Annoucing: The Fourth Stretch Goal ($30K)
We've a little less than six days left in the Kickstarter campaign and we've just passed our Third Stretch Goal. The short additional story by Heather Bruton will be included in the final volume!
For our Fourth Stretch Goal we wanted something fun that would add something tangible to wrap up the funding campaign and thank everyone who stepped up to be a part of it. So, if we reach $30K by the end of the week we will add Vinyl Stickers to every level that includes something being mailed ($35 and up).
We're working on three other designs (for a total of four), but for one of them (Update: Another below) we wanted to use a variation of the pin design with a bit brighter colors (we may change this a bit in the final version -- just an example):
These will be highly weather-resistant quality vinyl stickers, suitable for your chariot or litter. (A Nordguard sticker from the same company lasted on the company van for four Minnesota winters.) We'll update with other designs as soon as we get them, but you know they will be awesome.
Also see below for the final Bowling Shirt design from Keovi -- and a special announcement about making the Bowling Shirts AND a tee shirt version of her design available as an add-on.
Announcing: The Third Stretch Goal ($25K)
We're in the home stretch now and rolling right into our third stretch goal. Because things have been going so well and we hit funding so early, Heather Bruton found the time to do A Second Extra Story!
It's a short four page modern tale of an American tourist who takes a photo he shouldn't, and gets a lesson from our jackal pal he won't soon (and probably doesn't WANT to) forget.
We're only 9 days away from the end of the Kickstarter now, so all of you folks who have been waiting "until later" to hop on board, do it now! Nine out of ten pretend Egyptologists agree: Backing this project probably won't hurt your chances of a favorable weighing, should you for some reason end up in front of the big guy.
Announcing: The Second Stretch Goal ($23K)
Thanks to everyone who helped us reach the first stretch goal. The new comic will be completed and included for everyone to enjoy now.
Many of the artists (and some of the writers) have things to say about their comics, the characters, the settings, or the neat things they found out when doing background research for some of them. We thought it would be fun to have an Annotations / Commentary section!
Some will have a lot to say and some will have less to say, but we will work to pull out as much information as they have to give and add it to the final book. We can't estimate number of pages at this point beyond "several", but the peek into the creative process will be pretty cool.
Announcing: The First Stretch Goal ($20K)
Since we are getting pretty close to our funding level we figured it would be a good time to announce our first stretch goal: An Additional Never-Before-Seen Color Comic/Story by Dark Natasha and colored by Heather Bruton.
This adds 12 pages to the mix. Well worth spreading the word to help make the final book even more awesome (and to find out what we have planned for the NEXT stretch goal).
In 2002 indie adult comics publisher Sin Factory (an imprint of Radio Comics) produced the first volume of an adult comic anthology featuring the Egyptian God Anubis. Called Anubis: Dark Desire and featuring the art of Heather Bruton, Dark Natasha, Sara Miles, and Diana Harlan Stein, it was wildly popular and the initial sales rush at its first convention was something Sofawolf noticed and dreamed of emulating one day. The series went on to encompass a total of four volumes, adding the talents of Terrie Smith and Michele Light to the original slate of artists, and concluded in 2008. Many of the early volumes have been out of print for many years, and have become nearly impossible to find.
Sofawolf Press is happy to announce an anthology collecting nearly the entire run of comics from the original volumes (19 stories, over 165 pages) along with some of the original single-page art and a gorgeous new cover collaboration by Dark Natasha and Blotch. The stories range from comic to dramatic in style, feature a variety of sexual orientations, and are fine examples of the indie adult comics genre of the period as drawn by many of the finest pioneer artists of the fandom.
While most of the original material (apart from the covers) was drawn and printed in black and white, everyone agreed that the anthology really needed to be in color. It is for that reason that we are launching this, our second Kickstarter campaign.
The goal of this Kickstarter is to fund the coloring, offset printing, and delivery to the backers of the anthology Anubis: Dark Desire. Along the way we'll have some exciting stretch goals that will add material and otherwise improve the final book. We expect the final page count to be in the 180 - 200 range, maybe more!
The book will be offset printed and perfect bound on sturdy paper, coated for protection. The cover on the softcover edition will be heavyweight cardstock printed one side with a satin laminate. The hardcover edition will be smyth-sewn with endpapers and a printed casebound cover with a satin laminate. These will be quality printed editions designed to last, and of similar quality to our other titles.
