Greetings and Salutations, Backers!

We're back! The weeks leading up to E3 were incredibly busy, and it’s been a maelstrom of activity over here ever since. Let’s dive into this update and fill you in on the many details surrounding the project!

Temmie from Undertale!

Please welcome to the Shanate dev team, Temmie! You probably already know Temmie from her indie smash hit UNDERTALE. Now she’s lending Shantae her expertise to help bring our massive animation load to a speedy conclusion. Look at the rad animations she's created for our Backer Enemy Slimegal! Thanks for the helping hand, Temmie!

Target Release Date!

The end is nigh! We’ve set a target release date of 9/27/2016. That includes PC, Wii U, PS4, Vita, and Xbox One. Our goal is to launch in all territories and on all platforms at the same time, which we really hope can line up just right in order to get the game in the hands of all backers at the same time, with the full release right afterwards.

As for the term “target date” – yes, that can shift and is not guaranteed to be the street date. Once we submit the game, we might have to make corrections and resubmit. It could (hypothetically), pass Nintendo of America but have a translation error with Nintendo of Europe. So the date might shift around as we come closer to launch, but that would be purely out of necessity. So mark your calendars, but use a pencil until the date is finalized and locked in.

Xseed brings Physical Copies to the US!

Our friends at Xseed will be publishing Half-Genie Hero at US retail stores! Dubbed the “Risky Beats” edition, this version will come packaged with music from the game. It’s coming to Wii U, PS4, and Vita (pre-orders are live now, so tell your friends!). WayForward is still the primary publisher, so you’ll get Backer Rewards from us as previously planned, and Backer Exclusives are still just as exclusive as ever. In case you have questions, we’ve assembled the following FAQ for you. With this physical release now, Half-Genie Hero can reach even more players than before!

Boxed Copies - Questions and Answers:

Since E3, we’ve received a barrage of letters from folks interested in Xseed’s physical versions. We’ve replied one-one-one via social media and support, but here are answers to the most popular questions as a quick reference:

Q: Can I change my platform preference to a physical copy?

A: We can’t offer that option, because WayForward will not have the ability to distribute physical copies. However, we expect that Backer DLC will be compatible regardless of whether you bought a physical copy or downloaded the game (Example: If you have PS4 digital with Backer DLC, the PS4 disc version would have the same features unlocked). We don’t want Backers locked away from the content they’ve backed.

Q: Will the Physical Game's Soundtrack be the same as the soundtrack backers will be receiving?

A: No. Although many of the songs will be the same, the Backer CD includes backer-exclusive bonus music. Both discs are expected to look somewhat different as well.

Q: Will there be a separate music CD you can purchase for SHGH?

A: Presently there are no plans for a separate music CD.

Q: Will there be physical EU copies? Is it only in the US? Does this effect the EU release date for digital copies?

A: We have not announced a publisher for EU yet! This does not affect the target release date for EU digital. We hope to release all versions at the same time if at all possible.

Q: Is Game Stop the only place you will be able to pre-order the game? Can they be pre-ordered at EB Games in Canada? Can they be pre-ordered on Amazon?

A: No, this is not exclusive to GameStop, and you can find the pre-order on Amazon. More pre-orders should appear at various retailers during the following months.

Q:Will there be an Xbox One physical release?

A: Currently we do not have any announcements regarding Xbox One retail.

Q: Will there be another Early Access Build for backers before the game is released in September?

A: We aren't planning another update for Early Access, as we're busy preparing the final version.

Q: Will there be a Steam pre-order option?

A: Possibly. We are looking into this.

If you have a question that’s not answered here, please check out our Shantae Half Genie Hero FAQ and Support page.

Until Next Time...

We’re working our brains out as we push to the end -- Wish us luck!

Hi! But what about DRM-Free version and Linux?

    2. Peter Meldgaard on August 4

      Great stuff, and welcome Temmeh!

Now you guys need to make sure she gets to animate some fiercely bulging pecks and abs!

    3. Daniel Schibuk on July 25, 2016

      @Zynk:
Since there will be both physical release of the Vita and PS4 versions I suspect that it will not be cross-buy. Also if that is the case then it would really suck for non-PSN members as it will be the second game that I know of, the first being Mighty No. 9, where PSN backers get three copies and everybody else who backed gets only one. Also with the delay for PS3/360 versions this would be another kick in the rear towards 360 backers.

    4. Zynk on July 23, 2016

OMG 2 months to go! GameFAQs has a release date at September 27, 2016 for ALL platforms! INCLUDING for PLAYSTATION 3!! I hope the game would be cross-buy!!

    5. Cyber Shantak on July 16, 2016

Will keys be sent to backers before release date? Will the game be available for pre-loading?

    6. Cohen on July 16, 2016

Q: Will the PSN version be Cross-Buy or at least Cross-Play?

