100 new cards for the Xi Cards strategic card game
5 years ago our little indie project "Xi Cards" was released. It's a strategic card game with a unique resource management system. It features some pretty awesome art. It's simple to learn, but has the capacity to provide huge variety in games, thanks to the range of viable decks you can build. There's nothing random about what you purchase - once you buy the packs you have all the cards we offer, so it's kind of a game in a box. There's information about our original game on our website xicards.com, or you can find out what the community says at Board Game Geek https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/148432/xi-cards, where it is sat with a happy 7/10 rating (at time of writing).
We would also recommend Cardboard Cultist's video review of the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJWIwLs3J-Q
This project, Xi Advanced, is our long-in-development expansion to the original Xi Cards core game. It features 100 new cards and adds a whole bunch of new potential deck builds and strategies to the game.
We have already sorted all 100 pieces of artwork and all 100 cards are designed. This kickstarter is to pay for the manufacture of the game in time for our target release, the UK Games Expo at the start of June 2019.
"The artwork for Xi is quite simply stunning" - Polyhedron Collider Review
99 out of 100 of the cards in Xi Advanced feature rules text. There are a whole bunch of new themes amongst the cards, as well as new cards for your favourite core decks:
Power cards with a drawback: Xi Advanced features a lot of cards which are really powerful for a low time cost... but they have a big drawback. For instance, "Hired Muscle" is a brutal 1 Time 3 Damage 3 Life Points unit, but every time it skirmishes you have to discard a card.
Long Term Strategies: Some cards do very little initially, with the potential for a big reward later in the game. "Slow Summoning" takes 14 turns to play a unit from your library for you. If you, and the card, survive that long then you'll get a big ol' beast for a very low cost!
New Counter Play: Xi Advanced features a range of new "prevent" cards that can help stop that annoying combo your opponent keeps using on you. They're cheaper than the equivalents in the core game, but only work against certain types of card.
Combos for your core decks: Some Xi Advanced cards specifically refer to cards from the core set. For instance "Hoyd's Corruption" makes "Hoyd, the Wombat" into a powerful celestial unit!
...plus even more wombats, more statements, more Archo cards, more celestial cards, more shadow cards... more everything!
The Kickstarter Rewards
We'll aim to produce all of our rewards by Friday 31st May, in time for the UK Games Expo show at Birmingham NEC where we have a stand.
If you're going to the UKGE show, we can give you your rewards there and there's no delivery cost for you. If you're not going to the show we're happy to post stuff to you, although you will have to pay for shipping. We'll post cards after the show, so you can expect them late June/early July.
What can you get
Our cards are high quality full colour 305µm corona with a plastic varnish finish, printed by Cartamundi UK. They fit comfortably into standard deck protectors or work equally well just stacked normally. Our cards have a unique curve in the top right corner which helps you keep your deck all the same way up.
Limited Edition Card - Wombat Battle Construct
Every kickstarter reward comes with one copy of the limited edition "Wombat Battle Construct" card. This card is not part of the normal set and will not be easy to get hold of after the kickstarter is finished. We know that wombat decks were one of the most popular builds in the core set, and the battle construct adds some real strength to these builds.
You can have your Wombat Battle Construct card signed or unsigned - just let us know your preference in a comment when finalising your reward.
Xi Advanced Pack
Our Xi Advanced pack will contain all 100 cards from the Xi Advanced set in 1 neat tuckbox. The set has a mix of wind, ember, aqua, stone, shadow and celestial cards and has cards which can compliment any type of deck. There are also some special cards which summarise key game rules, help you track your time, and can be used as filler cards if you want to represent an idea you've got!
Core Packs (part of the "all cards" and "every card" rewards)
These are the original 4 packs containing the Xi Cards core 200 cards. You can see full lists of the cards in each pack on our website here:
Each core pack can be used as a stand-alone deck for a new player, so with 2 packs you can open up and start playing immediately!
We know the artwork is a popular feature of the game, so we have asked Jordan Saia, the Xi Cards artist, to do a special poster piece to celebrate the release of Xi Advanced. We'll print this new art on A1 poster paper and send it out to you, with the option of it being signed by the game's creators.
For those who really want to splash out, we will produce a "photobook" - a hardback glossy collection of some of our favourite artwork from the advanced and core sets. This will also include some comments from the game designers as to why they like those particular pieces, and it can be signed if you would like it to be.
For those who really really want to splash out we can offer a custom card. We'll take your rules and your card title and we'll have it produced properly with artwork from Jordan Saia. If we think the card is balanced, we may even include it as an extra in the Xi Advanced pack.
Who We Are
Xi Cards Ltd is, in reality, a one man firm supported by some really awesome friends and family. We're based in Berkshire, UK, and we love board games, card games and all things geeky. The Xi Cards game was created by Chris Nonweiler and Mark Ledbury, with ideas from a whole team of people who are listed in our official rules.
Risks and challenges
We're fairly confident that we can work with Cartamundi to get this prepared in time for UKGE 2019, but you can never be 100% sure.
We're a tiny company - players who opt for postage rather than collection will have to wait a little bit into June/July for delivery, but we'll do our very best.
