About this project
What is Stuff4Hire?
Have you ever needed to use a tool or an appliance for a one-time project and wished that you could rent it for a few bucks instead of having to buy it? Do you have a house full of things that you do not use often and would like to rent? Stuff4Hire is a online platform that will bring together people who need things with people who have things to rent. Using Stuff4Hire you will be able to browse for products in your area and negotiate rental terms with the lender. Also, you will be able to post items on Stuff4Hire and earn money for your little-used household products.
Help get this project off the ground.
Your participation will help pay for the development and launch of this community. We have an amazing team at the ready to build this project, and funds raised will be used for everything needed to get our business and the site up and moving–including software, web hosting and design.
How Does it Work?
The whole thing is pretty simple. Stuff4Hire will handle all of the rental details on your behalf. When someone wants to rent your item, Stuff4Hire will send you a Rental Request Notification. This notification will provide details about the renter including the desired dates and the renter’s prior rental history. If you decide you want to rent your item to that person, Stuff4Hire will hold a deposit to cover the value of the item. When the renter returns the item, the deposit will be returned to the renter minus the cost of the rental. If the renter does not return your item or if the item is damaged, Stuff4Hire will reimburse you for the value of the item.
What types of items can I list?
The site will be designed to facilitate the rental of reasonably small items such as tools, furniture, appliances and electronics, but can range to clothing, accessories, kitchenware, you name it. Stuff4Hire will not allow members to list items such as homes, apartments or cars.
How do I know who I can trust?Stuff4Hire is a community. Each time someone rents an item, he will be able to rate his experience and provide a review. If someone gets consistently bad reviews or low ratings then it will be a signal to others to stay away from that person. People with consistently low ratings over time will not be eligible to participate in Stuff4Hire.
What if I have an issue?
If there is a rental issue, it will be mediated by Stuff4Hire. Lenders and renters will be able to submit claims and Stuff4Hire will proactively work to resolve the problem. If a renter receives a defective item, Stuff4Hire will help her find a suitable replacement. If a lender’s item gets damaged or stolen, Stuff4Hire will reimburse her for the value of the item.
How Did Stuff4Hire get Started?
About 4 years ago, I moved into a house in upstate New York. Each time it rained, water would come streaming down the side of the house and flood my basement. I needed a ladder in order to unclog my gutters. But I didn't own a ladder, andand I was new to the neighborhood, I had no idea who to ask. So, I went to the Home Depot and spent $150 on a shiny, new multi-position ladder. I cleaned my gutters, and then found a spot for my new ladder in the garage–where it stayed for over 3 years.
Today, the internet connects people. We share our ideas and experiences but, despite that, our society tends to live in silos. Many of us have things that we will use once or twice a year. How many times have you used the luggage beneath your bed? How many parties have you given with the set of folding chairs that you bought on sale at Walmart that you just could not pass up? Stuff4Hire will allow you to make use of these things, reach out to your neighbors and connect with them in new ways. It will bring a dimension to social networking that is often lacking now - human interaction. I care about Stuff4Hire because it encourages neighbors to speak to each other again, and and because I want to help the environment by lowering consumption. Most of all, I love Stuff4Hire because it allows me to use the one thing I have loved for a very long time - technology - in a positive way.
What will it look like?
What are the Rewards?
While you've been reading this proposal, a few recurring themes may have jumped out at you: community, sharing, and communication. We chose these rewards to reflect those themes. Supporting Stuff4Hire means you are helping to build something that will impact your community in a positive way. The swag is our way of saying thanks for helping us build communities:
$5+ We will send you a Thank You card with a reminder of our launch date. You'll also get access to our Spotify Playlist shaped by Stuff4HIre community members.
$10+ We will send you a S4H pen. I know, we all use our cell phones, but giving out your phone number is way more fun when you write it down on a napkin.
$25+ We will send you a bag of Stuff4Hire espresso. When your new friends you've met on S4H come over to your house, you'll have something to offer.
$50+ We will send you a S4H tool kit, to help with small tasks around the house. Donors at this level will also be invited to use Stuff4HIre when it soft-launches in June.
$75+ We will send you a S4H Baggu, promoting reuse and showing the world that you are a part of something that helps our environment. Donors at this level will also be invited to use Stuff4Hire when it soft-launches in June.
$100+ We will send you a S4H hoodie, just because it's cool. Donors at this level will also be invited to use Stuff4HIre when it soft-launches in June

What People are Saying About Us:
Risks and challenges
The Big Picture
Stuff4Hire is here to help you rent your household items to your neighbors, and promote the sharing economy. By facilitating product rentals amongst individuals, we’re helping create less stuff in the world–and build stronger communities.
The Demand …
Once Stuff4Hire is released, I believe that it will be adopted fairly quickly. Most people who have seen the proposal relate to the concept and have an easy time picturing themselves posting items to the site and renting items from it. We all have things in our homes that we urgently needed the day that we bought them that are now gathering dust in a corner.
The community will supply both the inventory of items that the site will list and the customers who will rent them. Stuff4Hire will guarantee the safety of the items by keeping a deposit at the time of rental and it will protect users by only allowing good citizens to participate in the community.
We are developing a User Interface experience that will make it easy for people to quickly enter items for rental and set prices. Renters will be able to search for items in several ways including category (cameras, furniture, etc), model (Nikon, Canon, Ikea) and price range. Users will be able to communicate with each other in order to negotiate a price and date/time of rental through Stuff4Hire. Stuff4Hire will protect each user’s identity and location until the last possible moment.
We are building features that will allow users to get support for items that are not working properly. Users will be able to submit claims for lost or damaged items.
Our actual goal is to raise at least $45,000. The additional money would allow us to get a mobile app built and launched at the same time as the website. The $15,000 that we are raising now will allow us to get Stuff4Hire soft-launched in June, 2015. In order to do so we need to hire a front-end developer and we need to set up our production server infrastructure. The money will also help us continue to market the website until it launches. Any amount that you contribute will help us reach our goal of building a product that will impact every community in this country in a positive way.
You can help by backing us, or you can help us by sharing our page with people that you know. Thank you in advance for your consideration and for your generosity.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
