MEGA-SIZE Team Reveal: Mega Man developer Inti Creates! WHAAAAAT?!

W-A-R-N-I-N-G-! Tie down your inner fanboy… We’re pleased to announce that Mega Man developer Inti Creates is working on Shantae: Half-Genie Hero! If you’re not familiar with Inti Creates, they’re the studio behind Mega Man 9 & 10, the Mega Man Zero Series on Game Boy Advance, and Mega Man ZX and ZX Advent....and now Mighty No. 9!

In September of 2011, mysterious Shantae fan art appeared in the gallery of Inti Creates employee Makoto Yabe (aka KOU). At KOU’s suggestion, Matt Bozon reached out to Inti Creates President and CEO Takuya Aizu to see if his studio would like to collaborate on Shantae. By the end of the year, Inti Creates was hired-on for Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse, and has since continued on with Shantae: Half-Genie Hero.

Inti Creates has developed key artwork, concepts, and character illustrations for the Shantae series; many of which you’ve already seen both here, and in our 3DS PAX demo. We are thrilled to finally reveal them as official members of the Half-Genie Hero team.

To celebrate, you'll see “Shantae & Beck” high-fiving over at the Mighty No. 9 Kickstarter page (illustration by Inti Creates & Comcept). And you’ll see a similar image on this page (at the top) by WayForward’s animation team. Amusingly, we did not collaborate on these images – yet much like our Kickstarter dates, they’re surprisingly similar! Seriously, compare them… its uncanny.

At this time we’d like to extend a very heart-felt thank you to Keiji Inafune and his team for their support! Mr. Inafune has been an inspiration to us for many years, and we’re extremely excited to see his project come to fruition. You can thank them as well by visiting Mighty No. 9’s Kickstarter page and making a pledge.

That artwork looks amazing guys, thanks for sharing.

    3. Creator Steffen Simonet on September 18, 2013

Wow, I absolutly love the artworks from KOU. I even think, Shantae looks better (and hotter) that way. The green chick and the zombie-dude are also fantastic! Cool thing, that you are working with them. Maybe you should really consider to give the main charaters (Shantae, Risky..) an alternate Inticrates-Skin! That would be uber-awesome.

I admit, I never played a Shantae game before, but I think now is a good time to download and play them one by one on my 3DS. :)

    4. Creator Lorenz Jugel on September 18, 2013

      Awesome stuff.

I would love to see a sneaky cameo to appear in both games. I guess a true cross-promo is out of the question due to the cost and workload that would cause, but just a short nod to "the other game" would be amazing.

Confession time: I like the slightly more adult Shantae and her expressions in the artwork above better than the "cute" Shantae in this game. Then again, the younger style is perfectly serviceable, so whatever.

    5. Creator Robin Andersson on September 18, 2013

      Wow, that's pretty cool!

    6. Creator Rakuraiji on September 18, 2013

Already put my pledge in :3 really hope the game makes it!

    7. Creator Jose Zeledon on September 18, 2013

      yesssssssssssssssssssssss

    8. Creator Matthew Roche on September 18, 2013

      This is incredible news!

    9. Creator "Rick" on September 17, 2013

@Dan Murphy: I believe they are only working on the art side of things, meaning only concept artwork. That excludes sprite designs, animations, programming, etc.

    10. Creator Dan Murphy on September 17, 2013

      Im really confused/concerned.

Wha at Wayforward is actually working on this game? It seems like everything is being outsourced except sound.

Am I giving my money to Wayforward to make a game or am I giving my money to wayforward so they can pay someone else to make the game while they make 'Adventure Time: Hey Ice King I Dont Know 3'

    11. Creator Garrett Graham on September 17, 2013

I absolutely love Inti Creates and KOU's artwork shown here, it's full of character and drawn amazingly well. I kind of wish it was 1/2 Genie Hero's main art-style, but the current one is still good.

    12. Creator Rayner Alves on September 17, 2013

I know it might be strange for me to point this out of all the characters but I love Bolo's new design. I know the point was for him to have this sort of plain look, but he definitely has a much more interesting look this way.

    13. Creator Enrico Bianco on September 17, 2013

Will Inti Creates art be featured in the hard cover art book? I'm considering upping my pledge. ;)

    14. Creator Stephen Townsend on September 17, 2013

This is awesome news, I thought that the artwork for the 3DS game was particularly gorgeous. This news needs to be spread around a lot so I hope people do what they can to do so. I want to see this on a bunch of gaming news websites, Inti Creates are a fantastic team that often does a lot of great work that people aren't aware of.

I hope the Mighty No. 9 team do what they can to get the news out too!

    15. Creator Ryllharu on September 17, 2013

Okay, you've convinced me that I *need* the digital art book. Upped my pledge.

    16. Creator Holden on September 17, 2013

The world could use more news like this....

      @lizard81288 Could be very cool

    17. Creator Ian Ford on September 17, 2013

So cool glad to be supporting both and great art KOU. Wow great games coming.

    18. Creator lizard81288 on September 17, 2013

I wouldn't mind a crossover game. Infusing the Mighty Numbers with magic would be a pretty cool story.

