Update #4

Shantae character design update!

TWO UPDATES in ONE DAY!?  Work on Shantae's character design is continuing at a brisk pace.  We're presently trying out some new color palettes for the main sprite.  Our engine uses a nifty "additive lighting" effect, which can make her look cool & luminous by night, or warm & vibrant by day.  This is still a work-in-progress... check it out!

I was a little concerned by her paleness on the front page, but seeing this has convinced me. I'm in for the digital artbook for now, but I've got an eye on the physical one! Hmm.

Seriously? Just making her white is good? How is that original, there are so many fully white heros in the gaming world. The tan is Shantae's trade mark, it's her gimmick, it's what makes Shantae, a cool, original character, she's had it since the Gameboy color. Why do you want her to be like everyone else? I don't see how that drastic change could be good or fun to play as. And no man, Shantae only had 2 other games, Classic Sonic had a whole stock of Games, people were so used to him, that's why they complained. This is the 4th game in and I don't want her to be full white like everyone else.

I feel like I'm the only person that likes the palette they created. Look at the colors for the concept art for Shantae 3DS. Look at how much nicer it is on the eyes. They designed her like that. This is a great example of people not being able to live with change.
Complaining about this is the equivalent to Sonic fans complaining about green eyes.

I would see no problem with her having very dark skin like you posted. The reason people had a problem with the white skin is because she wasn't white in Risky's Revenge.
I don't think it was/is unreasonable for fans to want the same character as featured in the previous hit release.

I was going to back this Kickstarter anyway, but I am glad this was adjusted, I love how she looks in the 3DS game and this is closer to that, I think that's a happy medium. I understand you need to make her distinct on the backgrounds, but her being so much lighter than Sky and Bolo just felt unusual! I love her sprite and how she looks in both these clips, it's extremely cute.

That's better. Looking at it side-by-side with the WayForward profile pic, I can tell the difference, and I appreciate it. As drastic as the difference is in the night setting, though, who knows? Maybe the background was just playing tricks on my eyes before.

Anyways, with that behind us, I like the effect and I noticed some of this happening in the trailer, too. How do you get that effect, though? Are her sprites just their flat, 2D images in-engine, or are you attaching them to an invisible 3D base in the 3D environment? If so, is it the natural lighting that's doing that? Or are you going out of your way to specifically affect the sprites themselves in certain ways? I know I'm asking you to give up your secrets, but I can't offer feedback on an engine if I don't understand how it works.

I think the color schemes in both work. But that black collar and black part in pants looks a little odd in a still image.

    19. Alicia02.small

Creator Briand Christophe on September 7, 2013

      Why sprites two different colors?
Why not put some sort of layer of light.
Gender, the layer starts with a 0% opacity, and when you go into the dark area the layer devien less transparent (80% opacity) to become dark.

    20. Fb_profile_picture.small

Creator Kevin Behrendt (Raging Herald) on September 7, 2013

Good to see Shantae darker (could be a little bit more nevertheless). Skin color may be a minor thing in general but not so minor when it is about changing an attribute, which already exists. So it is great so see good ol' Shntae.

@WayForward That's the kind of thing I like to read :D people keep complaining about a lot of things and asking for changes without thinking about all the time you guys spent studying Shantae's design. I think she looks perfect this way. Now she has everything it takes to be an iconic game character and I believe her popularity will grow considerably after this game is released.

Certainly reminds me of the day to night transitions that were employed in the GBC original, and those were effective if not simply palette changes with smooth transitions!

      @WayForward

That are some interesting design choices. To exaggerate the features of a character to make it easier to distinguish from a distance is a really good idea in general, proven by countless of games other than Shantae. Plus the contrasting color scheme make her stand out even more, especially during the day stages. Gold, Red and Purple is a excellent color palette that makes the character herself stand out no matter where she is and how her skin color. However, it's not so contrasting during dark stages, where the Purple and Red mix into the background quite well even tho they are slightly lighter. Her lighter skin tone actually helped her a lot in the dark stages, as shown in the trailer. She stood out no matter where she was. So the light skin tone was a positive design from a game design perspective.
However, due to how a lot of people see the skin tone as a problem from a character design perspective and a inconsistency in the games, lets have something else help her stand out when the light changes. I would suggest the Gold to stand out a bit more during night. Her accessory, especially her head piece, is a continuing feature in almost all of her transformation designs and so would be great for helping her during dark stages. By making it slightly shimmer or be less effected by the color change during dark stages would give her dark design have a sort-of new color scheme, by making the Gold the contrasting color to the new dark Purple and Red. The Gold will also be very easy to track as it stands out from the background as well, making the character in general stand out from the background with no problems and the player will have no problems what so ever to keep track no matter how many times the light changes and no matter how complex the stage design is.

That is pretty much my 5 cent on the matter. By the way, please continue talking about character design in future updates! I'm very interested about it. :D

Creator MJTH on September 7, 2013

That is much better. Like others have already said, whilst Shantae's design has been inconsistent over the years, the skin tone used in the previous images for the new game was a bit too drastic a change. That in no way meant that the sprite was bad, but it was a step too far from the previous designs and look less recognisable as shantae.

    26. Merman2_baksmall.small

Creator Sarah Jesness on September 7, 2013

Oy, I like this new skin tone compared to the trailer. I get that her skin tone was never consistent but I think the trailer version really overdid it on the lightness. Didn't look like Shantae anymore, it would be like if Nintendo released a Mario game where the title character had tan skin and blonde hair. Anyway, glad you're changing it. <3

Creator WayForward on September 7, 2013

Hi everyone! Thank you for the very positive feedback on this color scheme. The notes about the costume are also fun to read. Some trivia for you...

The night time colors are meant to be like the underwater or nighttime scenes in shows like 1980's GI Joe and Transformers, or like the night time scenes in many Animated Disney Classics (like Aladdin) .

Regarding some other design elements, these were arrived at by drawing the character large, looking something like the pixel sprite. Then it was shrunk down until it was tiny on screen and edited at a micro-sized view. Body parts where exaggerated until you could clearly see her eyes, face, navel, and hip-tilt direction even at a great distance from camera. Then it was enlarged again, and cleaned up. This is the reason for the bowling pin shaped body, the very tall eyes, the long torso, and black triangular pants. She was designed for maximum contrast and readability on screen no matter how far we pull back the camera. This way we could have her battle a boss that's truly colossal, or solve a puzzle that requires an extremely zoomed out view (think Harmony of Despair).

Considering the fact that she lives in a tropical setting, this skin tone fits so much better (not to mention that all the other characters had a darker skin color). And to be perfectly honest, she looks a lot more lively now than before, she looked so pale.

Agreed. I don't really like sexualized design that much, but it does fit the theme and character, so it's not something I think should be changed. She's definitely not OtherM-Samus or anything and sometimes it probably DOES fit a character, like here.

@Jared Thornton et al nagging about the pants. It's basically a bikini bottom. These are a style of harem pants designed as a belly dancing costume rather than for casual wear like the GB design wore; the DS design is wearing a similar version where the legs are sheer. These types of harem pants are designed to draw attention to and accent the hip movements, which are core to the performance. If you've played Etrian Odyssey 4, you can see that the Dancer, male or female, is wearing also wearing harem pants designed for such performances; Female Dancer happens to wear the same style as Shantae in this design. All things considered, it's a completely sensible design choice when they have shown they want to highlight the belly dancing angle to the character and presentation more.

I haven't played Ducktales Remastered yet, so I don't know (I'm assuming this is a modified version of that engine, since it's got the same "2D high-res sprites over 3D assets for backgrounds" going on)
