Brian McClellan brings you epic fantasy action based on his wildly successful Powder Mage series!
This tabletop role-playing game will immerse players in a world of muskets, intrigue, sorcery, and revolution set against the backdrop of an industrializing fantasy world that is fully realized through three (soon to be four) full novels, multiple novellas and now, this role-playing game/world-book!
The book will contain world information about The Nine, and the lands beyond, sorcery and more, while having rules for playing your very own Powder Mage, Magebreaker, Privileged, Knacked and all the wonderful characters you can imagine!
There will be rules, new canon information, art of popular characters in the series, and pregenerated adventures and more!
The book is projected to be around 180 pages.
Brian hired Alan Bahr and Gallant Knight Games to consult and help build this roleplaying game. At first, Alan and the team worked to create a new system, much like they have for other games they've developed. However, after a year of playtesting and building, they couldn't land the flavor right. Alan built a Savage Worlds ruleset for a one-off, to see how it'd work for a stretch goal, but lo and behold, it quickly became the most popular ruleset of choice among the playtesters!
Savage World's focus on fast, furious, fun, really aligns with Brian's writing and storytelling, and the ruleset was a natural fit! So we became an official Savage Worlds licensee!

We're doing something a little unusual here. There are no stretch goals and nothing defined. We've looked into options, and we certainly have some ideas of what we're going to be doing, but we have no hard and fast stretch goals. Instead, every dollar over our funding goal we raise will be going to improving the book with things like
- More art
- More adventures
- More pages dedicated to the world of Powder Mage
- Possible accessories to the game (alternate decks of cards, GM screens, and more, are items the team has looked into).
We want to make the best game possible, and instead of shackling ourselves to a particular goal or target, we want to be able to put our money into the game how the game needs it!

The one exception will be the Whole Powder Barrel, which may be as much as $15 for US and $60 for international.
Risks and challenges
Q: Can Brian and team handle this project?
While this is Brian's first Kickstarter, this will be Alan's 3rd as a project manager. His first one delivered the digital rewards over 5 months early, and the physical rewards over 3! His second one is on schedule as well. In all honesty, this is a more complicated project with lots nuances, but we're prepared to handle them. That's why Brian hired Alan and the GKG team!
Q: What if the text isn't finished?
A: The draft text of all the rules is 100% done and will be made available as soon as Brian and the team determine it's ready. Brian has already already started on the world text and the rest of the book.
Q: What if the complexity of the project overwhelms the team?
A: We have straight forward pledge levels to make it easy to manage. In order to keep the project manageable for our small team, we've worked hard to remove all the variables that we'd normally worry about.
Q: What about delays in art?
A: We've already began to contract out the art, and some of the art is already here. Isn't it great? We're really happy with our artists. If there's a delay on the art, we have back-up artists we've already done test runs and are ready to work with.
Q: Increase in shipping costs?
A: Shipping costs constantly rise, and while we've projected them to the best of our abilities, there's not a lot we can do if they change. However, by using BackerKit we can charge shipping at the time when we're ready to ship in order to do our best to be accurate and as easy on our backers as possible. IMPORTANT: Shipping will be charged after the Kickstarter through BackerKit
Q: What if something happens to the principals?
A: If something were to happen to Brian, or another writer on the project, we've identified our backups, and our team is spread all over the world. It'd take a really big asteroid, zombie apocalypse or alien invasion to wipe us all out. The files and plans have been communicated to the whole team, and a new project lead (who has been identified) will step up.
