Update #26

Sample print-n-play PDF pages! ALSO: PLAYTEST THIS SUNDAY

Here's some cool stuff for you!

We're preparing the PDF versions of the game now – I really want to get them out by the end of April, as promised. We're still waiting on some content from the card-creating backers and the Webcomics Pals, but the majority of it is in and it's looking great! Here's just a small sampling of the Webcomics Pals cards:

Each artist so far has contributed at least 10 unique cards!

We're preparing the print-n-play PDFs in two versions: full size/full color, and compact/1-color. I know some people want the full experience, while others would rather save some coins and be able to print fewer pages, more cheaply. So here are samples of both templates for you to try out – let me know your thoughts! I'd love to get some feedback while there's still time to make changes.

Note as well that these sample pages feature low-resolution images for ease of download – these are just for layout testing purposes. The final files will be high-resolution for printing.

Download FULL SIZE/FULL COLOR SAMPLE PAGES

These should print OK on either A4 or US letter sized cardstock. Use the crop marks to trim the cards as needed. (The final files will allow for the cards to be printed double-sided, but these are just the fronts, for now.) The game cards themselves are 'Euro' playing-card sized, just like the actual printed game.

Download COMPACT/1-COLOR SAMPLE PAGES

We made versions of these to fit both A4 and US letter sized pre-perforated business card paper (although since that's $18 for 25 sheets at my local Staples, I dunno why you'd use that instead of just buying a copy of the printed game? But, up to you). These also feature crop marks, in case you want to print them on regular unperforated cardstock. (Again, just the front sides for now.)

To clarify: We will definitely be offering the full game in both PDF versions (full color and 1-color). But let me know what you think about the layouts and the way the files are set up! I've never printed a card game at home before, so I'm not sure which factors are important to keep in mind.

Physical tier backers: Introducing BackerKit!

Kickstarter surveys will be going out next week! Don't worry that it's too soon – it's just the first step to get you loaded into a "pledge management system" called BackerKit, which you will get an email about after you complete your survey. Here's how it will work:

  • You'll get your Kickstarter survey, asking you to confirm your shipping address, T-shirt size, etc.
  • After I've received the majority of survey responses, I'll send you ANOTHER email with a special invite to BackerKit, which is a separate website.
  • When you log in to BackerKit, you'll see your pledge and your survey info listed. If you got any Add-Ons, you should see those as well. If you paid via PayPal, you should see everything you ordered. This is your chance to verify that we got everything correct. This will be the list we work from for shipping!

Within BackerKit, you will also be able to:

  • Add more items to your pledge, if you choose – all the way through July! (For example, you can now add on 50-card decks of additional blank cards.)
  • Specify whether you want your copy of the game in English or German.
  • Modify your shipping address at any time (if you move in the next few months, you can easily update your address in the system, without having to go through me).
  • Pay for your original pledge, if you had credit card problems with Kickstarter.
  • Make sure everything listed for your order is correct before anything is shipped!

If everyone uses BackerKit, it will make my life a lot easier – check out today's video for a look at what the BackerKit interface looks like, and what to expect. It's really quick and easy, but since it's a separate site from Kickstarter, I'll be working extra hard to make sure everybody knows what's going on!

If you did not pledge for a physical tier, don't worry about any of this! You'll get your digital rewards delivered via Kickstarter. If you would like to (pre-)order physical items, use our PayPal pre-order site, and we'll add you to BackerKit automatically (after a week or two, you'll get an email from BackerKit). Then, you'll be able to manage your pledge just like all the cool kids.

Questions? Ask in the comments! I want to make sure this is clear for everyone.

Hey, let's have a playtest!

As we complete and finesse the rulebook: IF YOU ARE IN LOS ANGELES AND WANT TO PLAYTEST THE GAME THIS SUNDAY AFTERNOON, April 14, send me a Kickstarter message! I'll have the special convention-only card for you AS WELL AS my eternal thanks AS WELL AS maybe some pizza or something?

In terms of the card edges, for the color cards it seems easy enough to at least keep a straight line if you're hand cutting due to the edge color, however for the black and white I would suggest (as has been mentioned) full through lines to identify the card borders. It's not too hard if you have a slide cutter but I know not everyone has access to one.

I also think Shawn has a point on the death cards for the color version, even just making the border color slightly darker would make it easier to identify. Other than that, they look fantastic! Looking forward to plotting elaborate and convoluted deaths!