All money raised from this campaign will fund the printing of the book, production of goodies for the reward levels, packing and shipping of all of the above to the backers, and payment of the fees to Kickstarter and Amazon. The artists are paid royalties from all the book "sales" through the campaign, as well as direct payments for sketches they do as part of the sketch levels.
Color offset print runs for books of this size are a significant investment for small presses. Your support is what makes it possible!
NOTE: This is a collection for adults only. Please ensure that you are legally authorized to participate, and receive the book, in the country in which you reside.
We've already talked about the book, what else is there? Well consider the following:
Downloadable Image - Something to show our appreciation to everyone who takes part, whether they can afford a copy of the book or not. We are not yet sure what it will be or who will do the art for it, but it will be unique, tasteful, and Anubis-ey.
Cloisonne Pin - This will be a LARGE pin, 2" across, and will have the usual round pin-back butterfly clasp. Just the thing for dressing up your fanciest duds before a night out on the desert. Kickstarter exclusive! These will only be available to backers.
Shot Glass - Standard clear 1.75 oz tapered shot glass, dressed up with a metallic gold rim. The design will be satin etched into the glass for permanence. Kickstarter exclusive! These will only be available to backers.
Tee Shirt - Design will be screen printed onto Hanes (or equivalent) all-cotton unisex-sized tee shirts. We will provide a sizing chart and allow you to select your size when we collect your information at the end of the campaign.
An early rough layout of the tee shirt design is below. The design is being done by Mitti and features a cereal-mascot-inspired Anubis design.
NEW! Here is the final colored tee shirt design!
Bowling League Shirt - Shirts will be vintage-style button-down bowling league shirts similar to this. They will be available in Men's Unisex sizes from M to 3XL (we are looking for a place to get Smalls, but they seem hard to come by). Sizing information will be provided in the backer survey.
The team name "The Dead Abides" and logo design will be applied to the back and a name of your choice will be embroidered on the front upper left chest. (Obviously space is limited, so names will need to be kept reasonably short.)
Below is a VERY rough rendition of the team logo design, showing Anubis decked out in his "The Dude" finery and bowling the unconventional way. The art is being done by Keovi and will come out looking super awesome.
UPDATE! The final version of the Bowling Shirt logo from Keovi. The gold will not just be gold colored, but will be done with metallic gold ink for a subtle extra bit of pizzazz. This will be as durable as any other screenprinting paint and will last just as long with proper care.
Because this came out so awesome and because so many people asked, we are making this available as two Add-Ons:
Bowling League Shirt [$75]: This will be just like the shirts at the upper pledge levels EXCEPT for the embroidery option. These will just be screen-printed on the back with the awesome logo above.
Keovi Tee Shirt [$20]: Slightly pricier due to the metallic inks, these will be printed on the same heavyweight black tagless shirts that the Mitti design will be printed on, in unisex sizes S - 3XL.
Sketches - Limited to a certain number per artist, as indicated on the levels. Once they sell out they are gone! Sketches will be black and white, pencil on Bristol board. Size will be approximately 9" x 12" and will be shipped un-matted and unframed.
Sketches will contain Anubis and ONE other Egyptian God or Goddess of bidder's choice. The bidder will also be able to specify settings, poses, and activities of the characters. The rest will be up to the artists' discretion.
Any of the levels from $35 on up (ie: that require physical shipping) can add or add extras (no more than 5 in total of any of these) of the following:
- Shot Glass = $8
- Cloisonne Pin = $6
- Tee Shirt = $15
- Softcover = $35
- Hardcover = $55
- Bowling Shirt (without embroidered name on the front -- just the shirt and the screenprinted Keovi design) = $75
- Keovi design on a Tee Shirt = $20
Simply add extra funds onto your pledge level and we'll gather all the information when we do the surveys at the end of the campaign.
Risks and challenges
Sofawolf Press has been in the publishing business for well over a decade and has plenty of experience in producing offset books of this type. This is our second Kickstarter, as well, so we have a bit of experience there, too.
In a project like this, time is always the biggest risk factor. Everyone involved is working hard to ensure we hit our require production dates, but once the book is in the hands of the printers we are somewhat at the mercy of their schedules and freight shipping limitations. We will always do our best to keep everyone informed, and have confidence that everything will come through in the end.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
