WHAT IS IT?
Life With AIDS is a multimedia journalism project that aims to connect with viewers on a personal level and share HIV/AIDS stories to inspire activism. It will be a collection of short documentary journalism stories covering many levels of activism and personal stories of those living with HIV/AIDS. The stories will be housed on a web site along with a collection of information about the subject and and an on-going blog.
I first met Dab Garner at the Miami AIDS Walk on April 3, 2011. He was a vibrant, enthusiastic and outwardly healthy man who drew a crowd as soon as he started speaking. That's when I learned that Dab was one of the first men in the United States to be diagnosed with HIV in 1982 when it was still called GRID. His entire life is now devoted to educating people about AIDS and helping those who are infected. As I got to know Dab, I learned about the struggles that people living with HIV/AIDS face every day and also learned that those struggles often go unnoticed.
I decided pretty quickly after getting to know Dab and meeting others who are effected by HIV/AIDS that I wanted to carry this story further than a single story about Dab's life–that I wanted to try to give a voice to others who hadn’t had the opportunity to tell their stories and show the amazing work that they are doing through activism and awareness. Through this project I hope to share through personal experiences what Dab and many others have taught me: That the fight against HIV/AIDS in the United States isn't over yet.
I will be working on this project primarily from Miami where I am based. To get the stories, I'll travel to the subject and spend about a week in their town doing interviews and documenting their life with HIV/AIDS. Right now, I have stories in the making in Boston, Miami, Baton Rouge, LA, and rural Arkansas. The project web site and blog will be updated frequently with news about my progress and about HIV/AIDS. Your donation will help me with traveling expenses (airfare, car rentals, lodging, etc.) and getting the web site up and running. The final completion date for the Life with AIDS project is December 2011. Your contribution to the project will contribute to its success and to the spread of HIV/AIDS awareness and education. Thank you so much for helping.
