Precision machined playable dice in two different sizes offered in a wide variety of different metals!

This is my second Kickstarter project after successfully launching Precision machined Dice (link), precision balanced casino style dice. It showed a great deal of success and I want to give all my past backers my most heartfelt thank you! I am completely humbled by your support of me and my project, and due to numerous suggestions and lessons learned I am ready to offer precision machined playing game dice! Thank you everyone SO much! 

My Playable gaming dice feature chamfered edges as well as corners. Several versions were made, tested, and calculated to provide the correct amount of chamfer to produce the best roll possible on any table top surface, even glass! They feel great in the hand, sound great on the table, and roll beautifully. 

These will be made of only pure solid quality material, precision machined using advanced CNC technology. Not molded, not hollow, not plated, only 100% solid metal. 

For this project I am going to be offering the dice in two different sizes and in five different materials: Aluminum, anodized in Blue, Red, Black, or Silver/Clear, and possibly one more color option! Also available, Brass, Copper, Stainless Steel, and Titanium. The sizes are 16mm (standard monopoly size) and 1/2 inch (Farkle to-go). Below are the estimated weights of each die for both sizes:

Why I need your help

Even though I have the design down in virtual form, to get the dice into my hands I need to commission a local machine shop to make them for me. It is incredibly important to me that these be made here in the USA and even more so by a local company. 

The cost for machining at a high tolerance adds to the price, as well does all the costs for the high quality material I would like to offer. This is why I need your help, to pay for the raw material and the labor needed to make these become reality! 

As most of my previous backers would know, I am against launching a half baked product, or one that is not proven to preform to its high standards, these dice are definitely not the exception.

In addition to the high quality material I am investing a six step quality control program that each and every die will go through to ensure you are receiving the best possible. These steps were the same taken to deliver my Precision Dice. (white gloves and everything ;) )

I also want to apologize for so many reward tiers, but they will help me  organize the orders better and ship you your dice faster!

I have for offer all my dice as add ons, you can find the prices below to add on to your current order. he prices below already include shipping. For the pair of aluminum dice you will be able to specify color in the survey at the end, you will also be able to specify dice size (16mm or 1/2 inch) at the end int he survey. The aluminum dice that come with the game pack will by default be silver/clear anodized. 

{Because real quality can be proven}

In a single, solid rigid body, the Centroid defines the geometric center of an object. In the case of a perfect cube, the Centroid exists at the middle point inside the cube equidistant from each of the six faces of the cube. For a rigid body that has a consistent density throughout its structure, the Centroid also defines the Center of Mass. For a rigid body within a uniform gravitational field, the Center of Mass is equivalent to the Center of Gravity of that body.

For the special case of a die, rotational motion becomes important in the dynamics of a rotating cube or a cube (dice) in play. Rotational dynamics depend not on the Center of Mass but the rotational inertia or Mass Moment of Inertia. The Moment of Inertia measures the resistance of an object to rotational acceleration about an axis. Should the density or mass vary in distance from the rotational axis, the Moment of Inertia defines the resistance of that object to rotational acceleration.

When I decided to design Metal Dice for Playability, I wanted to meet the criteria described above. But I had the added design criteria of making the finished product ‘Playable’. In defining ‘Playable’ it was important to minimize any tendency of the die to cause damage to the player or surface and for the die to roll properly on any given surface.

The primary concern was the sharp edges and corners of the previously offered Precision Metal Dice which were modeled after casino-styled dice and could only be easily rolled on a dice table, craps table, rubber mat, or short carpet. The new design called for a chamfer along all edges and corners. The next concern was the overall size and weight of the dice. A die that weighs heavily in the hand is not going to be ‘Playable’ for long, also when rolling several dice at once heavy dice may not be the optimal choice. To address these concerns, I opted to design the die in two size formats, ½ inch and 5/8 inch.

Manufacturing accuracy and repeatability is not one hundred percent and the variations on the milling equipment combined with the tooling I am being offered can vary as much as +/- 0.001 inches. The pip drilling is accomplished with a bit that does not actually bore a flat-bottomed cylinder. The tool is concave at the tip, resulting in a very slight conical rise of material in the center of the pip. (incidentally, the specified total amount of material removed by drilling these pips is less than 0.1% of the total material of the cube by weight)

Matching the Center of Mass to the geometric center point of the die cube was accomplished utilizing Solidworks Mass Properties feature which allowed me to select and modify the die geometry until could achieve that balance. This modeling assumed perfect materials, perfect geometrical dimensions and cylindrical pip cuts. None of these ideal conditions exist in the real world; but I can come close to accommodating them within the accuracy and repeatability issues mentioned above.

Because of the smaller sizes from the Precision Metal Dice, the variation off of the Center of Mass is also smaller. For the two die sizes I determined the Center of Mass to be:

½ inch die: rx=0.0004, ry=0.0005, rz=0.0001

5/8 inch die: rx=0.0004, ry=0.0006, rz=0.0001

Dice fairness test results

In mathematics the term “fair dice” is used to mean that there is an equal probability of the die landing on any one of the 6 faces when rolled on a flat surface. Shapes which are isohedral are “fair”. That means, all faces are the same (congruent) and lie within the same symmetry orbit (transitive). Each face must have the same relationship with all the other faces and have the same relationship with the center of gravity. Because my dice are metal, the machine shop has to remove a minute amount of metal to designate the pip location, but the diameter and depth of the pips are adjusted, depending on the pip count per side, to compensate for the material loss, and thus maintain the delicate balance of the die centroid equilibrium.

My precision gaming die is a cubical block of metal with pips machined into each of the 6 faces so that it can be used as gaming hardware. A toss of the dice is after all primarily intended to generate a random number, but in an extended exercise, one would ultimately expect a cubical die to produce a roughly (statistically) equal number of each of the 6 die faces. Some have inquired, as to the “fair dice” status of these Precisions gaming Dice. I attempted here to respond to the query by conducting a simple statistical exercise to assess the cumulative impact of the variables that affect the performance of all dice. My Precision Gaming Die was randomly rolled 1000 times and final resting positions carefully documented, and then statistically tabulated.

Chi-square analysis, in this case specifically a test for goodness-of-fit, was used to assess the strength of the relationship between the actual performance of my Precision Gaming Dice and the target of theoretical perfection for Casino Die. The chi-sqaure analysis of my results (1000 rolls) is summarized below.

An acceptable band of operation for a Casino Die lies between .55 (minimum acceptable) and 1.0 (perfection – i.e. each face occurs 166.6 times in 1000 rolls), as charted here. The chi-square value for my Precision Gaming Die was .84. Obviously, no die achieves perfect performance. The reasons are numerous; speeds of the die, spin, angle of release, distance dropped, edge radiusing, rebound impact, material composition, gambling surface, and so many others. The machine shop I am using (CRL) has made extensive effort to select only the top grade raw material, they meticulously control manufacturing operations to limit variation, and thus assure release of premium quality “Rix Dice”. Some level of variation is inherent in both the manufacturing process and the human delivery of the dice to the playing or game surface. SO you can buy with confidence knowing these dice are designed and built with ultimate performance and quality in mind.

I am very confident in this project, I have tested and re-tested and believe most of the problems are conquered.

Set backs may always occur, sure. Because these are precision, getting them right will be tricky, but the machine shop I have/will commission is top notch in quality, as I have already seen in my test batch.

Once funded, the only foreseeable issue will be packing and shipping. But I have access to good help and I am determined to get these out.
