Yes, we'll be sending out a new backer update by this coming Monday.
Any updates, now that it's for sale?
Absolutely, we just wanted the next KS Update to be closer to the launch next month.
Why don't you guys post updates on Kickstarter? It would probably make it easier for your original backers.
Hi Prem, we've been posting updates via the Power-Laces.com website and the Facebook page. Our latest one includes our first advert and the shipping timeframe :)
Hey Blake, any progress on the project? It's been a long time since we have seen any news.
I am so sorry for your loss. Though it's taken awhile, progress is happening. We released a new video of the device on our FaceBook page and the website will be updated this weekend. In addition a long overdue official update will be delivered to backers as well.
I, too, would like to see the progress made- even if the progress falls in tandem or under the aegis of Nike. The person whom I'd hoped to help with a pair of these is no longer alive. Perhaps my brothers and I will be needing them before too long! Here's the latest press:
Thanks, I understand. I sent you a FaceBook message as well but I'll also say here a meaningful update will occurs within the next few days.
Hey Blake, hope you are doing well. I wanted to see if we were going to get a meaningful update before year-end as I haven't received any emails from you guys. Power Laces is the first Kickstarter project that I have backed. Since then I have backed 65 other projects and launched my own. I love getting updates on projects, even if there isn't good news. It's been over 4 years since Power Laces was funded, but I have yet to see much real prototype photos or development news since the initial video. As big fan of Kickstarter, this is what I really enjoy about backing projects. At this point, I'm not holding my breath to get my shoes, but it would be nice to have a comprehensive update on what you guys have done.
Thanks for the link, competition leads to innovation and as our device is more medical orientated I believe we still can fill the niche. We're also working to release it by the end of this year.
I'll just leave this here
We'll be doing a mass email update by the end of this year when we have a final product to show. The design by necessity has had to stay under wraps, as it's our only leverage against the larger companies entering this space next year. There's been setbacks and we had a lot of obstacles to overcome, but again, we're working to finish development by this year and begin distribution or start issuing refunds.
Can we can a kickstarter update with some photos? I haven't been getting any emails. Thanks!
When you say this year do you mean 2014 or 2015?
This is the year for Power Laces or bust. I've been posting incremental updates through my personal Facebook and direct emails. The last big one was joining TechShop in SF to have access to higher level manufacturing equipment, and we join other hardware startups basing their operations from there.
The work as late has been focusing on modifying the design and mechanism such that it scales. My experience has been building with off the shelf parts, but there's a new dimension when one has to consider mass production and component availability.
As such we'll be custom making a lot of the components, and various materials have to be tested.
We're forgoing updating the website until the product is finished at the end of the year or we pull the plug. Like I said, this is it; We're going to have a distribution worthy product by the end of this year or we're going to begin refunding backers.
Any progress? Haven't seen anything significant on FB of late and 2015 is right around the corner now...
Hey there, yes I've let the website fall to wayside a bit to focus on development. I've been putting most updates through my personal Facebook. Working out of TechShop now in downtown SF to start distributing to backers by the end of the year. You can also message my personal email at blakebevin (at) gmail.com for quicker responses.
Any update? The site hasn't been updated either. Any photos or something?
Hi there! Were working on getting the product to backers before the end of the year, with wider release to follow shortly after. The initial run will initially be limited, scaling up with every succession. We'll post more info on the site and you can also reach me through my personal email at email@example.com if you have any more questions.
Hey Blake. Any update to the project?
Thanks for the link! We're working to put our device, which is more medically orientated, out this year.
There's more than one way to autolace a shoe, and we're looking forward to finding our niche within the market. We'll be posting an update at power-laces.com soon.
I’d be the first to admit the project was a much bigger venture than I originally realized, but it’s not something that’s been given up on. It is my full-time endeavor in which I work daily on to overcome the mechanical challenges which constantly present themselves.
As I state on Power-Laces.com, the goal this year to start getting a functional and aesthetic product release into the hands of backers, made from our own assembly line, with a free upgrade to an upgrade version if the beta release deems that necessary.
Ho hum... another year down...
Thanks Gene, I completely understand where you're coming from and I try to address that in my latest blog post. I just recently relaunched the new Power-Laces.com site, with a timeline for release and future updates will be posted to there.
So Blake what's the hold up? How's the new work space going? How's the additional funding going? Let's have some photos of these Power Laces that we've all contributed towards and been waiting on for coming up 3 years now. It's sad to hear you've had a rough year or two, but when you enter into a business proposition with investors you need to keep your focus. Sadly your lack of evidence to support Power Laces has led me to be reluctant to back any new inventors on KickStarter, which is sad for those who do have the commitment and gumption to follow through on their promises. Some material evidence would be nice.
Thanks for the update Blake, sorry to hear about your loss and your general bad start to 2013.
I think all the backers know how awesome the final product will be, so happy to wait, but always nice to get updates :-)
Apologies for the late response- 2013 hasn't gotten off to the smoothest start. Suffered an injury last month that put me in the ER which I believe contributed to a nasty infection I later developed. And right as I was recovering from that I suffered a death in the family.
It delayed my timeframe B=but I've moved into the new work space and I'm building the online store up. I'll also be heading to Nevada and Florida in the next coming weeks to get some late stage capital to aid in final production.
There hasn't been an official update since September 2011, would be really nice to get some good detail.
Any update on the project?
Hi there, aiming to produce the final prototype for the initial manufacturing run by the end of the year, and pics and video of that unit will be posted before the rollout.
