Q+A, Stretch Goals, Add-Ons - and TIHYD preview story!

Here's a video where me & Kris answer a few of your questions and talk a bit more about the game! And get off onto tangents like we often do. If you're reading this via email, you can just click the link at the bottom of this update to come to the Kickstarter page and watch the video there, if you like.

On the main project page (next to the picture of the lagoon monster) we've started listing out our stretch goals! You guys have BLASTED PAST a bunch of them already, which is AMAZING. The coolest thing we're excited about are the Webcomic Pals Bonus Packs, which are custom game cards designed by our webcomics friends that'll be going out at no extra cost to all backers -- the more we raise, the more of those we can commission! -- and the freedom that Grand Central Publishing has given us to release free preview stories from This is How You Die.

Here is the first preview story, right here.

It's called "OLD AGE, SURROUNDED BY LOVED ONES," and it's by ’Nathan Burgoine. It's the very first story in the book.

This is one of the biggest things people have been asking for -- the ability to add individual things, like a second copy of the game, or just the poster, or extra death card tins, or whatever, to their existing pledges! NOW YOU CAN. Here's how it works:

  • First, start with a pledge tier that has some of the stuff you want. For example, if you want the game plus a different T-shirt, you’ll want “GOT PLAYED”, which is just the game itself. This is your “base tier”.
  • Go to our Add-On page and select all the other stuff you want. (In this example, you’d select the different T-shirt.) The Add-On page will then show you the amount you need to ADD ON to your pledge to get the T-shirt.
  • Come back to Kickstarter and make or increase your pledge. Select your base tier -- in the example, “GOT PLAYED” -- and then manually add the additional amount from the Add-On page. This way your single pledge can cover both the base tier and your add-on stuff. Go on to confirm your pledge.
  • Back on the Add-On page, submit our form there so we get your Add-On information! This is transmitted to us separately, but we need both that form and your Kickstarter pledge, otherwise we can't match things up and matters get all sideways.

It’s a little complicated, but so is life. If you have any questions you can always message me through Kickstarter, or leave a comment on this update! Or, send an email via the Machine of Death site.

You can also use the Add-On page to calculate how to make a pledge to the campaign via PayPal, if you can’t (or would rather not) use Kickstarter. But those pledge amounts won’t appear on our Kickstarter page, so we’d prefer that method to be a second choice, and used only if necessary.

Thanks to Craig Pierce for setting up the Add-On page! Let me know if it works OK for you! And don't...

...don't choose the spiral or you will get something unpredictable

Carlos, if you filled out the add-on page correctly, you should eventually receive a confirmation e-mail there. Either way, though, that should bump you up to the physical art book. I would suggest using the "Contact me" link if you don't hear anything by the time tomorrow's update comes.

    2. Carlos Medina on March 19, 2013

Hi there! I pledged $30, chose the "Booked" option, then saw the physical art-book extra, so I decided to get the spiral thingy as an add-on, and then changed my pledge to $35... Do I get the physical art-book? If not, what do I have to do to get it? Also... I didn't receive any confirmation email from you guys, only from Kickstarter, so I don't know if my add-on order was processed.
Thank you and Congratulations for the project!

Somewhere on the main page it says you can get more packs of blank cards. I didn't see these on the add-on page. Will they be add-ons or only available later?

    4. David Malki ! 7-time creator on February 18, 2013

@Kyle, Michael K – Also. INFAMY is sold out so if you want to make up a game card you'll have to choose TYCOON.

    5. David Malki ! 7-time creator on February 18, 2013

@Kenneth – Yeah, you could totally do that! If you just want add-ons and nothing else, then you can choose JUST THE TIP for the dollar amount of just of the Add-On amount.

@Kyle+Dave: Its actually much better to do the Infamy+Addon over the Tycoon because you end up with two copies of the game (1 regular, 1 deluxe) for slightly less money.

    7. Kacey3 on February 18, 2013

Is there a minimum pledge level to qualify for the Addons? For example, could I pledge at "Just the Tip" and then start adding on bonus packs? I only ask because one of the people in our regular game group is buying the game, and I want to pitch in with some expansions.

    8. Kyle McCowin on February 16, 2013

Ah, I didn't see the shipping charge on the add-ons so my calculations were $10 off.

    9. David Malki ! 7-time creator on February 16, 2013

@Kyle - Because of the extra shipping you pay with Add-Ons, it's pretty close. But yeah, assuming US shipping, I guess you would save a couple bucks over TYCOON by just upgrading an INFAMY pledge with an Add-On of the deluxe box!

That is a sentence that would be statistically improbable for me to ever have predicted that I would ever have to say.

    10. Kyle McCowin on February 16, 2013

It looks like it's cheaper to select INFAMY and add the deluxe box for $125 than to select TYCOON for the same effective result. Or am I missing something if I do it that way?

    11. David Malki ! 7-time creator on February 16, 2013

@BearPerson: That was my mistake, thanks for pointing it out to me! I'm typesetting these myself, and I just missed that. Grand Central is typesetting their own version for the book, so no sweat there.

@Andy: Typically you'd have to add the two together for separate items, but since with the deluxe box you're replacing the standard copy that comes in INFAMY, you can just go with $40 for everything. Thanks for asking, I should clarify that somehow!

    12. BearPerson on February 16, 2013

I guess this is just a artifact of the way the story was put on the web:
On page 7 of the story, the top paragraph renders in my browser as
", and Julia knew she'd probably end up throwing most of it out[X]
assuming her husband didn't eat it all in the next two days"
That is, at the end of the line there's a box containing a diagonal cross,
most likely some kind of "symbol not available in this font" thing.

I really doubt this would make it into a print version,
but I figure you guys might want to know.

    13. Andy The Sane on February 16, 2013

Hi David, regarding international shipping for the add-ons, do I just use the higher shipping rate?

I'm currently on INFAMY and pledged $97.00 ($79 + $18) If I wanted to add on the luxury box do I just use the shipping for the luxury box ($40) or will both items ship separately and therefore I have to add $58 shipping?

      Many thanks.

    14. Terence Chandler on February 16, 2013

Wow! Pretty sure the a la carte menu is the coolest thing I've seen in a long time. But of course, that means I had to throw more money at you.....Thank you so much for going through all the extra trouble to provide such cool extras =)

    15. Alex on February 16, 2013

My god. That story was incredible. If the rest are anywhere near as powerful, I can't wait for more!

    16. David Malki ! 7-time creator on February 16, 2013

Matthew -- Yes, the Deluxe box comes with all 6 of the extra death card sets!

    17. Matthew Meylikhov on February 15, 2013

This is a pretty excellent update. One thing for clarity, though -- if you pledged at "Got Played" and select MOD Deluxe as your add-on, does that come with all 6 of the extra Death Card sets? Or just some?
