About this project
bionicTOYS turns building bricks into flexible play. Our collection of patent-pending flex-bricks let you truly get creative as you bend and stretch them. Inspired by nature's own flexibility, build creatures that mimic real life movement and then go wild!
Best of all, add them to your favorite building bricks, like LEGO® Technic or Tinkerbots®, to truly flex their power.
STRETCH it, BEND it, TIE it, TWIST it! bionicTOYS is flexible enough to work with anything you might create. It´s not magic, it’s science!
Flexible, soft materials, like flex-bricks, are being used to create amazing innovations in design and technology. The world of bionics and robotics are two such examples that use flexibility to blend high tech capabilities with life-like functions. As a result, the future will be a lot more flexible!
bionicTOYS wants to bring that same exciting world to basic play! Kids big and small will get hands-on experience with the principles of flexibility.
Nature is amazing, isn't it?! And bionics can teach us about how to apply that knowledge in our everyday lives. Learn while playing with bionicTOYS:
- The same mechanical laws that make some animals move can also be applied to a catapult game.
- Explore potential energy and force at play.
- See how elasticity stretches, friction slides, and recoiling bounces.
Experiment and see! After playing around with the Fish Fin, Sten applied his new understanding of flexibility and force to build a unique coat hanger (from a toy!). Simply play and then apply your bionic knowledge to make new things!

Tinkerbots® with Our Flex-Bricks
Get really inventive using bionicTOYS in combination with the robotic construction sets from Tinkerbots®. For more information about Tinkerbots®, visit their website.
Advanced Builder Set
LEGO® Technic Pieces
We find that LEGO® Technic pieces make great "bones" for our flex-brick "muscles". Therefore, each Kickstarter set includes all bionicTOYS flex-bricks and LEGO® Technic parts needed to construct your Reward model. However, it's impossible for us to buy new LEGO® Technic parts in large quantities directly from LEGO®. Due to this, each set includes second-hand LEGO® Technic parts in excellent condition.
- Each Kickstarter set will not come with instructions. Instead, there will be instruction videos available on our website: www.bionictoys.de
With a successful campaign, bionicTOYS flex-bricks will be made in Germany with injection moulding and will have two types of flexibility available.
ADDED BONUS: Make each flex-brick however long or short you want it—just cut them with scissors.
Marcel Pasternak is a product designer who looks to nature for inspiration. bionicTOYS was first created two years ago as part of his Product Design master’s thesis. Studying the principles of motion, he recognized the pure beauty of flexibility used by plants and animals to move and transform. As an avid LEGO® fan, Marcel constructed case study models that could mimic organic motions. Working with LEGO® Technic—which became like the bones of these structures—he experimented with his own design until he could find a structure that resembled the flexible muscles and tendons: bionicTOYS flex-bricks.
Marcel is supported by co-founders Andreas and Stefan. While Marcel handles the design, daily operations, and general magic behind bionicTOYS, Stefan oversees marketing and sales, and Andreas handles all legal-related matters.
Now, with your support, Marcel’s invention can become a real product, a great addition to any building brick collection, AND show kids and adults the science of bionics at play. Let’s reimagine construction-based play together!
We also offer WORLDWIDE SHIPPING from Germany and the highest German SAFETY STANDARDS.
Risks and challenges
We are confident about reaching our March shipping date.
However, one thing to keep in mind is that we plan to ship with custom-designed packaging, without having any experience in packaging design. Naturally, Marcel will do his best to design packaging worthy of such a great colorful product. However, we've also been advised that this takes time, especially for the inexperienced. We hope this won't complicate anything down the road and, if so, we will be completely transparent and inform you of any necessary delays or changes made to the entire package.
We don't anticipate any delays with the start of production since everything is already in place. We have begun our partnership with a German injection moulding company, which is currently producing the first test run of our flex-bricks. These flex-bricks will then be sent as soon as they can to a German material-testing lab so that we can get our clearance certification by December.
We also have lined up a professional logistic company that will help us pack and ship the product on time.
