About

So what's this app all about?

Great question! It's all about storytelling and imagination. We want to make an app for parents, teachers and children to create and share stories together. An app that brings children's imaginations to life and lets them be the storyteller.

The Imagistory app is based around wordless picture books. The idea behind them is that anyone can be the storyteller, simply by using your imaginations to create and tell the story from the pictures. Not only is Imagistory a fun way to tell and share stories with your children, it's also highly educational. Helping to foster the development of creativity, language and other early literacy skills.

We have some incredible books, but we need your help to finish the app and publish our books to it!

See our first two books in action below, courtesy of one of our little testers earlier this year (note: in the second video a pdf version of the book is being tested).

About the App

Not only will you be able to read a wide range of great wordless picture books, you will be able to record your stories too! Letting you save your child's stories which can be played back and even shared with loved ones (by a parent of course). You can also submit your recorded stories to us and each week we will feature the best stories in the app for everyone to listen to.

We aim to be much more than just an app for reading wordless picture books, but a platform for creating, listening to and sharing stories. We want to bring to life the imaginations of children through storytelling and the wordless picture book is the perfect tool for this.

Why Wordless Picture books?

Wordless picture books are a fantastic learning tool and are great for a number of reasons:

  • They help to foster creativity and imagination
  • They encourage a high level of parent-to-child bonding and interaction
  • They are highly educational, helping children to develop important language and early literacy skills (i.e. vocabulary, understanding of story structure and character development, inferencing skills and more)
  • They can be used in any language
  • They provide a new reading experience where the story can be told in a different way each time you read the book
  • They are very easy to use, there's no 'right' or 'wrong' way to use one
  • Their open and versatile nature means they can be used in many different ways, making them fantastic tools for the classroom too
  • They have educational benefits for children at all reading levels; from early readers to advanced readers, children with disabilities and even children learning another language

Lastly, using a wordless picture book is a lot of fun! Kids have the wildest imaginations and are already natural storytellers.

How the funds will be used/Why we need your help

All the money we raise towards our initial goal of $15,000 will go into the completion of the Imagistory app for the iPad. The majority of which will go towards the coding and design work needed to finish it.

We currently have a working prototype which we have been developing and testing throughout this year. Many of the main features including the reading, recording, saving and playback of stories are already finished. However the app needs further design and development work to be of a high standard, be able to accommodate multiple books and to be much more user friendly for parents and young children.

The app will be free to download along with a book and parents will be able to buy additional books to add for roughly $2 each. A portion of this will go to the illustrators as a royalty. The app will be ad free and will be user friendly for children of all ages. We aim to finish the app by March/April next year with several of our books ready to go in it.

If we exceed our funding goal (which would be great!) we will not only be able to make a higher quality app, but part of the money will also go towards helping the artists finish their books sooner. In saying that..

Our awesome artists and their books!

Overall we already have 10 unique and beautifully illustrated wordless picture books planned for the app, two of which are already finished and eight more are in various stages of development which you can learn about below. As the majority of the books are still in development they may change slightly from their descriptions (also note many of the books names are still only temporary). We will include more pictures from our books as our campaign progresses through our updates and Facebook and Twitter pages.

The Little Red Bucket - By Paloma Ozier (Line art and water colour by Paloma Ozier, colouring by Elaine Ngeow)

Our first finished picture book is about a little girl at the beach who loses her bucket in the water. She dives in and ends up going on an underwater adventure to retrieve it, meeting many friendly sea creatures on her journey. This story is a great first wordless picture book, it's very easy to follow and very open to the imagination.

A Backyard Adventure - By Mathew Haworth

Our second finished book begins with a brother and sister who decide to go camping in the backyard one evening. What starts off as a fun idea, soon changes as the sun begins to set and things get a little too scary in the tent. That's when their adventure starts, a journey back home across the backyard that stretches their imaginations as they make their way past sleeping snakes, rickety bridges, waterfalls and even a shadowy tiger, all the way home to dad (who's probably not surprised to see the kids again so soon ;)

Fantail Story - By Erika Pearce

This is a story set in New Zealand about a fantail who doesn't have a tail. It starts off somewhat sad as the fantail can't fly around up in the trees with all the other fantails. But one day he meets a helpful kiwi bird who has an idea to help the fantail fly, by helping building him a tail. The story follows the kiwi and the fantail as they go on a journey to make a tail. The final storyboard is still being developed, but you can probably guess how it ends.

Estimated completion: May 2014

Bubble Boy Story - By Stephen Templer

This story is about a mischievous little boy who one day decides to put all the bubble bath mixture into the bath. In no time at all the entire bathroom is full of bubbles and he is having a great time. But the bubbles don't stop and before long he finds himself trapped in a big bubble floating out the window (to the great surprise of his dad in the backyard). As he keeps floating away people all over the town try and help rescue him to no avail. Eventually half the town is chasing him as the little boy as he climbs higher and higher. We won't spoil the ending quite yet so if you want to know you will have to back us at the $15 level pledge or higher. The storyboard for this book is mostly finished and is currently being refined and tested.

