Our mission is to create innovative fashion by fusing our work with the craftsmanship of talented artisans from Guatemala. Empowering families with a sustainable production model.

To maximise exposure for this project we have already secured a place to show this collection at LONDON FASHION WEEK via Fashion Scout and Mercedes - Benz Fashion Week GUATEMALA. This will enable the project to result in a GLOBAL and INTERNATIONAL audience honouring the artisans work.

Our proven international record and differing styles, combined with the unique and beautifully hand woven, beaded and embroidered techniques and sustainable sourced materials will help us develop social and environmentally conscious statement pieces for our 6 Look capsule collection.

We will work together with 3 co-operatives, each of them masters in their own techniques: Beading - ADIBA, Weaving - LAS ROSAS and Embroidery - CHUWILA.
To maximize the project impact, we have planned to deliver knowledge exchange workshops for the artisans, to enhance their specific creative needs.

Nelly Rose will design the textiles for the collection and MEÜS will be translating these into garments using cutting edge construction and design.

TEXTILE TECHNIQUES DEVELOPED SO FAR!
TEXTILE TECHNIQUES DEVELOPED SO FAR!

By backing this project you will be making this collection possible.

Every pledge you give will go directly towards sustaining and supporting craft and livelihoods, providing materials, delivering workshops, enabling us to reach the villages and deliver the designs.

Artisans Work:  Each co-operative will be in charge of making the respective textiles for the collection.

Fair Wage:  The prices are set by the artisans themselves, enabling a cost system, covering material and  production time.
We respect, honour and encourage this.

Denim:
Together with the hand-made textiles we will be using a base fabric created by The New Denim Project, 100% cotton and 100% sustainable.

Documentary: We want the story to be as captivating and powerful as our first hand experience, so are going to produce a full documentary.

We will screen the documentary in London and Guatemala and have already had interest expressed from the Ace Hotel, in London and QÜID in Guatemala. We want to apply to Guatemala's Fashion Film Festival too!

How we made Societas? Will show you the full story: Ranging from meeting the makers, sharing artisans stories, our creative process, adventures and more behind the scenes material.

Artisan Visits: Costs of traveling to the co-operatives rural areas for: Collection briefing, textile sample production, final garment production and to document the making of the collection.

Advertising: Sponsored social media content, printed Look books photographed by renowned Guatemalan photographer Manny Rionda and our artisans stories.

We feel a personal attachment to this project as we are a two-women force coming together to visualise this concept on our own, and in the process reaching out to other women in the world.

The story is between LONDON and GUATEMALA supporting the co-operatives at the source as well as advocating for fair trade and employment in the fashion industry. Artisans need to know that their crafts are relevant and valuable to our culture.

Artisans represent the second most important job at rural levels. There are more than 1 million artisans that depend on the sale of crafts to generate income for their families and their children's education.

80% of them are women that have been fighting against machismo and want to be treated as equal within their communities. They have prepared themselves in more than one craft to be able to provide to their families and demonstrate their potential. Collaborating in projects that matter, will encourage them to be confident and to see how meaningful their culture and innate art is.

  • We are empowering Families.
  • To make a real impact in the current situation of craftmanship we are focusing on making this collaboration viable for retail sales.
  • Having stockists will provide a sustained income for the artisans.
  • As we are directly commissioning the craft, we will donate a % of retail price back to the co-operatives.
  • The % of retail price will allow the co-operatives to invest in looms and materials to produce their own designs.
  • We have spread the work across 3 separate co-operatives in order to employ and generate maximun income.

The project will result in 690 yards of commissioned textiles and 7-8 months of secured income for 158 women and 11 men.

  • Showcasing this collection internationally and getting a minimum of 2 stockists will prolonge income for the artisans.

Allowing the project to grow in this direction is a way of motivating the young generations of artisans to keep learning and mastering the inherited techniques.

We believe in a culturally enriched world.

