NEFILATEK : A 100 % recycled 3D printing filament

Nefilatek is a Montreal-based startup specialized in the manufacturing of 100% recycled 3D printing filament. 

   The company was created in September 2018 by two ambitious  in mechanical engineering students. The idea is to make high quality filaments from 100% recycled plastics to reduce the environmental impact of 3D printing.

   Here is a small comparison of environmental impacts between the production of 1 kg of new ABS and 1 kg of 100% recycled Nefila HIPS. 

We are significantly reducing  the environmental footprint of each spool by using less fossils ressources.

These values have been calculated with Open LCA and EcoInvent Database; transportation and packaging were not included in this comparison.

   A lot has already been invested in raw materials and machines. Launching NefilaTek on Kickstarter is for us a great way for us to introduce our filaments to a vibrant community. 

We need your help to bring new filaments to market  such as Nefila PC (Polycarbonate). 

In the future we plan to create  to create a community with our customers around a recyclable product which has a smaller impact on the planet. Thanks to your help we will be able to continue our research and produce innovative filaments.  

 Nefila HIPS Black 

   The first filament developed by Nefilatek is made with HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene) recycled from electronic waste. It allows impact and heat resistant 3D prints, while presenting the same characteristics as standard ABS.

HIPS can be dissolved and smoothed with D-limonenene or Terebenthine oil and can be used to print supports for specific 3D prints (made with other material like ABS).

                                       Our HIPS is ready to be commercialized !!


Printing parameters : Nefila HIPS 

  • Nozzle temperature : 230 – 260°C
  • Bed temperature:  90 – 110°C
  • Cooling Fan power : 0 – 50 %
  • Printing speed : 40-100 mm/s
  • Enclosure recommended 

 Nefila PC 

    Here is our second  already developed filament, it is made with PC (Polycarbonate). This material proposes outstanding mechanical properties (solidity and flexibility) and is resistant to wide temperature variations (-50C° to +130C°). Using a full metal hot end and adding brim supports allows you to print objects from polycarbonate with a standard 3D printer. Nefila PC is the perfect filament to print objects for technical applications

 We're running final tests on the extrusion process before commercialization

  • Bed temperature:  110 – 140°C

  • Printing speed : 20-50 mm/s

Nefila HIPS White 

   Nefila HIPS White is a filament made from homogeneous and non-contaminated waste in white HIPS. We are really optimistic about this filament, as we were able to extrude some filaments and print 3D objects in less than a week ! Both printability and extrusion tests were easily checked and approved thanks to the high quality of the recycled pellets. 

 This white HIPS will open the possibility to develop coloured HIPS filaments by adding dyes  to give a specific colour to the filament. 


Nylon, Polypropylene, Flexible plastic, Carbon fiber ,..

We are ready to run some R&D tests with several of other materials with specific characteristics such as Nylon, Polypropylene and many others but we don't have the ressources to start the production of five or six plastics at the same time. 


           Unfortunately our research does not always succeed

Developing a 100 % recycled ABS and PP filaments is one of our main objective but it turns out to be more difficult than expected. Here are some of the experiments . 

   Here are the steps to ensure an industrial quality for a 3D printing filament extruded with  recycled materials : 

1) Decontamination process to remove wastes and pieces of other plastics.

2) Drying inside a heat chamber to remove humidity in the plastic before extrusion. 

3) Real time measurement of the filament diameter during the extrusion, tolerance : 1.75 +/- 0.05 mm.

4) Printability and printing parameters are experimented for each materials by printing technical and decorative objects, we're printing every day with our filaments !

    Not only is our filament eco-friendly, our packaging is, too.  The design of our support is inspired by the "MasterSpool". Unlike the heavy spools supports used by a majority of filament manufacturers, our supports are reusable as you can see in the video below. Our supports have a mass 50% lower mass than classical ones (~135 grams).

For the shipping, we pack our spools under vacuum to protect our filament from any contact with humidity.

   3D printing has a wide range of applications for research laboratories and industries. It has already proven its use  in prototyping and testing specific pieces of complex projects. Nowadays, the development of new plastics with amazing mechanical properties (flexibility, stiffness equivalent to metals, resistance to temperature variations) and certifications to use them within human bodies open new possibilities in many engineering domains such as biomedical, robotics, construction and many more. 

   At Nefilatek, we want to develop industrial quality filaments which can be used by professionals for industrial projects but also by individuals who wants to design and print decorative and technical objects for their home.

Risks and challenges

Being able to produce all rewards in time and pursue research with other plastics will be a challenge for us (but we love challenges!), especially if the Kickstarter is a success, we will have to buy another extruder to respond to these high demands.

And there is always a risk of late delivery or consistency of our plastic wastes suppliers.
Therefore we have some stocks of HIPS & PC in order to be effective in case of circumstances.
