Espresso Manifesto is a seven minute animated film that reconsiders the origin of coffee through a colorful world of fantasy and science fiction. A mysterious cafe set beside an ocean of grass, a silent observer, metallic serpents, rolling robots, and one lingering question: Why is coffee just so delicious? The answer may be more sinister than you think.
"Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were, but without it we go nowhere." -Carl Sagan
The idea for the story came to me while watching my grandfather look out of his window for hours on end. He had been struggling with dementia and I wondered if it had robbed him of his imagination, or if in fact it was running wild, creating fantastic worlds for him to roam. Espresso Manifesto is the world that I've created for him, sipping his coffee, letting his imagination run free.
The majority of Espresso Manifesto is completed, as I've been working on this project for a couple of years. I work in a coffee shop by day and animate by night, splitting my time between this film and freelance work. Coffee and animation are my two greatest passions, making Espresso Manifesto my dream project. It has allowed me absolute creative freedom while pushing my skills as an animator in the process. This has been a truly amazing experience, but now I've come to the final stretch and I really need your help to complete it!
YOU'VE COME THIS FAR ON YOUR OWN, WHY DO YOU NEED US?
I am entirely of the mindset that music and sound design carry just as much weight as the visual side of story telling. The problem is, sound actually is worth it's weight in gold. The audio side of film production is extraordinarily expensive, and for good reason, these are amazing artists producing the second half of a film, bringing it to a level that visuals cannot attain on their own. I'm going to be hiring an audio production studio to both create an original score and produce some great sound design for Espresso Manifesto, really allowing this world and it's inhabitants to come to life, hopefully all thanks to you! So with your generous pledge, I will be paying for audio production, film festival submission fees, and of course creating the rewards that I truly hope you'll enjoy!
A couple of my favorites are the special thanks and producer rewards, complete with your name in the film's final credits!

THE FUNDING BREAKDOWN...
I have received several quotes of up to $18,000. Yikes! But as I've mentioned before, this is to pay extraordinary artists to help me tell my story in a way that I can't possibly do on my own. The work is normally done on a per minute basis, and Espresso Manifesto is on the long side for an animated short at seven minutes, so that is a large reason for the high price. I'm looking to work with a very high level company that will quote in the area of $6,000-$10,000. I also plan on submitting to upwards of 80 festivals, which sounds like a lot, but there are actually thousands of film festivals out there, each ranging in entrance fees anywhere from free to $100.
Risks and challenges
Luckily for this project, 99% of the animation and rendering is complete, but as with any endeavor worth pursuing, there are a few challenges. As I'll be submitting the film to a large number of festivals, some may have specific parameters involving when I can release certain aspects of the film to others. I only see this as pertaining to sending out finished DVDs and HD downloads, though I may not run into any restrictions at all. I back up my files like crazy, I back up my backups and then back that up and keep it on a hard drive non locally, but you never know what kind of Aristotelian domino effect could take place and tumble all of these efforts. Finally, and I think most likely, I could wake with an incurable case of amnesia, and may in fact be a government super soldier.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
