Choreographic Project Mentoring Program
For 43 years Mordine & Co Dance Theater, under the direction of Shirley Mordine, has created and performed contemporary dance in Chicago and beyond. Throughout her career Shirley Mordine has seen the mentoring of young talent as central both to the continued growth of dance as an art form and her mission as an artist and teacher. In 2002 Mordine translated this philosophy into the Choreographic Project Mentoring Program. Mordine selects promising emerging choreographers to develop a new work on the company. The chosen choreographers work intensively with Mordine over several months of rehearsing, learning, and creating. The mentees receive not only the benefit of Mordine's guidance but also rehearsal space and trained dancers with whom to create the work. At the end of the mentoring process the work is presented in a staged concert for the public.
NEXT 2012 will present the work of the Emerging Artist Mentoring Recipient and current Mordine & Co dancer Mary Kate Sickel; two Mordine & Co alumni dancers who will return to Chicago especially for this presentation: Judith Mikita (1984-1987) and Scott Putman (1992-1998) will each perform a solo; and Shirley Mordine will offer a preview of her new work, Visitors.
We are presenting NEXT 2012 on Sunday, June 3 at Architectural Artifacts, a beautiful multi-level showroom of intriguing objects from around the world.
