Thank you for your support and making Half-Genie Hero happen! We did it!
The Kickstarter is over but the fun continues at www.wayforward.com!
Every copy of the game gets FREE DLC!
Over the last 23 years WayForward has developed more than 200 licensed titles, our most recent being Ducktales: Remastered. When circumstances permit, we also make weird and wonderful original games like Shantae and the Mighty Series.
In all that time, fan letters, support emails and interviewers have made our most frequently asked question, “Why don't you guys make more original games?”
Kickstarter allows us to do just that! With your help we can create a large-scale multi-console game that's well beyond our usual self-publishing budgets.
Best of all, we have our ducks in a row. Half-Genie Hero is already approved for development on Wii U, PS3, PS4, VITA & VITA TV, Xbox 360, Xbox One and Steam (Windows PC). Now it's time to start making the game.... all we need is your support!
Who is Shantae? Why, she's the star of our game! She’s a human/genie hybrid (a Half-Genie) who hair-whips monsters with her ponytail, and belly dances to transform into magical creatures. She explores Sequin Land, solves labyrinths, trashes epic bosses, and foils the busty buccaneer Risky Boots, always managing to save the day! She's been featured in three daring adventures, all designed exclusively for Nintendo handhelds. Now Shantae's headed for the living room, but her core gameplay elements will remain intact:
-Whipping! Destroy monsters, topple bosses, and solve puzzles with your hair
-Belly Dancing! Dance to transform into a variety of creature forms
-Platforming! Run and jump through deviously designed levels
-Exploring! Navigate a world of interconnected levels and Labyrinths
-Customizing! Earn new abilities, unlock stat-boosting artifacts, magic & costumes
-Storytelling! Flirtatious characters and wonderfully off-beat humor
Shantae: Half-Genie Hero continues the tradition of action/adventure in the spirit of Metroid, Castlevania, and the Legend of Zelda. Our goal is to introduce Shantae to a whole new audience with a fresh art style and a brand spanking new storyline. As always, we're putting pitch perfect controls in the front seat.
In our story, Shantae is roused from a deep sleep, suddenly alert. She plunges into the moonlit forest in search of answers. In nearby Scuttle Town she discovers a mysterious trapdoor, and beyond that, a luminous subterranean cavern. A familiar voice calls out, drawing Shantae to a beautiful fountain. Touching its waters she is immediately spirited away to the fabled Genie Realm. At her feet a magical seal swells as some powerful evil seeks escape. The chamber trembles with a deep, bellowing roar and everything goes white. Shantae sits upright, back in her bed. Was it just a dream? Or a vision of things to come?
As the player it's your job to find the source of this new evil power and banish it once and for all. The story is doled out in CHAPTERS, with each chapter introducing new subplots, friends & foes, a new Transformation to discover, puzzles to solve, hazards to overcome, and a Boss to conquer. Revisiting past chapters with newly acquired abilities will unlock the next set of paths, powers & plot-lines.
Our funding price will allow us to create an action-packed opening stage (with boss), 3 Chapters, and an exciting conclusion; similar to previous Shantae games. But why stop there? Together we can make this game truly epic by reaching our STRETCH GOALS!
Matt Bozon: Director of Contra 4, Mighty Switch Force!, and the Shantae series is back in the director’s chair, making odd noises and leading the charge.
Jake Kaufman: Fund this pup for the soundtrack alone! He composed the previous Shantae OST's and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
WF Animation Team: Character animation and visual design provided by our battle-hardened feature film veterans... the same crack team that brought you a Boy and His Blob, Batman: the Brave and the Bold, and Ducktales: Remastered.
Inti Creates: The developer that brought you the Mega Man series is providing character concepts and illustrations!
Mariel Cartwright: the Lead Animator for the much acclaimed 2D fighter Skullgirls is also animating Shantae!
Gigi Digi: Best known for her work on Cucumber Quest! Gigi is the source of these beautifully stylized backgrounds.
WF 3D Team: From environments to VFX, our diverse 3D talent has amazing range. Who else can build both Duckburg and Silent Hill?
WF Engine Team: Our engine tech is world class. PC based, 1080p, and the silky smooth 60 frames-per-second our games demand.
WF STAFF: Last but certainly not least, our programmers, level designers, directors, department leads, writers, testers and producers (defenders of your funds and our deadlines) are all on board.
Stretch Goals are an important part of this project, because they will shape the game's content in a big way. Animated sequences, Extra Chapters, and Unlockable Costumes will add something special to the final product and make an already great game even greater! A few of our Stretch Goals will be revealed over the next 30 days, just to keep you on your toes and have some fun...!

Shantae began her journey in 1994 and saw her first game released in 2002. For over a decade Shantae games have won awards and acclaim the world over:
Shantae (Game Boy Color): Risky Boots transforms a simple steam-engine into a magical monstrosity! Can Shantae save Sequin Land from disaster? The game that started it all. Reviewers named Shantae the Game Boy’s swan song. It earned a perfect score from Nintendo Power and was deemed a “Best Nintendo Game of All Time” in their final issue. Distributed by Capcom in 2002, Shantae has become one of the rarest and most sought after collectables out there. It was recently re-released on the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console.
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge (DSiWare): Risky returns with a magic lamp capable of stealing Shantae's "genie half". Is this beginning of the end for Shantae and her friends? The sequel was a long time coming -- but was worth the wait, earning the highest Metacritic rating across all handhelds in 2010. The game was ported to iOS the following year. It was named Game of the Week by Apple and has since been featured numerous times as an "essential" platformer in the App Store.
Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse (coming soon to Nintendo 3DS eShop): When a curse falls upon Sequin Land, Risky Boots and Shantae must join forces to battle unimaginable evil. The third act in the pixel series, this highly anticipated game is nearing the end of development, and will be available for download this Winter.
