About

UPDATE JUNE 7, 2013  --  A heartfelt thank you to those who pledged to this project and those who took time to read some of the excerpts as well.  I am still hoping to illustrate the project--including a calendar to match the book illustrations.   Details will be forthcoming on my website and at readexcerpts.com

UPDATE:  Backers pledging $25.00 or more will also receive a 11"x17" poster of the beautiful graphic illustration of "The Wolf And The Lily" by Alexandrescu Paul.  (No text will appear on the poster itself)

Backers pledging $100.00 or more will receive a digitally autographed illustration from the interior graphics of Book One, "Destiny and Desire" to be signed by the artist.

Hello!  I am hoping that the video above, and this write up, will help to capture your imagination (and, therefore, your patronage) with my concept of creating a hybrid of a full-length work of fantasy fiction and a graphic novel by bringing the characters and action in the story to visual life for the reader to enhance her or his enjoyment of the story.

To accomplish this goal, I am seeking funding so that I can hire the brilliant young concept artist, Alexandrescu Paul, whose work you saw in the video  and who I asked to design the gorgeous cover for Book Two, “The Wolf And The Lily,” of The White Wolf Prophecy series, which drew your attention to the video and this project.

Some of you reading this might know what a “graphic novel” is. But for those who don’t, it is not a book riddled with eroticism (as the name might imply), but in the basic sense is a story told mostly with comic book-style or other drawn illustrations—but it is not a “comic books” as such. (Nor is my story!) Graphic novels can be fiction or non-fiction, and some, in fact, have even won prestigious awards such as the Pulitzer and Hugo (as listed on Wikipedia.) It might surprise you to know that Batman: The Dark Knight Returns and TV series like Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead are available as graphic novels on book sites such as Amazon. The graphic novel is a hugely popular and growing genre—and that is why I believe illustrating my book(s) will appeal to a wider audience, female as well as male.

Once again, however, I am not looking to create a graphic novel in the true sense of the term, but a hybrid version merged with a full-length novel and illustrated with beautiful graphics.

Therefore, with this Kickstarter project my focus right now is to seek sponsorship support to illustrate Book One, “Destiny and Desire,” of The White Wolf Prophecy, a two-book series. Book One is a full-length (110,000 word, 300-plus page) fictional action-adventure romance fantasy loosely set against a medieval background. (You are invited to read excerpts from the book, as directed below.)

You saw the above black-and-white cover designs for Book One within the video presentation which I did using photos and special effects. (But the stunning hand-illustrated cover design for Book Two which opens this project and the video vividly shows you the high caliber of graphics I envision for my novel.

 MORE ABOUT THE BOOK

Written for a young female as well as male adult audience, The White Wolf Prophecy series is a fantasy adventure that incorporates many exciting elements, such as action-adventure, romance, danger and suspense, mysticism, mystery, magic,  some adult content and situations (but no eroticism), a compelling hero (Tarin) and heroine (Lily), and dastardly villains who are both human and otherwise.

It is certainly my hope that readers will find Book One, “Destiny and Desire,” entertaining and exciting enough to look forward to the release of Book Two, “The Wolf And The Lily.”

The White Wolf Prophecy foretells the coming of a great warrior and champion who will lead the clans of both wolves and men in an epic battle to save the kingdom from encroaching evil. But it is also a love story as well as a coming-of-age tale in which 17-year-old Tarin, the young hero, transforms from teenage boyhood to young adulthood over the course of the two hooks (which the covers show).

Here is the story synopsis of Book One, “Destiny and Desire,” the focus of this project:

“Verushka, a giant white wolf with blue eyes, will find Tarin, a baron's teenage son, lying badly wounded in the forest following an assassination attempt on his life. The great she-wolf will use her cunning and her body to shield the unconscious youth from the harsh elements of winter until those of his own kind can rescue him. While safeguarding Tarin, Verushka will discover a psychic bond with the young human and realize that in age and appearance he is the embodiment of the "True Born One" spoken of in an ancient augury passed down among generations of white wolves.

(From the book:    Like some breeds of wolves, Verushka saw the world around her in color, and something about this light-haired, turquoise-eyed human youngster suddenly resonated within her memories of old clan legends passed down for as long as such stories could be told over and over. It had been prophesied among the white wolf clans for generations that there would come among them a human man-cub with hair the color of the Father Sun and the Mother Moon, whose eyes reflected the Earth Goddess’s own, and he would lead the clans of both wolves and men into a great battle to save the kingdom.)

