Update of EVIL!

Greetings and smellutations, Backers!

You asked for it, and oh yeah, you’re going to GET it. Nasty villainous DLC, that is! We’ve got some updates for you, so pardon our candor – it’s what happens when you work side by side with Risky Boots and her horrible hench-monsters the Tinkerbats for any length of time! This is a hefty update because we’ve been up to NO GOOD in our studio of skullduggery! First, it’s time to take a peek at the upcoming Risky Boots DLC, a huge add-on that is a literal game-changer. Next, we have an update on BACKER REWARDS, including the Tinkerbat Dance, Blue Shantae, and Classic Risky. So be sure to read the entire update – Risky Boots commands it!

You ARRR a Pirate!

Back in 200X, you all funded a stretch goal that enabled us to create an entirely new campaign for the bodacious buccaneer, Risky Boots! Today we’d like to give you a preview of what you’ll be getting when this exciting new campaign launches THIS SUMMER:

A Brand New Adventure!

In this brand new storyline, you’ll play the role of Risky Boots as she travels to the four corners of Sequin Land in search of components needed to deliver destruction on poor Sequin Land. Risky Boots DLC is filled with new puzzles, new enemies, and a new End Boss…. (Any guesses who it might be?).

The Captain’s Cabin!

Risky’s base of operations is her ship’s cabin. From the comfort of her luxurious bathtub, Risky can order around her crewmen and decide where they should travel to next. Players will be able to sail to any of the “Shantae Mode” levels in any order - but the content found within those levels will be radically different this time around! More on that in a moment. For now, enjoy this Captain’s Cabin concept art!

New Moves and Cursed Magic!

If you played Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse, you’ll be happy to know that Risky Boots DLC brings back the “Pirate Gear” style of play. Risky will unlock new equipment as she progresses, which includes the Cannon (for multi-jumping), the Pirate Hat (for gliding) and some new gear like the Grappling Hook! If you liked Pirate’s Curse, you’ll feel right at home in this mode!

New Enemies!

Yar, matey – thar be monsters! Yes, Risky Boots will be facing new enemies, too! We’re bringing back some fan-favorites, and we’ll touch on two of them today:

Wetman is back, and he’s gonna defend his watery turf with claws of snipping! A sizable foe that can block attacks and attack with terrifying swiftness!

Batgal returns! Another of our favorite Game Boy combatants is back to whip players into a tizzy! She’s ready to bring the pain, but Risky Boots is no pushover, so Batgal better keep on her toes!

Cristina Vee in the Booth!

Did you know that Cristina Vee is the voice of both Shantae AND Risky Boots? Yep, it’s true! Cristina came by Mint Potion recording studios recently to voice Risky, and she slayed us all with another killer performance! Risky has a lot of witty one-liners, and Cristina had us swabbing the deck with tears of laughter. We can’t wait for you to hear it!

Setting Sail this Summer!

The new Risky Boots campaign will arrive this summer, and as always Backers will be getting this DLC at no cost. We’ll have more information on Risky’s Mode in our next update!

Exclusive Backer Reward: Tinkerbat Dance DLC:

We’ve finished development of the Tinkerbat Transformation Dance! With this new addition, Shantae will be able to haggle with someone (or something) during her adventure to unlock this new Transformation Dance. As a Tinkerbat, Shantae can slash using a speedy scimitar, and glide by deploying a Tinker-Copter! The Tinkerbat Dance will work with Shantae Mode, Hero Mode, and Hard Core Mode.

This content was created exclusively for “Tinkerbat Tier” Backers ($55 and above), and will not be made available to the general public. The Tinkerbat DLC is being submitted to all gaming platforms for approval, and should be ready to roll soon! We’ll update you the moment codes start to arrive!

ALSO: Please remember that with all DLC, you will receive the code (or codes) for the platform(s) that you previously selected. WayForward has to actually purchase these DLC codes in advance, and for this reason we are unable to freely swap codes between platforms. Thanks for understanding.

Reward Update!

We’re also putting the finishing touches on Blue Shantae and Classic Risky, and will soon begin work on the Drifter Blade attack!

The Collector’s Coin and Lenticular Poster is also under way, and we’re almost done lining up manufacturers for our Music CD, Shirt, and Art Book.

Of course, the playable Sky, Bolo, Rottytops are also in development, along with the Costume Modes! We’ve been busy!

Excitement Abounds!

We’re as excited as ever about these new Shantae: Half-Genie Hero modes and Backer Rewards! It’s going to be a fun summer, and believe it or not, there are still surprises in store! See you next update, Backers!