On a separate note for the con-card argument, promo cards are a common thing for card games and we have the distinct advantage for this specific game to have blank cards that we can add and modify, so if we really want it for gameplay purposes we can add it in on our own. Perhaps just putting the card's name/function in one of the kickstarter updates. It's understandable that people would be annoyed that they will be "missing" one card short of a complete set, but that also sort of misses the point of the game itself because these cards aren't going to be worth a ton of money on their own ala Magic The Gathering. I'm personally indifferent on getting the card, I'm just trying to provide a possible solution to the unrest. Hang in there David, we believe in you! (to not eat any kittens)

I plan on printing out the simple versions of the cards. Last year I printed out Cards Against Humanity and cut them by hand using scissors it is easier and faster to cut the cards out when there is an obvious border between individual cards. Can we have more crop/guide lines throughout the cards?

Creator Frank Bromley on April 14, 2013

honest;y the left card being 0.0503 in too wide is the biggest problem i have with the print and play version

@Bryan (and others): I'm not sure why there would be any ill will for not being able to acquire the convention-only card. As David pointed out, it's not that those who attend a convention are getting a "complete set" while everyone else is not. And not having the card does not inhibit game play. If you can make it to a convention, it is an incentive to drop by so the guys can personally thank you. If you can not, you are no less thanked. It's the same thing as going to a convention to get a signature or personalized illustration. Am I jealous that people who get to attend the conventions get really cool things from the people I've been following and enjoying for years? Sure - so should I feel "entitled" to receive the same things just because I also follow them and love their work? Of course not. I know in order to get the really cool "one of a kind" drawing, or get the book or comics hanging on my wall signed, I have to attend a convention.

One tip, on the color/full size version the cards you have a nice color border/bleed edge around each card. On the specialty and gift cards this is in a nice contrast color, which in turn provides a easy to see line to cut along (especially for those using scissors, though based on experience it would also be useful for paper cutters). However on the death cards this border/bleed edge is in such a similar color to the cards themselves it is hard to tell where the edge ends and where the card begins. This makes it harder to cut, especially half ways through when you don't necessary have the trim marks to go by (because you cut that piece off already). As such a different color selection for the border which would provide more contract would be a great improvement.

      David,

There's an easy way to resolve the special cards for international backers as well as the convention-exclusive card: simply give the cards to those people for free, and provide an option for others to purchase the cards as an add-on.

The main complaint that I see to "convention exclusive" cards is that there is no other way to obtain the reward for those who cannot afford to attend any of the events, due to the lack of time, money, or ability to travel. This typically ends up generating a good deal of ill will from those parties.

      1. Let's also face it: Con swag/goodies are usually fairly inexpensive items. The only thing that makes them so highly sought after is their exclusivity.
      2. Offering the international & convention card as an add-on for a small price ($5.00 or so?) eliminates any hard feelings from the other parties.
      3. This doesn't diminish the "value" of the card. Those who are international backers or attend the Cons still get something cool for free.
      4. This is yet another bit of revenue for the Machine of Death game, which can go towards the inevitable expansion.

there is a BIG goof on the color print and play version the left card is 3.5347 wide while the right is in 3.6111 in

    9. Fb_profile_picture.small

Creator David Malki ! on April 12, 2013

@Bethany – (1) The color versions of the cards, since they don't have to fit a US or A4 business card template, will just be one file for everyone. The cards themselves will be the "Euro" sized cards. You can print that on whatever paper you like (it'll fit on either US or A4 paper). (2) Yes, the expansion packs, etc, will be available for purchase later on, via our website at least. (3) It does not really require a lot of shuffling. Once or twice at the beginning of the game, sure, but not during play.

@Maik – Once we have a good chunk of things translated, we'll be sharing what we have for feedback. You will have a chance to review the translation before we ship anything – so you can choose German later (or choose German and go back to English later).

@Gerrit – Good catch on the cropping, I'll make sure that's fixed. These preview files were prepared as images, so the text is not live vectors, but that will not be the case with the final versions.

@Frank – Yes, as mentioned above in the post, the final provided files will have both fronts and backs.

    10. Fb_profile_picture.small

Creator Frank Bromley on April 12, 2013

is the final PDF going to have the art for the backs as well?

