About this project
As animal lovers, we always struggled to keep our pack weight down while backpacking with our dogs. We couldn't stomach spending $100+ for a lightweight dog bed, especially when they really weren't that lightweight to behind with. We've yet to see any dog bags or beds that offered a 1"+ insulation loft, that could also fit into a small stuff sack, and weigh less than 2lbs. Frustrated with the lack of lightweight dog sleeping gear, we came up with the idea to offer durable, ultralight dog beds and sleeping bags, with the goal of keeping the weight to an absolutely minimum.
Our goals:
- Offer affordable dog sleeping bags and beds
- Fabrics must be durable, lightweight, fast drying, and comfortable
- Insulation must be able to withstand the elements, especially moisture
- All bags/beds will include a drying hang loop
- Will stuff into a small stuff sack
- Machine washable
- Insulation loft of 1.25"
- Weight will be kept to a minimum - under 1 lb
Our vision is to create the perfect combination of a lightweight, warm, durable dog sleeping bag or bed. Our focus is on keeping our customers happy... your dog of course! All of this wrapped into one package will create a dog bag/bed that will last, and keep your pack weight down.
Risks and challenges
Potential risks with our project, and how we mean to address them:
1) Insulation separating from fabric.
--- We've thought this through! Not only will the insulation be sewn to the top and bottom fabric's perimeter, it will be sewn through the body to eliminate any shifting of insulation.
2) Ripped fabric: dog nails, rocks, trees, etc.
--- We have an extensive knowledge of fabric durability and elasticity. We've certainly taken into account the types of things that our dog beds and bags will be subjected to, but worry not... we've selected the highest quality ripstop material to completely remove any doubts you have about durability.
3) Insulation being hindered by weather, especially moisture.
--- We thought long and hard about this one. We wanted something that would compress well, and maintain it's ultralight priority, but we decided against down due to it's weakness being moisture. We think you'll agree that your dogs health is much more important than saving a few ounces off his or her sleeping bag. So when Rover decides to jump in the lake and comes out freezing, rest assured that his dog bed will be providing the much needed warmth to get him back on track.
