Cosmos With Venus is a story of love and loss and all the ways this can come into our lives. Eren a both confident and confused young woman is about to be asked for her hand in marriage. Her father has unfortunately passed away, therefore cannot be present for her traditional rite of passage.
All the wonderful Turkish women around Eren are preparing for this exciting time, however Eren has much uncertainty in her heart and she doesn’t know why. This is when Venus the Goddess of love comes to visit her to take her on a journey to try and place where this uncertainty is coming from. Venus sets up camp in Eren's shed, which is transformed into the iconic Pink Room, and takes her back to three of the most pivotal love memories from her past in attempts to provide the information Eren desires.
The stylistic inspiration behind the memories stems from the concept of magical realism; a sense of another world seen through an extended dream sequence which also has a sense of familiarity that plays on elements of Eren's subconscious.
Elifcan Yazgun is a filmmaker from North London. With a strong identification of her Turkish background, she creates stories and characters that explore cultural boundaries, and questions the relationship between nationality and ethnicity.
Why this film?
'The powerful feminine energy that has encapsulated my life is a constant presence in the way I express myself artistically. Combined with influences from my Turkish culture, I am intrigued in telling the stories of the women that have raised me, and representing a fresh demographic on the screen. The world of magic and mysticism is a shared interest for many Middle Eastern and Mediterranean women, therefore I wanted to create a film that explores this world through familiar eyes; and that's when Eren's story manifested. It's not just a story about women, or being Turkish, but also the inner struggle of identity that is a consequence to being raised with two cultures. Turkish women have a story to tell, and this is mine.' - Elifcan on Cosmos with Venus
Inside the world of Cosmos
The Pink Room...
Venus The Goddess of Love
The character of Venus is a playful rendition of the classic Goddess of love, beauty and procreation. Effortlessly fabulous and beautiful, she is a complete stereotype of how the stories have depicted her. She is endlessly affectionate towards Eren, but her sarcastic sense of humour gives a sense of her dynamic persona. Venus doesn't realise that there can be more to life than romantic love, so throughout the journey her perspective widens with Eren challenging her along the way.
The story of 'Cosmos' unfolds with our protagonist, Eren. She is fun, smart, and has shaped her life around her love for astronomy. Raised in London by her huge Turkish family, she has constructed an identity for herself that combines the environment she grew up in with her cultural background and traditions. Before she meets Venus, Eren has a lot of uncertainty about getting married, which doesn't make sense to her because she is sure about her feelings. She believes that love can exist in more ways than just romance, and uses this to navigate through her memories to find what she is looking for.

Risks and challenges
Creating two huge sets is definitely our biggest challenge for the film! We have a brilliant production design team that have been working non-stop in order to design the 'Pink Room' and an 'Observatory' for the film. Due to the magical realism aspect of the film, we want to make sure our sets give an extraordinary fee, and this in turn creates a lot of thinking, designing and creating! With the money raised we plan on using this to buy materials, furniture, paint, wallpaper, rugs and all things cosmos to accomplish this, below you can see the drawings of the sets.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
