Das Keyboard 5Q Kickstarter February Update: We started shipping

Hi Backers,

The Das Keyboard 5Q has begun shipping. If you have been notified of an in incoming shipment from Hong Kong this is probably it.

Once you receive your Das Keyboard 5Q, you *must install the mandatory firmware update* and Q software. Start here: https://www.daskeyboard.com/technology/q-software/

To get started, watch these videos: https://daskeyboard.github.io/getting-started/

We are delivering US layouts first. International layouts (105-key, EU, DE, etc.) will be sent afterwards.

There is more to do (105-key layout, Mac/Linux software, API, etc.) and we are happy to have completed this manufacturing milestone. We thank all backers for their support, their patience and understanding about long delays.

Enjoy!

So I got the keyboard. Build quality surpassed my expectations. I'm very happy with the build of this device. The metal finish is a nice touch.

The LEDs seem to put off an RGB shift when my eyes go across the keyboard, a bit bothersome but not the end of the world.

I have the firmware up to date, and the software installed. Is there a place I can go to download profiles that community members have created?

      Thanks!

    2. Das Keyboard Creator on

@Mark Green Yes, Skynet Shipping is a carrier that is being used, so you should be able to receive the call.

    3. Kyle Tuft on

@Nick Glad I could help. I haven't had the solid ruler style like you're mentioning, but I have had zero problems with the feet, so if its any consolation, they are fairly effective.

My backer number is #2,694, and I did get the expedited shipping; don't know if that changes anything, but there you are.

@kyle - thanks for the review and pics! I'm kinda bummed about the feet on the bottom - I think I prefer the solid ruler style from DK4. Do you happen to know your backer #? By the looks of it, they're shipping later backers first, as none off us with lower numbers seem to have gotten it.

Mine just arrived two days early than what FedEx stated. Had to pay about 40€ for import taxes in Spain.

      Backer #2675. US layout.

@Nick some of us have posted over under the campaign, but here's my initial thoughts I posted there:

Here's my unboxing album, with some thoughts and first impressions:
      https://imgur.com/a/jRCaT

All in all my reactions are good - very solid keyboard as you'd expect from Das, not too loud or hard/soft (Cherry MX Brown is a good comparison), heavy, doesn't move around, really great magnetic palm rest.

I said it before, but I don't really like the font - it's a little better than I anticipated, but at a glance some of the keys take a second to recognize. My old keyboard had the home/pause/scrl lock etc. keys in a different location, so I'm relearning them just a bit here, and some of the letters are pretty tricky to recognize immediately: D, O, P, R, K, S, 5, L, T... I just don't understand this decision Das. I have the blank translucent keycaps, and they actually look awesome, so I might just switch or mix and match, but I definitely still think this font was the wrong call.

      Some minor gripes:
      - the function lights like the caps lock, num lock etc. are just holes with an LED way down below them, and they're honestly hard to see and determine if they're on or not.
      - The initial color wave effect is pretty nice, but there's no way to go back to that preset once you've started playing with profiles, and I wish there were. Software thing, so not a big deal.
      - The pipe effects are pretty dim; you won't likely see the side pipe colors if you've got overhead lighting because they're recessed, underneath the angled side of the board, and not terribly bright. They're nice though in dim light.
      - The pipe around the Q button does not work on my board, and there's no way to enable or change it in the software. Again, I'm sure that will change, but it is a bit annoying.

I'm honestly overall pleased with the product, shipping delays aside. I've not gotten into the software as much yet, but from what I have done there's enough to play around with in IFTTT and Zapier to keep me busy, and make use of the board's special features, that I'm happy.

For a Kickstarter, strictly looking at the product, this is very well designed and functional. Excited to see more custom API capability rolled out.

For those few who have gotten it already, can you guys give us some details on the keyboard? Build quality in comparison to the other das boards and whatnot? Does it sound like a 1940's typewriter (I assume), or does it have the "tinny" sound like someone smacking a pipe? Give us some details, please.

In the US. No notification in email. Nothing in my FEDEX delivery manager dashboard.

      Is this cause for concern?

    13. Eric Yuen on

For my delivery, the delivery man just called me if there is anybody home then he came 15mins later. There is no email nor SMS alert in advance.

Backer #175 here. Not even a hint of a whisper about when I'm going to get something. So not only can I not change the shitty font because they're not doing a 105 char replacement key set, it turns out I don't get the keyboard either. Well, that's one way to stop me complaining about the font...

Apparently there are NO SHIPPING NOTIFICATIONS if you're in the USA unless you have a Fedex account and have also signed up to Fedex delivery management service. Early bird backer 3,384 here, US East Cost, alt key set, expedited shipping. Nothing yet.

    17. Ryder Donahue on

I have not received a shipping confirmation yet? Should I have?

    18. Eric Yuen on

I just got mine an hour ago. I only have a Mac, without upgrade the firmware, am I able to still use it as a regular keyboard?

There is a terrible metallic, tinny, long lasting echo after each tap on the keyboard, sounds like someone banging on a sewer pipe a couple of floors below. Or the echo of a cheap, out of tune piano that lingers after each downkey. It's really annoying, I haven't heard anything like this from previous Das keyboards, or Topre, or Razer. I don't think the keyboard is suitable for everyday use unless I'm listening to music or loud white noise. Further, it's heavier than my classic clicky M, wtf?

    24. Nate Ferguson on

@EvanWilsonCall - no, no email notification from FedEx. backer 3657. i paid for expedited shipping as well.

      @nate_ferguson, @eric_wood, pics or it didn't happen.

Also, did you get notifications in your emails that it was en route? what backer numbers were you?

It's weird Das says: 'hey, we're shipping' TODAY, on the same day some people are receiving. Wanna pin down the disconnect. If they began shipping days (or weeks ago, if it is arriving in the states today from hong kong), then why didn't they post anything at the time? it's like they're not even trying to do themselves any favors or give themselves credit. Making the whole situation dumber for everyone. Straight up starting to look like trolling 'round here.

Wow. I hope that the engineering adage holds here "They will forget that it was late. They'll never forget that is broken". If the product is great, everyone will forget that it was late.

Woohoo! I got my FedEx notification and I was hoping it was the keyboard.

Note for other folks- you need to sign up at fedex.com to get notifications for ANY packages coming to your address. These didn't come from Das, but from FedEx itself. Its really helpful to know when packages are coming (even ones you didn't order).

I am disappointed there is no Mac support. I'd be willing to contribute to get it up and running if necessary. Because right now, its just going to sit in a box until that's ready.

Is your UK firm called Skynet Shipping? I got a very suspicious phone call claiming to be from them. But if they cannot authenticate themselves better I may not be able to risk paying the duty to whoever it is on that phone.

      Robert Pearson on

Did anyone read the release notes? Where is Mac support?

      release notes:
Removed the key press effects, until they are production ready.
      - ie. doesnt work, we'll remove that crap, and think about it later. easier than fixing it

Reduced the run time for the bouncing light effect.
      - ie. its easy to play with timers and make sure blinking 1-5 seconds earlier works. I have no fracking clue what i'm doing, but if I keep doing my internship, I can get that good job after kolledge.

Display the firmware version when device is plugged in
      - ie. this looks really fracking easy to do, and will make it look like we are releasing updates. I'm so frackin kewl!!!!1

Display a link to download page, when a new firmware is available
      - ie. dude, they showed me how to do links in class today! this internship is frackin awesome!!!!

Implemented a firmware upgrade logic and UI (not operational yet).
      - ie. I have no fracking clue what i'm doing, but I added some ##### comments, and the next intern can figure this crap out...