During his journey to manhood Tarin will become the supreme alpha male, or sovereign, of all the white wolf clans as well as discover his true heart's desire as he gains renown throughout the realm as "the protector of the people," the mysterious golden knight riding a white stallion in the company of wolves.”

To help potential Creative Patrons decide if they would like to sponsor this illustration project, multi-Chapter and Bonus Excerpts from Book One, “Destiny and Desire,” can be read at:

 www.readexcerpts.com

I created this webpage specifically for this Kickstarter project, and here is why
:

A)   To introduce you to the book and its characters and action, and to allow you to judge their merits to warrant illustration, as well as explore my writing style and ability to tell a story.

B)   On www.readexcerpts.com you will be able to READ EXCLUSIVE BONUS EXCERPTS FROM FOUR ADDITIONAL CHAPTERS from Book One, “Destiny and Desire” of The White Wolf Prophecy that do not appear on my regular author’s web.

The purpose for this is to allow prospective backers to better understand the scope of the story and elements involved in the telling of it.

It is from doing so I am hoping that interested sponsors will find this story worthy of illustration so that I can hire talented young concept artist Alexandrescu Paul. (More about him in a moment.)

C)    In addition, at www.readexcerpts.com I also discuss some of the passages from Book One, “Destiny and Desire,” that I might wish to have illustrated to bring it to full visual life for the reader beyond the images I have tried to paint with words.

D)   At the website a sneak peak is also provided of what is coming in Book Two.

 E)   And for anyone wondering why Tarin, the young hero, is unclothed on the cover of Book One…that is answered at www.readexcerpts.com as well!  (No worries!.. no erotica is involved.)

F)   So simply put: the more funding I receive for this project, the more I can illustrate it to really make it an entertaining and memorable reading experience for my audience.

MORE ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATIONS & THE ARTIST

So the book is written. Now I need to illustrate it.

And to that purpose, I have discovered a vastly talented young concept artist and illustrator named Alexandrescu Paul, who I know can capture and bring to visual life the characters and action in my story as I have also envisioned it.

Although I do not personally know Alexandrescu Paul since he lives overseas, I recently discovered him on another website. It was because I was so impressed with his magical and stunning illustrations that I felt he would be my preferred choice to help me create an unforgettable reading experience for fans of the romance fantasy, action-adventure, and graphic novel genres.

So I hired this incredibly gifted young man to create the cover for Book Two, “The Wolf And The Lily” of The White Wolf Prophecy series. I did this so I could include it in this project presentation to show you how brilliant his work is and how wonderfully he will be able to illustrate the interior graphics of the novels.

All I did was provide him with basic descriptions of the main characters (including Verushka, the white wolf with blue eyes) and gave him a few passages from the book to read to help him grasp my author’s vision. To mine he then added his artist’s vision and concept for the cover—and now I am able to so proudly share it with you here in this forum for the first time.

This gifted artist grasped what I wanted immediately and in less than two weeks created the gorgeous illustration you’ve now seen!

In the video above you saw other examples of Paul’s fabulous work, and many more of his amazing creations can also be viewed at his website:

www.lexpaul.com

Although I am the one seeking your patronage for this project, Paul was gracious enough to grant permission to allow the use of his magnificent illustrations in order for me to show you the superior quality of the type of graphic I wish to incorporate into my novel. (And needless to say, if I reach my funding goals here, I plan to commission Alexandrescu Paul to do the illustrations, as he is my first and foremost choice.)

Your funding support of this project will also, in essence, make you a patron of this rising young artist and provide the means for him to further showcase his fabulous illustrations to a worldwide audience.

MORE ABOUT THE AUTHOR

A little more about MOI (me):

Like many writers, I am a bit reclusive…more of a behind-the-scene type of person.  But I  do exist.

To help allay any doubts you may have, I can direct you to my author’s website, which has been well-established for some time. I write under the pen name of “R. L. Whittaker” and on my official website at:

 www.rlwhittaker.com

….you will see other eBooks which I have written in the past and that were posted in the Amazon Kindle Store some time ago and which are still available. The White Wolf Prophecy series is my fourth book and has taken well over a year to write, and therefore has been my primary focus.

