Greetings fellow Earthlings! I'm Larke Miller, and I've written a Sci-Fi romantic comedy Short Film/Series pilot - "THE JOBS WE DON'T WANT." I plan on directing the project this summer.
The once quaint farming community of Walnut Valley, Northern California is being taken over by factory farms. Ruby, a young widow struggling to keep her organic walnut farm alive, resorts to hiring an "illegal alien," Amigo, whom she meets in a Home Depot parking lot. Little does Ruby know, this charming illegal alien is actually a reptilian shape-shifter from Pluto, recruited by evil Martians to harvest brains.
When Amigo first comes to Earth, he's quite bitter towards Earthlings, because they destroyed his home. Once Amigo gets to know Ruby and care about her, his mission to harvest brains becomes the job he doesn’t want.
This story is an allegory. I wish to address our increasingly hostile and divided society, by writing a love story about “enemies” from two different worlds.
Although the film is set in the present day, it will have a retro feel, evocative of the classic creature features. We have vehicles and wardrobe from the 1950’s.
Set on a Nut Farm, the mood is surreal. The production is fortunate to have found a charming family farm location, with wooden barn, abandoned stables and nuts trees. TWIN OWLS FARM, Maple Ridge ,British Columbia
Much of the comedy stems from the melodramatic nature of the script. Both romantic leads have an innocence to them. The humour is deadpan.
I wrote the character of Ruby (the farmer) for myself. I've acted in a number of film/tv productions including IZOMBIE, SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED, and the critically acclaimed Canadian film SITTING ON THE EDGE OF MARLENE. I'm also a stand-up comedian and have performed my original comedy on THE LATE LATE SHOW - CBS, COMEDY NOW on CTV/Comedy Network. I've written a couple of scripts that have been well received. This will be my first time directing.
Amigo will be seen as a human for the majority of the film. His transformation into his reptilian self will be accomplished with special effects make-up.
The film will be a combination of live action and computer generated animation. Noah Van Buhren, winner of Best Animation at the Berlin Sci-Fi Film Festival, has begun 3D animating flying saucer sequences and "The Evil Martian Overlords"
