The Story of You, if funded, will become a 32-page hardcover picture book with a dust jacket. The story is the journey, through a parents retelling to their child, of a child’s first steps into our beautiful Orthodox Christian faith. It walks the reader through praying for them before they were born, the prayers on their first day, special naming prayers on their eighth day, their entrance into the church on their fortieth day, choosing their godparents, the steps of their chrismation and baptism, and then beyond as a member of the body of Christ.
My name is Presvytera Angela Alatzakis, and I am a former preschool and kindergarten teacher and the author and illustrator of the children’s picture book Every Time I Do My Cross. In October of 2012, I started a publishing company called The Orthodox Children’s Press, to create Orthodox Children’s books and goods. I am married to the wonderful Fr. Thomas and for now we have two furry children, a cat and a dog. We are serving at the beautiful parish of The Assumption in East Moline, Illinois and live in a 1920's house near the Mississippi river.
The story came to be in the midst of a very difficult but beautiful time in our lives. I had been working on another book for a really long time, and something just wasn’t working. Simultaneously we had been given some pretty devastating news, that after years of waiting and wondering, we were told in a fairly hopeless manner that we might never have children. Fr. Thomas’ response was, “they didn’t know we were Orthodox Christians”. From that point on we have been on a roller coaster of a journey, having faith and hope through miracles and loss. Please keep us in your prayers.
During one of the lowest points in this experience I was sitting alone in silence and prayerful thought, and the story came. I began writing, and have been working on it ever since. The story and pencil illustrations are complete, as is about 75% of the artwork. I will need about a month or so to finish the paintings. From there it will be edited and put together, then sent to the printer. I am projecting and praying that the books and the rewards will be to you by February 2018.
Why I need your help
Creating, producing, and printing a book is very expensive and I cannot do it on my own; or honestly I would. The money raised will go toward printing this book, rewards, kickstarter fees, shipping and shipping supplies. If any money is raised beyond the goal, it will go to print a larger print run or strictly for the printing of further books created or reprints.