    7. david borengasser on July 15, 2016

I think I'm going to get a physical copy, even though I already have a digital one. I have a lot of faith that you guys are working on another cult classic and I want a piece of that history.

    8. Gregory Schneider on July 15, 2016

Looks amazing! Cant wait to get it!

Friendly Critique: That idle animation seems a bit jerky, almost like it's missing some frames, or the speed is uneven in a way that doesn't seem natural (even for a slime girl). But welcome aboard, Temmie! It's crazy how big Undertale is. I might play it myself one day.

I'm looking forward to release! The E3 trailer was one of my favorite E3 reveals this year; the quality is top-notch! I just hope you guys aren't in a deep crunch or anything. Keep pushing, but stay healthy, too! I don't mind waiting a bit longer.

And congrats on the deal with XSEED! It caught my attention during the last trailer, because I'm secretly a big fan of Senran Kagura, which I believe they and Marvelous brought over to the US.

You said it my fellow country man... Er... Gal... XD
But if everything else is in order, I don't think that would be impossible feat.
I do whole wholeheartedly support Wayforward but unfortunately they indeed are quite notorious for delays. But if they have everything else like stage design and enemy behaviors in shape 'n order, they could just and just make it.
Naturally, I'd like to stay optimistic over the situation and wish they'll make it in time for the first big release but animations do take long time to finish and I've yet to meet a person who can do whole 15 or so frame animation with in 1 hour. Even for a sprite artist, that is an difficult task. I should know, I sprite. Takes me a whole day of non-stop working to achieve such a feat.
I don't want to draw any devils on walls but there is a big chance we're asking for the impossible here and there will be a delay. Unfortunately.

@Olli: I'm sure every major game has to deal with some last minute work. The stuff we've seen has looked complete, and if it's just clearing off some animations, then that's fine. QA should be something they're doing all throughout anyway.

I'm really happy that Temmie's on board, but she didn't make Undertale. Toby Fox made Undertale. Temmie did a lot of the art for it, but she didn't make it. It might be best if you correct that.

Yeah, that line made me worried, too. I'd been under the impression that the final months of the development cycle are devoted to quality assurance over asset creation.

    19. Olli Johannes Suvinen on July 14, 2016

Still work in progress on animations part and release date is just two months away?
Oh boy, I have a nasty feeling we won't be as lucky as to meet the first target release date.
But I do cross my fingers and hope for the best.

    20. Thomas (RadioShadow) on July 14, 2016

I hope there is going to be a physical EU Wii U version. Can't wait to play this game!

    21. Liam Reddington on July 14, 2016

I've not heard mention of the physical rewards for a long time, did they already get sent out as I've not seen anything?

    22. Ami Mizuno on July 14, 2016

Can we get some info on physical rewards like the coin/shirts/etc?

    23. WayForward Creator on July 14, 2016

      @Chris Young

We're sorry about the wording. We didn't mean it to imply she made Undertale, more that people would know her from her animations in Undertale.

    24. Josef Blom on July 14, 2016

"the Backer CD includes backer-exclusive bonus music."

THANK YOU! There's another Kickstarter game that came with a soundtrack, and it was missing tracks from the official release. Glad to hear our support is being rewarded here.

To be more specific, Toby Fox did the writing and development for Undertale - he's the creator - and Temmie as the main artistic assistant provided most of the sprites and concept art for Undertale. I'd say it's their game.

    27. Winson Poh on July 14, 2016

I've purchased extra copies of the game but in different platforms.

But you know what? WayForward have been doing such good jobs that I will buy the physical copies too to support them!

SHANTAE RET-2-GO!!!?? Looking forward to it! September was the same month this games kickstarter fund started so I find it highly poetic should we get our release date almost 3 years to the day since it was funded! Here's hoping everything goes smoothly across all systems and there is little red tape needed to cut through with the different console manufactures and branches around the world! Been really looking forward to this game, loved everything ive seen and played thus far too! Lets go! Full steam ahead!

    30. Jason Lauritzen on July 14, 2016

Disappointing there wasn't an actual beta. If it was always intended to be that demo, that was quite the paltry offering. Anyways, looking forward to this.

    31. Daniel Schibuk on July 14, 2016

      Love the animation.

    32. InquisitiveRavenclaw on July 14, 2016

HOI! That's some nifty animation right there.

    33. AJ Ferolie on July 14, 2016

Ok, my SLimegirl is looking great in animation! Very excited to see everything she can do, as well as the rest of the game!

    34. Weakwall on July 14, 2016

Now that's quality art and news! Very great!

    35. Daniel Schibuk on July 14, 2016

No word on the 360/PS3 releases.

    36. Gary Stewart on July 14, 2016

YAY! My hype is through the roof! This is totally the 3 year wait.

    37. Cheesus on July 14, 2016

That Slimegal is way too cute! You can't keep doing this to me, I'll die from adorablitis.