    19. Creator Smittynator on September 17, 2013

O_O ... I want to kiss you guys ... the whole team ... both teams in fact ... Will we see a Shantae Guest appearance in Mighty No.9 ... or vice versa...? ... ...
NAARRFFFF!!! HERE, TAAAAAKE MY MONEEEYYYYY!!! *Rise Pledge +50%*

    20. Creator Tekaramity on September 17, 2013

And this project just keeps improving in amazingness~ Inti's been one of my favorite developers for a while, dating back to Mega Man Zero, and these images definitely confirm that Mr. Yabe & company can branch out beyond the Reploid realm rather smashingly. Rotty's looking stellar. owo Really, everyone is, from Shantae on down. =) So glad to see collaboration between WayForward, Inti, and Comcept! Between Dust, Shantae 4, Mighty No. 9, and Shovel Knight, just to name a few, the 2D action genre's kickin' it and /then/ some!

    21. Creator Ryan Sinclair on September 17, 2013

Oh my CHICKEN FLAPPIES! This is crazy awesome. Talk about mind blowing? I think my heart just exploded with a heart attack of love for WayForward and IntiCreates!

I wish I could actually give a hug to both Keiji Inafuna and Makoto Yabi! It would be crazy awesome if Beck makes a cameo in Shantae Half Genie Hero and vice versa. I suspect that a freaking cool Megaman X Shantae crossover is on the way. Hopefully, this also means that Mighty No. 9 will actually be on the PS Vita although I didn't see it in the stretch goals.

    22. Creator Matt & Joey on September 17, 2013

Wow! I'm really excited about Inti Creates involvement! The artwork all looks wonderful! Mighty No. 9 is what brought me to Kickstarter, so I'm excited to see them supporting Shantae!

    23. Creator Dorian Moody Cromartie on September 17, 2013

      @andreas
Those portraits are for the upcoming3DS game. HGH will likely have different portraits.

    24. Creator Phil E. on September 17, 2013

      oh.....wow.....the art...........

    25. Creator Paul Walker on September 17, 2013

I would love to see shantae / beck cross overs in one or both games. Some easter eggs would be amazing!

    26. Creator Makotwo on September 17, 2013

Shantae ,Sky ,Rotty and even Bolo look great. Nice artwork indeed.
Also nice to see Sky getting some love.

    27. Creator Thomas Boehnlein on September 17, 2013

I really hope WayForward reaches the first stretch goal. Maybe this will give them the push they need. I want my Risky Boots!

    28. Creator Robert Case on September 17, 2013

All the characters look sweet here, and I'm gonna have to hold on to that pick of Rotty Tops brother. I tried to draw him one time but couldn't find a good ref

    29. Creator AndreasG on September 17, 2013

@Matt: Sky looks great, but for me Rotty steals the spotlight. (Thanks to her I can use the words "cute" and "zombie" in one sentence.) I like how expressive the different poses are. (That bashful Shantae!) Did I understand correctly that these are supposed to be used for the portraits during conversations? I'm sure that would add more emotions to the dialogues than the best voice acting ever could.

    30. Creator WhattheFnu on September 17, 2013

Damn, that's some good art. I love studying pics like this; figuring out why one color ends and another begins where it does. Understanding why lines are given the shape they are. I also like her half-jacket. It's a neat little extension of her normal design.

    31. Creator gb7zone7 on September 17, 2013

@Matt I agree, I'm really liking her design in this one.

    32. Creator Thomas Custer on September 17, 2013

This is Amaaaaaaazing! I'm so glad I decided to back them both even before this. This is just icing on the cake!

    33. Creator Enrico Bianco on September 17, 2013

This is enough to make an old-school gamer like myself cry tears of happiness.

    34. Creator Yan Zhao on September 17, 2013

A cross-over better happen down the line somewhere!

    35. Creator ULTIMATE-Taco on September 17, 2013

bolo looks like a legit rpg character just without all the drama. DARE I SAY A NEW "cid"?

    36. Creator WayForward on September 17, 2013

(Matt) I really like how SKY is developing as a character. She's looking really good here, eh?

    37. Creator Andrew Bailey Gill on September 17, 2013

YES YES YES YES YESSS!!!! This should give the kickstarter just the boost it needs!

    38. Creator AndreasG on September 17, 2013

@GuNMouTH: Nice crossover! They really should consider adding her as a guest character in MN9.

    39. Creator Jake Pangares on September 17, 2013

TIE DOWN MY INNER FANBOY!?!? NOOOO! THAT'S IMPOSSIBLEEEE IM LITERALLY FUH-REAKING OUT! THE HIGH FI- AND THE PICTU- ARTWO- OOOMGGGGGGGGGG

      Crossover with Mighty No. 9?

      OH HELL YEAH

    41. Creator AndreasG on September 17, 2013

Wow, that's just awesome. I really love the artwork, it's perfect eye candy for the bishoujo otaku in me xD
Now I hope we can meet that 700K stretch goal, so I can ogle Shantae in all the alternate costumes.

    42. Creator Stephen Roesch on September 17, 2013

Makes me wonder what the Japanese think about Shantae.. I don't believe any of the games have been localized for Japan?

    43. Creator Brett Schwartz on September 17, 2013

      Awesome art!

    44. Creator Omar Lima on September 17, 2013

This art style should be a stretch goal as a character skins.

    45. Creator Razor Volare on September 17, 2013

      CROSSOVER PLEASE!!??

    46. Creator Ethan Molloy on September 17, 2013

    47. Creator Nicholas Pinelli on September 17, 2013

I think the term for what happens now is "That's all she wrote."