Hi Blake - Just wondering if we could get an update on the progress of power laces. could we see some pictures of the factory tours or product development? I can't wait to see the fruits of your effort!
I'm sorry to hear about your mother's medical setback. We should begin rolling out the initial production before the end of the year. Thanks for the continued support!
Hi Bevin- Just wonder how things are going. My mom had a medical setback this summer and I am hoping to be able to offer your Powerlaces to help her along! Let us know how you are doing as well!
Yup, and your entry was updated. Thanks, Sean!
Hey Blake! I'm not sure if you kept track of everyone's shoe sizes. I originally said size 12. Now I will need a 13.
Hey there Jonathan, just responded to your direct message :) Thanks!
Can we get an update please?
Thanks Brian! I'll make sure to update that and I'll be confirming with everyone just to be on the safe side :D
Blake, I recently moved and need to give you my new address. Should I just use the address you use when you send out your updates? FYI, I still have faith in you, can't wait to see them when you're done!
Hi there, I realize it seems to be taking awhile. A little longer than I or any of would have preferred, I'm sure but it's a learning process for me as well and I'm moving forward as best as I can. You should understand I was hampered at the start from various factors.
One of my initial mistakes as someone new to startups was slightly underestimating the cost of the project, which would have been fine but, and I never published this before, I didn't receive a lot of pledges. After a project is successfully funded Kickstarter tries charging all pledges at once, and continues to do so over the course of the next few weeks.
Whatever the reason, whether incorrect card information given or actively moving money out of the account to neg on a pledge, in the end a sizable proportion of pledges was never received. I've always been one for a challenge though and after the initial setup costs, including legal fees and research and development, I began having to rely on my own income to continue the project which has slowed developments slightly but I am happy to do as I believe in what I'm doing.
A couple of months ago my contract finished at my "day job" and I was informed that the business would be sold for the land, so I took the opportunity to leave that position to work on my projects full-time. Of course I do need to make a day to day living and cover expenses so by necessity I have to split my time between various operations, one of which is a publication company which is my only source of income as of late so I'm forced to devote some time to it.
Again, I apologize for the length of the project but as I've said I'm working to move forward with manufacturing by late 2012/early 2013 and I thank you all for extending your patience.
I hope you all enjoyed and had a safe 4th of July, and please have a great weekend!
Not long now til the 2yr anniversary of funding this project... seems like a distant dream now... I travel all over Asia, including Vietnam, Thailand and Philippines (I was in all 3 in the last week) and never have any trouble with internet. Forgive me for sounding jaded, but there's been very little apparent progress and I know for a fact other kickstarters have seen blood in the street for delays of a few weeks, let alone months and years. I'm amazed that 50 people here are so complacent (those who placed pledges for actual shoes). I know what you built and showed was a prototype, but some real updates and expectations vis-a-vis your "imposed deadline of late 2012" would be greatly appreciated. The recent update on your website from May did little to quell the inner feeling that my $200 has done little except help fund your vacation around Asia. I'm happy to be proven utterly wrong.
Internet connection has been spotty- been in SE asia checking in with manufacturing contacts. Updated the power-laces.com website recently with some technical concept images, though had to leave a little of the inner workings out.
Absolutely, just settling in now and getting over a nasty bug but there will be an update at power-laces.com this week.
Hi Blake, Can we get another mini-update on whats going on? How did the factory tours go? any pictures or design screenshots?
Hey there, thanks for writing. Of course I understand a bit of frustration as regards to product release. I still believe that I'm track for a mid to late 2012 release. Most of 2011 was spent working with an engineer in the UK, trying to shrink the mechanism as much as possible while maintaining durability. It's important to note that I've always said that the prototype I made, though it worked as a demo, wasn't fit for mass production and needed almost a complete overhaul.
I admitted that the skills for that was beyond me, which was where the engineer came in. The design work was done in multiple stages, with a lot of back and forth. With his help, we came up with a solution that seemed to fit the bill. He was only a mechanical engineer though, and to really complete it I will need to finalize some subsystems with software and electrical engineers. it's pretty standard work, we won't be reinventing the wheel, so this part of the process will only take a couple of months.
The software is really the heart of the project, as this device will really be made for the medical community. As such there will be systems in place for things such as gait monitoring and even physical rehab.
A few of the things that have slowed me down over the past few months include my personal health and my job. I'm fine! But there have been some internal issues I've been dealing with that have lead to short jaunts of time where I can't do much of anything. And my day job has gotten more demanding of my time steadily over the last year, (and I believe might be a contributor to my health issues) which was one of the reasons I decided to quit and focus more on my project, full time.
I've already bought the tickets overseas, and will be leaving in late March as soon as my contract is up with my job. These past few weeks have been spent moving nonessentials into storage and such. Australia will act as my homebase for the next few months for trips into Asia. I have family out there, along with a few people who have ideas for the cosmetic design of the product- nothing that will inpart any manufacturing delays.
I suspect finding the right manufacturer will only be a matter of weeks. When it's all totaled I believe that I will meet my imposed deadline of late 2012. I appreciate everyones continued patience, and please, don't hesitate to contact me at my personal email address if you have any questions or just want to talk! BlakeBevin [AT] Gmail[DOT]com
Hi Blake, it seems you've really slowed down with this project. From when we initially backed you and your hyped up positive attitude, to now when you're touring a lot of the world still in search of a manufacturer and discussing designs. Can you please give a in depth update of exactly what you have been doing with your time and the funds we've supplied you?
I'll be in Melbourne, but if I make my way up there I'll definitely let you know! ;)
