NASA's Apollo Program: VII – XVII

William Anders: Oh my God! Look at that picture over there! There's the Earth coming up. Wow, is that pretty.

Frank Borman: Hey, don't take that, it's not scheduled. (joking)

William Anders: (laughs) You got a color film, Jim? Hand me that roll of color quick, would you...

Jim Lovell: Oh man, that's great!

Behind the concept

Generally the Apollo astronauts are hailed for being some of the greatest scientists, adventurers, explorers and heroes, but rarely are they portrayed as some of the most significant photographers of all time.

We had already been searching for a book that do these images justice, but with the recent release of the nearly 15,000 Apollo mission photographs on Flickr by Kipp Teague, our frustration grew even bigger. Because this book just doesn’t seem to exist.

It dawned on us: we make books all the time, so why not make it ourselves? To create a book which combines our love of photography with the history of space travel. A book that immortalises not only these historic photographs but also the iconic image-makers that these astronauts were.

What is in the book?

Alongside a carefully chosen selection out of more than 15,000 photographs from missions VII to XVII, with approximately 25 to 30 pictures per mission, we will start the book with a section where we celebrate the great photographers that these astronauts were and the team behind them who made it all possible. This section will tell you more about what was essentially a crash-course into becoming a photographer in space, rarely getting a second chance to shoot your images. The book will also talk about the cameras, like the Hasselblad 500 EL, that were specifically adapted for the use in space.

We already have more than enough material to make a unique book, but it is always possible to elaborate on the book content through your help. To be frank, our aim of this book right now is to underpromise and overdeliver.

If our funding is successful, an editor will finalise and put together the first section on the book where we elaborate on the astronauts, the training and the camera equipment.

The subsequent eleven chapters (each chapter will showcase one mission) we will stay as true to the original photographs as possible, including the small black crosshairs from the Hasselblad’s reseau plate, only removing dust particles and scratches and colour grading the images to bring out their true colours.

We will then meticulously run the book through pre-press and colour proofing, working closely together with the printer to achieve the highest quality possible. The book will be printed at one of the world’s leading printers with a track-record of producing some of the finest photography books in the world.

Book specifications

To create this book we will use heavy weight silk paper that will allow us to get the highest print quality and finishing to really make these images stand out.

The book is a large square format, 11.8in x 11.8in (30cm x 30cm) and weighs around 7lb (3.2kg). It is wrapped with a "NASA Blue" linen cloth to give it the luxury feel it deserves. A belly band with the moon landscape will be wrapped over the linen cloth cover. The back of the belly band will credit all the Apollo mission VII - XVII astronauts' names.

We will use full colour throughout and on top of this, we will seal each image with an invisible sealant to preserve each of the photographs.

 The full specification list is:

  • 300 page (page number might increase)
  • Acryl varnish to protect and preserve the printed images
  • Full colour offset
  • Size: 11.8 × 11.8 inch (300 x 300 cm)
  • Hardbound cover with Cialux “NASA Blue” cloth wrap and foil stamped title on cover and spine
  • A belly band wrap cover
  • Coloured end papers
  • Bright red head & tail band
  • Stitch-bound binding
  • Book seal wrapped and packaged in custom made shipping box to offer the best protection during shipping.

Get involved

We want to make this a true crowdfunding project. To create a real community around the book, to bring people together not just to contribute with funding the printing costs. We would love people to put forward suggestions that we can put in the book. Additional Apollo stories, information or any special insights that you guys might have. Any special artefacts or mementos from that time. Or perhaps you might know someone, or even are someone, who worked on the program.

We want to make this book as special as it can be, and we truly believe that with building this community, we will together be able to pull off something exceptional.

The rewards

Besides the book we will offer a series of rewards with both a book and a high-quality print of one of the Apollo mission photographs. The so called C-Prints, or chromogenic prints, are unrivalled in their sort and remain the industry standard as well as the only generally accepted digital photographic medium for gallery submissions.

We have selected three prints that will be printed in two different sizes; 11.8 x 11.8 inch (30 x 30 cm) and 19.7 x 19.7 inch (50 x 50 cm).

Our final reward, “Photograph of Your Choice”, lets you choose the photograph for your 19.7 x 19.7 inch (50 x 50 cm) print together with 1 copy of the book.

Why Kickstarter?

Kickstarter is a great platform to realise a project like this. We feel that we share a similar interest with many kickstarter backers. It allows us to really create a book that people want.

It gives us full control of all aspects of the book production, which means we can reduce costs and invest the funding straight into the quality of the book.

Who are we?

We are small team of four friends and colleagues working at a creative agency in Amsterdam. Our team consists of Floris, Simon, Joel and Delano. Our backgrounds are in Graphic Design and Art Direction.

Floris was born in Amsterdam but his love for space travel started as he spent his childhood summers in Florida growing up near the Kennedy Space Center.

Joel and Delano are both keen photographers who have been collecting and researching NASA missions over the years.

Simon originates from the UK. His love of books and publishing has led him to create a number of projects, one book in particular was funded through a Kickstarter campaign which saw his Origin of Species Variorum Edition being placed in the London Natural History Museum next to some of Darwin’s original books.

The timeline

April – August 2016 – We will start putting together the book and finalising the research for the first chapter explaining the camera and astronaut training. During this time we will be seeking any additional permissions and image rights if needed and will meticulously prepare each photograph and colour grade each image for printing. We will also use this time to explore further opportunities with new insights, interviews and any other contributions for the book.

September 2016 – We will start to prepare the book for press.

October 2016 – The book goes to print

November 2016 – Worldwide shipping starts

December 2016 – Everyone to receive their book

Risks and challenges

There are always risks and challenges with such an ambitious project as this. However, within our small team we have the necessary expertise and skills to produce this book to the very highest standards. Our international team consists of creatives and graphic designers that work together at an agency where we produce books and edit photographs all the time.

We can also draw a lot of learnings from one of the team members previous kickstarter projects
(https://goo.gl/EC6GVh) where we learnt the ins and outs of publishing and shipping the book worldwide.

We have set ourselves a comfortable timeframe to produce the book in order to make sure the project isn’t rushed and is given the time and attention that it needs. This will hopefully allow us to maintain our proposed shipping date. We will use tried & trusted shipping methods to send the book and also adequately protect the book with a custom made shipping carton to make sure you receive the book in perfect order.