Awesome! I'm looking forward to the new modes and the Tinkerbat transformation. I can't help but wonder now if you guys have a nice surprise in store for the blue costume. I'm excited to play hard-core mode with it!

      Keep up the good work!

Hi! The above are great news and I'm excited! Well done and keep up the good work! Any news on possible Switch Ultimate version?
P.S. (Pretty) please try to not mess with the region DLC codes again!

Yessss I'm so excited! Pirate's Curse blew me out of the water with how fun its gameplay was, so I'm VERY excited to see a mode that returns to that! Besides, we all know Risky is best girl, so I'm REALLY looking forward to playing as her!

Some of you sound so whiny and impatient. While its true we have yet to get the rewards it think Wayforward has run a far better Kickstarter than most others. They prioritized the game over rewards and have deliver a great game with cool DLC coming. I've backed a few other Kickstarters around the same time that have not only not delivered but also given few if any updates on their status. Games like Reven, Paradise Lost , Heart Forth Alicia, and Omori. Don't even get me started on Mighty No. 9, i never received anything from them. At least Wayforward has given lots of updates and free copy of Shantae Risky's revenge Director's cut on IOS. Some Kickstaters i'm actually shocked when i get stuff now, like oh yeah i backed this.

I think Risky Boots needs a rubber ducky

I'm really not a fan of Tinkerbat not being available to everyone, and I'm one of the backers who'll get access to it. If HGH comes out on Switch, I'd upgrade to that so I could play it anywhere, but that would mean I can't get all the content. :/

      This all seriously looks awesome!
Gameplay, enemies, and is that a new Risky portrait I see of her?
I don't know why I laughed at the bathtub too. Maybe it's because of Pirate's Curse and Risky trapping Shantae by... tub.

Hopefully, I'll get this DLC when it's out.

Love it! Cant wait! Great news! Looking forward to ALL this!

Sounds awesome! I loved, LOVED the design from Pirate's Curse - reminded me of Quackshot's progression, and Quackshot is one of my favorite classic games of all time - so I'm thrilled to hear of this new campaign coming and the returning "Pirate Gear Style" :) I'll definitely be popping the game back in this Summer - for sure - to check out Risky Boots' campaign. I've got a heckuva backlog (way too many awesome RPGs out this year), but I'll make time for some more Shantae. Its not like you guys'll demand my attention for weeks and weeks and months and months *glares at stack of PS4 RPGs I need to finish*

      Awesome update, Wayforward!

I will take a good guess and say that when all DLC is finished, you will port the game to Switch with all of it.

I was an Xbox 360 backer that opted to move my support to PlayStation 4. When the game released, I received download codes for Steam and had to go through some steps to get my PlayStation 4 codes. Is there a way to ensure that this won't happen with the Risky Boots and Tinkerbacker DLC codes?

While I really enjoyed HGH despite it being a different experience than the previous games, the upcoming DLC looks promising so I'm looking forward to diving back in. The only thing that I will critique negatively is the backer physical rewards. I can understand that it takes time and effort to finish a game, but I would have figured the rewards would've been worked on by a separate team to be released in time for the launch of the game. I have friends who backed Yooka Laylee who got their physical rewards within a week or so of the game's release. Not to sound ungrateful or anything, but it's approaching 4 years and we're just now hearing that manufacturing hasn't even started. Love you guys, but come on...

    16. SorachiJirachi on May 5

Will those who ordered the European Wii U version that got complimentary Steam codes get the Tinkerbat DLC for the Steam version too?

    17. Peck Boozer on May 5

Will the DLC be cross platform on PSN? I backed for PS4 but have it on Vita as well & would like to not miss out on my content if I play my Vita.

    18. Ryan Palacios on May 5

I am really annoyed with how long this took and the fact it's still not done also are the other quest stretch goals going to be done at some point because the game is super short I done everything there is. And is the tinkerbat a place holder model because if not it's super lazy every dance makes a creature that has shantae features this is just a normal tinkerbat it should look like shantae as a tinkerbat.

I must say that after 3 1/2 years, it is extremely disappointing that you haven't even begun to manufacture our rewards....the book, tshirts and CD specifically. You must know that a lot of us will never back another game that you do. Waiting so long for the game was one thing, but it seems to me that you have sucked as much money as you can out of all of this, while giving back very little. Such a shame! Yet, I've already backed another project and been super suprised at well they have managed everything. I thought this with you was typical, but it turns out it's not. Just want my rewards and I'm out!
