The Mustard Seed is Hamilton’s only community-owned grocery store, located at 460 York Blvd. We are the best place in Hamilton to find local foods 7 days a week!
What are we hoping to do?
Many people have told us they’d like to meet up with friends to enjoy a coffee or end their run with a smoothie, but there aren’t any opportunities in our neighbourhood. So we're launching a café in our store! We'll of course have a focus on local fare, have indoor and outdoor seating, free WiFi, and we’ll be opening early at 7am to make your morning commute a little easier!
Building Hamilton's Food Scene
The Co-op is part of Hamilton’s amazing food scene, and revitalizing our York Blvd neighbourhood. Our fair-trade espressos, smoothies, organic teas, and snacks won’t just be delicious, they’ll be part of connecting us to each other – and that’s what community means to us.
Help us open our cafe next month!
We are inviting you to help us open our community café. We have volunteers lined up to help create the space, but we need $10,000 for new equipment and supplies. This investment will create a beautiful space where the good things growing in our neighbourhood and region can be shared, in a space where are all welcome.
What will we be serving?
We are still developing our menu, but here are a few images from local drinks and foods that we already sell at the Co-op, which we hope to have on the menu at our new cafe:
Risks and challenges
There are many steps in a project like this, so we have turned to the local experts who helped launch Mulberry and Democracy cafes to develop our project plan. We have already confirmed zoning is appropriate for our new café use and that we have the right infrastructure in our currently building and outdoor spaces to make this work.
Our Operations Team has determined the best path forward with our point-of-sale provider to make sure checkout is quick and integrated with the rest of our inventory system. We are also looking at how to realign our bulk section to create indoor seating in part of its current space.
Other important factors our team has been working on include which of our current suppliers will be on the menu, and any new local producers and items we will be able to offer. We are looking to hire two great baristas to run the café.
At this point, we need to raise all $10,000 in order to open our café. If we don’t get enough funds, we won’t be able to open and so that is why your contribution is so critical.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
