About this project

This Spring, Spudnik embarked on an epic mission to expand the boundaries of community printmaking! Through unveiling our "Space Race", we hope to spark unprecedented support for community arts and democratic printmaking. We recently moved into a larger space but cannot utilize our equipment with out completing a major press refurbishing project.

We are creating a campaign to bring to life 3 letterpresses & an offset press. Once we complete this project, we can share our movable type and photo polymer plate equipment with Chicago artists. We will also provide unprecedented opportunities for Chicago artists to use offset printing to create self-published zines, newsletters, comics, chapbooks, and other printed ephemera.

Our kickstarter campaign will culminate in a permanent series of community letterpress classes and affordable use of our presses through our Open Studio program.

MORE INFORMATION

We will be adding the following equipment to our facilities:

AB Dick 360 Offset Press: Prints up to 11x17. Ideal for high volume self-publishing. Lino-O-Scribe Proofing Press: Ideal for high volume relief printing, including linoleum blocks, woodblocks, and letterpress. The Pilot Platen Press: 6"x9" chase. Ideal for small to medium runs of invitations, cards, and other printed ephemera The Pearl Platen Press: 7"x10" chase. Power-driven press. Ideal for experienced printers creating high volumes of letterpress art Nu-Arc Plate Maker: Exposes photographic plates that can be used for letterpress printing, as well as offset, lithography, and etching.

We are raising funds to cover the following costs:

Electrical Work: Improving electrical supply that powers our presses. Replacing aged unsafe wiring on the presses. New Rollers: Our Pearl press is missing the rollers. Other presses need the rubber on the cores replaced. Initial Supplies: Before offering classes, we need to acquire addition fonts of type, a few more composing sticks, and bases for polymer plates. Not to mention ink. Press Repair: We will be working with an experienced offset printer to fix up our AB Dick press. He is donating his time, but we will need a budget to cover the cost of materials. General Studio Improvements: There are a few larger items that we are in desperate need of, such as a drying rack for all of our presses to share, a case for our letterpress furniture, and cabinets. We are looking for all used equipment.
