You dream of creating your own IoT product but technically you’re not there yet. We have the solution: the AllWize K2 is a device that empowers *everyone* to connect things. It is extremely easy to use and to monitor everything you want to track such as soil humidity, movements or air quality; and much more.

AllWize creates hardware solutions to enable the creation of IoT devices connected to the state-of-the-art Wize technology in an open source and open hardware, compatible with the Arduino architecture. 

We started with the AllWize K1, we tested and it was a success! We are now launching the production of the K2 with the awesome Wize protocol. The goal is to make a similar product but smaller, more affordable and expand even more its capabilities.

Please note this is not a project by Arduino. We are building our solution inspired by their work and we are releasing it to the community the same way they do.

The AllWize K2 will enable you to create an infinity of IoT applications, nevertheless here are some examples of what you can do with our device using the Wize protocol:

  • Parking: check whether your parking spot is occupied (car sharing)
  • Air quality: increase the fight against allergies and asthma (health)
  • Vineyards: monitor climate conditions for your vineyards (wine)

We need funds to produce the first AllWize K2 but money is not the sole reason why we ask for your help.

AllWize develops the AllWize K2 for makers in particular and the maker philosophy is all about sharing knowledge. We need your collaboration in this project to experiment and find new cool use cases for our product. We need early adopters to make our product a success.

So far we have designed and produced the Allwize K1, an Arduino UNO compatible shield, also compatible with the Leonardo, Zero/M0 Pro and ESP8266 and ESP32-based boards with the Arduino UNO form factor. This shield features a Radiocrafts Wize module. We have proved we can interface the radio module and we have a first version of an Arduino-compatible library that makes it really simple to work with the protocol.

We are now moving to produce the AllWize K2 with our first standalone board using the SAMD21 microcontroller and the Arduino MKR™ family form factor.

By contributing to the campaign you will be able to receive the first AllWize K2 kits composed of: 

  • Allwize K2 board 
  • Unsoldered headers & labels 
  • uFL to SMA connector 
  • 2dbi antenna 
  • Getting started guide 
  • A new sticker for your laptop 
  • Wooden made enclosure 

With a set of AllWize K2 boards you can create your own Wize network using one of them as a single-channel gateway. You can check the Wize2Serial example code in the AllWize library repository (https://github.com/AllWize/allwize/tree/master/examples/wize2serial) on how to connect it to a computer or a RaspberryPi and forward the messages to an MQTT broker, for instance. 

But if you want a simpler solution you can use the AllWize G1, an AllWize K1 shield with a WiFi-enabled host board. Again, in the repo you can check the Wize2MQTT (https://github.com/AllWize/allwize/tree/master/examples/wize2mqtt) example to connect your own gateway to any MQTT-enabled server, local or in the cloud.

 Do you know Arduino? Then you already know Wize. We are working on integrating the AllWize K2 board inside the Arduino IDE and we have already built a first version of the AllWize library that will let you write your first Wize sketch in a minute.

The Wize protocol uses the 169Mhz frequency which was previously used by the old pagers. Remember?

So when pagers became outdated the frequency 169Mhz has been used by gas and water metering with the M-Bus European standards (EN 13757-4). Now a change in regulation has made the frequency free to use and not just for water and gas metering but also for IoT. That’s when the Wize Protocol came into play and was created.

The Wize Protocol is:

  • based on a robust and reliable standard EN-13757 - Wireless M-Bus 
  • long distance, up to 20km; but non-handover mechanism 
  • extremely low-power consumption: up to 20 years of battery life with 1 message/day 
  • bidirectional with OTAP 
  • deep indoor radio penetration 
  • no chip vendor lock-in  
  • no telco lock-in: 3 options on infrastructure 
  • self-operated, self-infrastructure network 
  • use of existing and already deployed network 
  • deploy infrastructure and become an operator of it

At this time, the AllWize K2 is at the stage of prototyping. Our goal is to have the final version of the AllWize K2 produced for February.

Knowing this, our main risks are that we fail when going from prototyping to mass production or that we don’t have enough money to produce and ship the AllWize K2.

Nevertheless, we have absolutely no doubts that we will succeed as our team is composed of the best IoT professionals that have already created or contributed to the creation of such devices.

If there is any alteration in the development, production or delivery we will immediately inform contributors and set up another delivery date as soon as possible.

Risks and challenges

At this time, the AllWize K2 is at the stage of prototyping. Our goal is to have the final version of the AllWize K2 produced for February.

Knowing this, our main risks are that we fail when going from prototyping to mass production or that we don’t have enough money to produce and ship the AllWize K2.

This is not only important for our contributors to finally receive their pledge but it is the utmost importance for AllWize as a company to produce the AllWize K2.

We have absolutely no doubts that we will succeed as our team is composed of the best IoT professionals that have already created or contributed to the creation of such devices.

If there is any alteration the development, production or delivery we will immediately inform contributors and set up another delivery date as soon as possible.
