An ABC picture book offering a fresh, new world of possibilities for children today
(Please check the 'Updates' link above the video for additional artwork samples from the book and new reward offerings)
About a year and a half ago, I received a text message from my sister-in-law that included a picture of my niece Avery. In the picture, Avery had a pacifier in her mouth and was posed in the traditional 'baby squat' position that I love.
In response to the picture, I created a quick graphic rendition of the image using Adobe Illustrator. During the illustration process, a slight mistake transformed the initial 'baby squat' into a pose resembling a basketball player dribbling between the legs. Shortly after this realization, I created another illustration of my niece as a basketball player. Following that, I decided to create an illustration of Avery as a disc jockey. Then, the idea for an updated ABC career picture book developed into an obsessive series of illustrations. After all of the characters were illustrated, I wanted to create unique settings that would allow me to incorporate my backgrounds as a traditional and graphic artist . Here are a few samples of the finished product (minus text).
The next logical step for this project was deciding on a name for the character. After long consideration, I decided on the name 'Little Boo'. Little Boo, the nickname given to Avery, seemed to be a perfect fit for the character due to the endearing quality and innocence it personified. The name also gives the character more universal appeal and broader reach than a specific person's name.
Education and graphic illustration are both deep passions of mine. With countless hours spent on this book, I want to give children of all ages a well-illustrated picture book that exposes them to many non-traditional career options. It is my hope that children are able to imagine freely and have their immense dreams nurtured as they flip through this book. I am a firm believer in doing what I am passionate about and enjoy, and I think this belief is often ignored or overshadowed by many external factors in various cultures and society. Although Little Boo is the main character, the possibilities and voice of this book can be realized by all children, including your own little boo or two. Although things will never be perfect, opportunities amongst genders and ethnicities are improving each day.
Through Kickstarter, I hope to obtain the funds to self-publish 1,500 hardcover (8.5" X 8.5") copies of Little Boo: What Will You Do?, purchase an ISBN, create and ship all of the rewards for this proposal, and cover all of the distribution costs of this book.
At this moment, I have 100% of the illustrations completed for this project (A to Z) and am currently adding text to each page. I have already received quotes from all of my vendors along with shipping timelines. All I need now is your support, generosity, and word-of-mouth to help these illustrations come to life on bookshelves all over the world.
Thank you for taking the time to review my proposal, and I hope you enjoy my book as much as I enjoyed producing it.
Risks and challenges
Self-publishing comes with many inherent risks such as order forecasting, production, and shipping delays. To keep the costs down, I will be using a printing company with a 2.5 month lead time, and the possibility of delays could arise. In addition to obstacles from vendors, possible setbacks on my behalf may include filling a large quantity (a good problem to have) of rewards once my project is funded, facing rejection from publishers, and extended time needed to create custom books for backers in the $500 + level.
Whatever the obstacle, rest assure that I will keep you up to date along every step of the way and will do everything in my power to remedy the situation!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
