Help make learning about science more exciting and relevant to students by making SNK easier to use in the classroom.

Our New Stretch Goal

If we meet our goal of $5,000 we will be able to finish categorizing our archived stories this summer and be able to work with teachers to make our “News in the Classroom” page current in time for back to school in September. If we surpass that goal, and are able to reach $7,500 we will also work this summer to redo the For Kids section of our site to be a richer, fuller experience with new content, similar to our new For Educator's page. If we hit $10,000 we also be able to redo the For Parents section with new content to help parents with their student scientists.

Your support also ensures SNK content is available free of charge to anyone, helping to make a more scientifically literate world.

Our Goal

We are seeking $5,000 in support to make our award-winning science content for students and teachers more accessible. Your tax-deductible contribution will help children—and their educators—from around the world learn about science.

About Science News for Kids

Science News for Kids (SNK) is an award-winning online publication that presents news on the latest scientific research for kids aged 9 to 14. Published as part of the Science News family of publications by the nonprofit Society for Science & the Public, SNK takes its readers to the boundaries of human knowledge and introduces them to the people who are working to expand those horizons. SNK reaches millions of people a year in dozens of countries, and many teachers use it in the classroom to help their students recognize that science is not just facts in a textbook, but a way of learning and thinking about the world.

We had a new record busiest day last month when more than 97,000 people visited the SNK site and overall traffic has grown more than 50% year over year due to new content and features.

The Project

With a goal to make our content more accessible and relevant, last summer, we met with teachers who told us what they really need is a way to connect the latest science news to the curricula they use in the classroom. So we hired science teachers to help categorize a sampling of our stories by academic unit, to make them more usable and accessible for teachers, students and parents around the world. Now users can find a listing of stories by biology, chemistry, physics and even subtopics such as cells and immunology. All together, SNK now has more than 75 categories that teachers, students and parents can use to relate the latest research with the specific scientific areas students are studying.

When our initial pilot project ended it was met with great enthusiasm by our readers and has been a big hit in the education community.

Your Impact

But we need your help today to finish the effort.

If we meet our goal of $5,000 we will be able to finish categorizing our archived stories this summer and be able to work with teachers to make our “News in the Classroom” page current in time for back to school in September. SNK is a key component of Society for Science & the Public. The Society is a nonprofit that has been in existence since 1921.We have delivered real impact in that time towards our mission to promote the understanding and appreciation of science and the vital role it plays in human advancement. Related to this specific project, we have already successfully completed a pilot effort that has been enthusiastically received.
