made CD version, a download of the collaborations album, my previous record An Albatross and a Half, signed prints of the fantastic album art by Shanna Maurizi, VIP tickets to the release party, fresh baked bread, and eternal thanks! Read on for more info.
Thanks so much for your support. It means a lot.
With such a quantity of music all around us, it’s easy to forget that making original art takes time and dedication. There's an increasing expectation that music should be free and just a click away, and the finances of being a musician seem to get trickier all the time. During this Kickstarter campaign, I'm making this music, which I've worked on for the last two years, available for whatever donation you see fit. If you can contribute more, you can get some lovely rewards-- and most importantly, your money will go to the last bit of recording, mixing, mastering, and pressing this album, with amounts over the goal going to promoting it. And in a bigger sense, contributing helps create a future where independent and unusual music can thrive.
The New Album
This new music I've been working on goes deeper into a sort of 'hidden music' of the cello, music that seems to me somehow intrinsic to the instrument, that can be found only through time and patience and practice. The cello as so much more than a collection of its clichés and cultural baggage.
This search has taken me deeper into the possibilities of both the acoustic and the amplified cello. For the solo acoustic pieces, I am exploring sound as well as notes-- texture and color and weight, things that can't easily be captured in notes on a page. And on other pieces I go further than ever into electronic manipulation of the cello, accessing other worlds through amplification and stomp-box electronics. I use uncommon techniques such as guitar-like fingerpicking, folding in inspirations from North African and Arabic music, especially the sound of the oud and the guembri.
I recorded in some striking and solitary spaces, including a castle in France, the Denmark Arts Center in rural Maine, and Ryder Farm in Connecticut. These places lent their own atmosphere and inspirations.
The Exclusive Collaboration Album
Over the years, I’ve had the chance to work closely with incredible artists all over the world, and they are coming together to help me make this thing special. This collection of tracks features me working with each of these artists, in the form of jams, remixes, cover songs, and other collaborations, most of which are not available anywhere else. Check out the lineup:
- Singer, beatboxer, comedian, looper, lepidopterist Reggie Watts
- Indie rock super-darlings The Antlers
- Brilliant songstress Simone White
- Transnational bass music nomad Filastine
- Haunting cinematic chamber rock band Lullabies for Falling Empires
- Virtuoso percussionist Matt Kilmer (Louie, Lauryn Hill, Simon Shaheen)
- Sci-fi banjo genius Baby Copperhead
- Rock champions California King
- Writer, singer, composer, violinist Lindsay Cuff
- Violist and composer Jessica Pavone (Anthony Braxton, Mary Halvorson)
- Alexandra Duvekot and Thijs Havens of Saelors
- Poet Geoffrey Nutter, winner of Colorado Prize and Verse Press Prize
The album will feature artwork by the brilliant Shanna Maurizi, making this an artifact that is beautiful to hear and to see and to hold.
Handmade Chocolate Truffles
A box of chocolate truffles, handmade by our friend Victoria Yee Howe and our team, in an assortment of her signature flavors, including a very smoky Lapsang Souchong (this one is amazing).
My bread is no joke. Donors who want something special can choose from the Regular (classic crusty round loaf), or one of the following specialties: Oat, Kalamata Olive, Roasted Garlic, or Oat/Fig.
Tickets to the CD Release Show & Party
Details are still being finalized but the release party will be this Spring (2013) in New York City, and will feature Brent Arnold performing solo and with some very special guests.
Thank you so much for your support!
Risks and challenges
- If, due to scheduling difficulties, any of my partners needs more time to finish a track for the collaborative album premium, we will send download codes for the finished tracks on time, and an additional download code for the remainder shortly thereafter.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
