Monster Deck 55
It is a card deck system. A system can be used to play many different games, like poker cards. I will be revealing and designing games that can be played with this particular deck. You can play a lot of your classic favorites like poker, go fish, rummy, memory, and many more. They will change because of the specifications of this deck but will still be fun.
This is not a kid's game. - But you can play kid's games with it.
I have been a graphic designer and artist for over 22 years and teacher for over 10. When I made this deck I wanted to make something similar to a standard poker deck but with lots of other features. I wanted something very fun and suitable for all ages. My main purpose is to design many fun games that can be played with one deck. My secondary purpose is to design cards that can also can be used as a teaching device. You can teach about colors, numbers, body parts, food, language, and spelling. I will make games that are educational based and games that are more about strategy and fun.
- COLORS - There are 18 beautiful colors.
- SUITS - Arrows, Airplanes and Triangles.
- NUMBERS - There are 3 of each number, 1-18 and one wild,
- MONSTERS - There are 55 unique monsters.
- FOOD - Each monster is named after a food in 9 groups.
- CHINESE - Chinese and Pinyin translation for the food.
I am designing a collection of original and adapted games to be played with this deck. I will be introducing new games during the course of the campaign. Each Game will represent a monster. The original games are games I developed based on the specifications of the cards. For the adapted games I took a classic game and applied it using these cards.
2-8 players • 20 min • 8up A game where tossing cards count. If you are accurate, you can earn points by landing your monster on top of another monster that you call out first. Each monster you steal earns you a point. If you have 2 of the same color it's double, all 3 is triple for each monster.
2-5 players• 30 min • 8up The goal is to get the most food in the most of the 9 categories. There are 6 food items in each category, so if you have 4, you win that category, but you could win it with less. Each player starts with 5 cards, The rest of the cards are placed in a face down grid on the table. The first player flips 3 cards, one gets discarded, 2 go into the player's hand. Then the player selects any one card to put back on the board. This continues till there are 2 or less cards on the board. At the end, whoever has the most in a category gets 2 points, if it's a tie, each player gets 1 point. The player with the most points wins.
2-6 players • 20 min • 8up This game totally tests your immediate memory skills. All the cards get put face down in a pool in the center of the table. Each player draws 5 cards. The first player reads his 5 monster names, this takes turns going around the table. Once everyone reads their five cards the person on the left of the starter will tell the starter his 5 cards. If he is correct they go back in the pool, If he gets any wrong, he keeps them. This goes around till everyone guesses. Then the next round the cards drawn go up to 6 and so on. Whoever has the least amount of cards at the end wins.
2-6 players • 20 min • 5up Play a completely different version of the classic game, go fish. Be the first player to get 3 sets of a single color. You need to ask one player if they have a certain color, but there is a light and dark of each color and you can't specify that.. All the draw cards are face up on the table and if anyone has to pass a card, it has to be shown to all players.
This is the first draft print run from the print company. I need to check colors and details. This shows things are close to production. Still minor changes to make but I'm anxious to get this thing printed. Box details coming soon.
Printing and shipping costs have been calculating. I am giving the backer the best possible deal.

I am a very sweet guy. I feel this is a situation I need to prove myself, so I am not holding back. I am available for any questions you might have. People need to trust me and I hope they do. I have a Taiwanese wife and 2 kids. I have been in Taiwan for over 12 years. I do go back to Syracuse, NY when I can. I wish it was more and I think it will be with my career in game design. Lots of game conventions to go to in the states. I will be bringing Monster 55 to Essen, Germany in October. I am excited.
When did this MONSTER 55 project start?
About 3 years ago I decided to make a quick series of monster paintings. I found some bright colored plastic board at a store down the road and I bought them out. I drew the monsters freehand with a black oil based paint marker, then filled them in with a white acrylic house paint and used the paint marker for the outline overlay one more time. I was going to paint the monsters with bright colors, I even called it stage one after I photographed them. I really love simple art, so I decided to keep them as is. The image below shows all the original paintings on their original background color.
Risks and challenges
As a graphic designer for over 22 years I have overseen and created over 300 print jobs (name cards, posters, flyers, stickers, bookmarks, etc). I have chosen a printing company, I already placed the order and paid a deposit. The cards are designed and almost ready to go. I will make a few minor changes. The box is a standard box, unless I upgrade and that should be no problem.
The only real challenge I see is shipping. I will make sure that is handled properly. It depends on the amount of backers, 50 is different than 1000 obviously. I am aware of shipping houses incase I need the help. I left plenty of time in case I do run into an issue with shipping.
This will be the first of many kickstarters to come and I hope to earn your trust by delivering what I promise. Thank You.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