London Nelly Rose / Guatemala Sofía Contreras-Paredes
London Nelly Rose / Guatemala Sofía Contreras-Paredes

We, Nelly Rose and Sofía Contreras-Paredes, met across borders at the International Fashion Showcase. As independent designers with our own labels, we use fashion and creativity to empower traditional craft and to improve the quality and standards on both sides of the industry.

Our vision and strong values allowed us to take the next step together and produce this international collaboration.

A strong love for colour and a distinctive illustrative abstract style defines both her work and call for positive change. After graduating from London College of Fashion, Nelly has dedicated her creative career to a game-changing approach through encompassing and preserving the beauty of traditional global craft processes in her work.

She has worked with high profile organisations such as the British Council and delivered creative workshops for "The Women of the World Festival" at the Southbank Centre and also consults on a number of projects.

Nelly has worked on collaborations with countries such as Kenya, Indonesia, Palestine and Ethiopia.

GLOBELLE by Nelly Rose will be launched at London Fashion Week in September 2017. Societas will be part of the presentation to maximize our collaboration reach.

Meüs is a creative entity established by Guatemalan Fashion Designer and textile experimentalist, Sofía Contreras-Paredes, in 2014, in order to fulfill her need of sharing her vision on textiles and fashion. Its aesthetics are clean, detailed and structured. Meüs embraces elegant simplicity, chaotic experimentation and malleable concepts to create artistic and beautiful goods.

Meüs collaborates constantly with Industrial Designers, fellow Fashion Designers, artisans and artists to promote and help grow the design industry in Guatemala.

It also invests in education via two platforms:
#metamorfosistextil: Teaches creatives about textile manipulation and fibers.
How to: Facilitator for the realization of creative project, counsultancy and guidance.

As part of our efforts to bring change to the communities, we have designed knowledge exchange workshops based on their creative needs. We asked the women what beneficial skills we could share with them.

Las Rosas (Weavers):
They want to learn how to innovate in their designs to compete in a commercial market.
1 x Workshop working on moodboards, concepts and how to design products for commercial sale.

Chuwila (Embroiderers):
They want to learn how to draw their patterns free-hand.
1 x Workshop working on translating drawings into stitching, composition aspects and collage making.

Adiba (Beaders):
They want to learn a creative process for creating their own designs.
1 x Workshop working on original designs and shaping.

The Co-operatives story and crafts will be published in our Societas Artisan Stories to increase their exposure and enable their future projects to thrive with further independence.

MILESTONE

ASPIRATIONAL MILESTONE

Duplicates of the collection will be made, resulting in MAXIMUM exposure between Guatemala and London. Nelly and Sofía will have the complete collection in their home countries for exhibition and presentation and to generate press coverage

- London Fashion Week.
- Presentation format in Guatemala.

This will enable us to explore the option of increasing our capsule collection to 10 looks to generate a higher income for Co-operatives and enable more of our designs to be seen by the world!.

PLATINUM MILESTONE

Full creative potential to be reached. We can begin commercial production. Variation of colours, designs and size (S,M,L) sampling to be made to grow our chance of getting stockists in the UK and U.S.

Risks and challenges

Manufacturing:

Design: Products that are handmade will always differ slightly by the individual nature of each design, size, patterns and colours.

Production delays: We are aware hand-made products take longer to be made, that is why we will working sample production 2 months prior to Societas first presentation in London.

Material stockout: Artisans purchase their materials in small retail stores, color stockout is a normal problem. Societas will be buying the respective materials directly from the manufacturer to avoid this scenario.

Collection Fitting: Societas uses standard measurements for the creation of this collection to ensure good fitting for wider audience. Samples will be made in Medium size.
If you need further information about sizes, please contact us and we will provide you with our size chart.

Stockists Orders: By having half of the team in Guatemala we will be ready to overcome any production - orders problem.

SHIPPING

Societas reward shipping will be handled by UTZ BOX, Guatemalan courier company and My Hermes, London courier company. Once your reward has been sent, you will receive a tracking number and update emails.

Please be aware your country may ask you to pay taxes on the delivery, these are not covered by Societas.

Societas Campaign profile will update you on every stage of the process, and inform you immediately of any difficulties we will encounter.