Estimated Completion: March 2014

Little Lamb - By Kimberley McCone

A little lamb stands lost and alone in a paddock. Its scrapped its tiny leg and just when the story couldn't get any sadder, a young girl comes to the rescue. What follows is a heartfelt (and very cute!) story as the young girl and her father take the lamb back home to look after it. The story-line revolves around the little girl and the lamb and the bond they create as she nurses it back to health. This adorable book is sure to be a hit with little girls everywhere and is currently halfway through story-boarding.

Estimated Completion: March 2014

My New Friends the Penguins - By Chloe Or

Ever wondered what the penguins get up to at the zoo? Much more than you ever imagined as a girl on a school trip discovers after she sneaks into the back of the penguin enclosure. Given a pair of magical flippers which transform her into a penguin, join her as she gets a first hand experience of penguin life in a zoo and makes some new friends. The storyboard is currently being trialed but is nearly ready to be properly coloured.

Estimated Completion: March 2014

Ahh! A Bubble Monster - By Marc Conaco

Who knew lurking in the bath would be a terrible bubble monster. Ok not really a terrible monster, but one who has a big appetite for all the towns bubbles. Anyone with bubbles be warned, they may get eaten. This is a fairly quirky and lighthearted story about a little guy who inadvertently unleashes a bubble monster upon his small town. It can be told from several perspectives, so why and how this takes place is up to you. The story-boarding is finished and the book is soon to be properly rendered.

Estimated Completion: February 2014

The Hedgehog and the Circus - By Ashleigh Blake

A story about a hedgehog who comes across a circus and falls in love with the tightrope. Through trial and error this very persistent hedgehog learns what it takes to be a tightrope walker and in the end is able to teach his other hedgehog friends and family how to cross the road safely (and in style!). This book is currently in the early stages of storyboarding.

Estimated Completion: May 2014

The Star Story - By Lei Wen

One clear night a little girl is visited by a shining star. After noticing her wide awake and scared he decides to show her the night isn't such a scary place, but in fact has its own unique beauty. Together they journey through the night across fields, a forest and even a lake visiting all types of creatures along the way. This storyboard is finished and hopefully the final illustration work will begin soon (though it is very possible this may have to be delayed, hence the vague completion date).

Estimated Completion: Mid 2014

Dandelion Wishes - By Michael Stevenson

Last but certainly not least, Dandelion Wishes is a simple but profound story about a girl and her wish. It begins with a young girl in a field placing a wish upon a dandelion as she blows it into the wind. The book follows the dandelions journey as they are swept across a countryside and through a small town. Along the way the dandelions each find their destination one by one until the last dandelion left reaches a little boy. In reply he blows a stream of bubbles which travel back through the town back along the same path. But as these bubbles make their way back they each pop one by one at the destinations of the dandelions, granting wishes to those in need, with the last bubble reaching the little girl. What she wished for is for you to decide. This story is still at the concept stage and is soon to begin storyboarding.

Estimated Completion: May 2014

We hope you like all of our books and would love to hear your thoughts! We plan to one day publish many wordless picture books, so if you have a talent for illustrating for children or know someone that does we would love to hear from you!

So who's behind Imagistory?

Mostly me (Nick Barrett), but Imagistory wouldn't be anywhere near where it is now without the very generous help and support of many others including my family, friends, our artists, AUT and the Venture Fund, the BizDojo and their residents and too many others to name. I've been working on this project for the past two years and I'm very excited about all the books we have and to be so close to finishing the app.

I feel that wordless picture books as an educational tool have so much to offer children, but this potential has yet to be fully realised. Most people have never heard of a wordless picture book, let alone used one and this is something that needs to change. Children have incredible imaginations, I am constantly blown away by the stories they tell when we test the app and our books.

I can't wait to hear the stories kids come up with once the app's open to the world and it's my hope that one day wordless picture books are part of every childhood. But for this to happen I need your help and your pledge will go a long way to making this happen. Even if this campaign isn't for you, if you like the idea for our app and our upcoming books then please help spread the word and share it with people who may be interested.

Thank you in advance to everyone who helps back us and share our campaign, and to Kickstarter and everyone who's helped Imagistory so far.

Risks and challenges

I feel that we are well equipped to deal with any obstacles that come up given the experience and expertise we have at hand. But as with every creative project there will always be unexpected challenges that arise. For us these will most likely occur with either the development of the app or with the creation of our books.

In terms of the app, we have already developed a prototype to test out with kids that's so far working very well. It still needs significant work to be finished but already has many the features we envision being in the final app, such as the recording, saving, playback, sharing and featuring of stories. Since we already have a fairly good idea of how these features will be implemented in the final app we don't foresee there being too many risks of things going wrong with the actual development. If the release of the app is going to be delayed it will most likely be because either :

a) We find a way to make the app even better than it's going to be now that's worth including in the initial apps release or
b) The availability of our developer or designer changes within the next few months unexpectedly.

So will the app get made? Almost certainly. Will there be delays, probably not and we will try our best to stick to schedule, but it's possible.

In terms of the development of our books there will be risks that not all our books are completed on time. It is likely there will be delays with at least one of our books considering we have 8 in development by 8 different artists who all have a number of additional projects or jobs they are doing at any one time (most likely ones that are paying the bills for them). Although this is the case, all of our artists are very excited and passionate about their books so will no doubt be working hard on them. We will keep you updated on each books progress as we go.