    11. Missing_small

Creator Gerrit Ansmann on April 12, 2013

@ David: Are you aware that in the coloured version, the cards in the left column are cropped differently than those in the right column? This can be seen best for the sports-equipment gift cards, where parts of the slogan were cropped as well. Also, just to be on the safe side: Some of the text looks as if it might have been rendered with subpixel hinting. But on the other hand, this could also be just to the image compression.

Creator Robin Mason on April 12, 2013

Creator Maik on April 12, 2013

@David: Can you tell us who is doing the translation of the german version? I'm a little bit worried that the - really funny - texts on the cards will be not so funny when translated. a LOT of movies suck because of a bad translation.

    14. Missing_small

Creator Bethany Barnosky on April 12, 2013

My questions: (1) Will printing on either A4 or "Letter" sized paper both yield "Euro" sized cards? (2) Will you be marketing to retail establishments, and online, as well? (ie Can I pass on the expansions for now but still be able to purchase them before the holidays?) and (3) Does this game require a lot of shuffling? (ie Should we invest in a large number of Euro-sized card sleeves?) On that last one, you might want to include some in your add-on store. Comments: Smashing! Strongly considering a Machine of Death-themed birthday party for my daughter this year. She and her friends would love it! LOVE the black-and-white option.

Yay print+play =) Glad there's a black and white option, trying to get colour printed on card is expensive! Unless I can find a way to do it at work :P

    16. Fb_profile_picture.small

Creator David Malki ! on April 12, 2013

@Micah – the cards that come with the physical game will have rounded edges, yes. Rounding the edges on cards that you print out yourself is an exercise left to the user.

    17. Fb_profile_picture.small

Creator Micah Rose on April 12, 2013

@Malki Will the physical cards have rounded edges? I plan on having a set of the black and whites that I use for the next few months, and then give away after the physical rewards come to the jolly old UK. I'll want the printed out color expansion cards to shuffle just like the regular cards, though, which will mean that rounded edges may be necessary.

    18. Fb_profile_picture.small

Creator David Malki ! on April 12, 2013

@William – Because we have almost 1000 people with Add-Ons, we need something like BackerKit to make sure everyone's orders get processed correctly. So we'll just cross our fingers!

@Michael – (1) We've added that information to a notes section that we see as admins and that will go on our packing slips, and I'm asking the BackerKit guys if we can make that field visible to backers too. But all the info has been compiled and entered. (2) The deluxe box should have room for the extra 50 cards. (3) I'm going to try and space them out, so the next one probably won't be until next month or so. But there may be other digital goodies coming in the meantime.

@Pamela – Yup! Message me with the tier you'd prefer to be on, and we'll make it happen.

@Kristen – We're compiled about 80-85% of our choices for the final printed deck, working from the sheet of backer contributions. So it's coming along nicely!

@Alberto – Included in the set of PDFs will be sheets of blank cards, so you will be able to print those off or run them through the software of your choice to make your own versions.

@Peter – Thanks for the feedback. The text, etc. in the simplified versions should definitely be pure black; it may be a PDF compression issue that renders it as gray. I'll double-check that. The gift cards are indeed lo-res for now, but they won't be in the final versions.

    19. Missing_small

Creator Peter Hosey on April 12, 2013

I've just printed off a sheet of each of the business-card samples.

Here's my feedback: I think that, in the B&W versions, all of the main text should be in pure black, not dark gray. The halftone by which the printer makes gray from black just does not look as nice. (I assume the color cards won't have this problem.)

The Gift Cards' “Brought to you by” section (everything in that rectangle) and “Redeemable for” background can stay gray; those parts look fine. It's only the main text on those and everything on the Death Cards that, in my opinion, look better black.

Also, the Gift Cards PDFs seem to be a 72 dpi rasterized export. Even the text is pixels, unlike the fully-scalable text of the Death Cards.

That's all I've got for now. I'm looking forward to the play-test.

      3 Questions:

      1) Will backerkit include the information for people who have requested a specific number of the deluxe edition?

      2) How many extra cards will fit in the deluxe box? If I purchase a deck of 50 blanks, will I be able to keep them in the box after I have created magical new content?

@Katharine - I admit to being over a barrel here. I'm not sure that giving the international backers a special card is quite fair. (I know that a convention-exclusive card isn't quite fair either, but it's at least a DIFFERENT kind of unfair.) So I'm gonna keep thinking about it, because I do appreciate the kind support from my friends around the world, but I don't have a great solution yet.