And on a personal note, the wonderful music composed for my book videos on YouTube was written by my son, Adam Rainis.  Links to  the book videos and Adam’s website are also on my author site. His credentials include having one of his themes, “Epic Journey,” used last year in commercial promos for the renowned WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment organization) and the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championships.)

Adam did not write the music for the video for this project simply because of the deadline for a short film project he is currently committed to scoring.

Also on the RLW site are excerpts of each book I’ve written and/or published thus far including limited preview excerpts for book one of Prophecy. HOWEVER, once more I want to direct you to go to

 www.readexcerpts.com

...to view the Extended Bonus Excerpts from four additional chapters from Book One, “Destiny and Desire,” of The White Wolf Prophecy, which do not appear on my author’s site but are EXCLUSIVE to viewers of this project proposal only!!

HOW FUNDING WILL BE USED

I have brought my project to Kickstarter to find visionary sponsors who like the concept of creating a visually-stunning hybrid novel, and who will therefore contribute the funding that will assist in the hiring of Alexandrescu Paul to begin illustrations for Book One, “Destiny and Desire,” of The White Wolf Prophecy series.

And I assure you that this remarkable young man deserves this opportunity to showcase his incredible gift to the world in this manner.

Again, please view his amazing and imaginative illustrations at

www.lexpaul.com

$$ invested in this project will be meticulously documented and accounted for, and applied to illustrate the graphics for the book(s) as has been discussed.

Sponsors will be sent regular updates to allow them to monitor how the project is progressing as it develops, and review how funding is being utilized.

In addition, although the focus of this project is to fund illustrations for Book One of The White Wolf Prophecy in order that it can then be released in a timely fashion, if I surpass my initial funding goal, that may also allow me to commission Alexandrescu Paul to illustrate the second book in the series as well.

WHEN WILL BOOK ONE, “DESTINY AND DESIRE,” BE RELEASED?

I could release it to Amazon and other bookstore sites today…but it would not have the illustrations I desire and envision for it to enhance the reader’s experience and enjoyment.

Right now I am planning for 12 illustrations if the minimum goal amount is reached; perhaps more if that is surpassed.

How quickly any concept artist can finish an illustration depends on a number of things, including current workload (other commitments) and the number of illustrations to be created.   Also, the degree of difficulty and detail involved in each illustration is a consideration. For example, a graphic showing an epic battle scene would require more time to illustrate as opposed to drawing a character or two.

I would tentatively hope to have the finished book ready for release around Christmas, or in early 2014….which isn’t that far off given we are rapidly approaching the half-year point.

And the quicker I can acquire funding sponsorship, the sooner I can hire Alexandrescu Paul to start on the illustrations for book one.

Once again, patrons of this project will be kept fully apprised of the progress of the illustrating process, as each new illustration will be posted on the www.readexcerpts.com site and an email sent out to notify you of their creation and posting.

Accompanying the finished illustration will be the pertinent passages in the book that inspired it. In this way you will be able to literally see the book come to visual life and be reassured that funding is being applied as it should be and that the project is proceeding as promised.

GETTING THE FINISHD EBOOK TO SPONSORS

Contact will be made to each qualifying sponsor to determine the best format to send her or him the finished eBook.

MORE ABUT THE FUNDING GOAL

Minimum: $2700 — reaching this minimum goal level would allow me to commission Alexandrescu Paul to create at least 12 illustrations for Book One, the focus of this project, and he could begin in June. Any amounts received beyond this would be applied to either adding additional illustrations to the book and/or perhaps even applied toward illustrating Book Two, “The Wolf And The Lily” in The White Wolf Prophecy series. If this were the case, patrons would be informed of the scheduling for this. (And…should there be an excessive amount of support for this project, the application of surplus funds would perhaps be applied to furthering the success of the book series, such as through expanded marketing, or even putting them into actual print. But again, all Creative Patrons will be kept fully informed.)

A SIDE NOTE ABOUT REWARDS

In a sense,  a  “reward” is immediately free and available to anyone interested in becoming a *Creative Patron* of this project.  You have the opportunity to explore in more detail the project concept and read extended excerpts from Book One, “Destiny and Desire,” which are not even available on my author’s website.

In addition, by going to www.readexcerpts.com you are also given a “sneak preview" of Book Two, “The Wolf And The Lily,” in the series, and find other information about the books.

And all contributors will be kept informed as each illustration is finished, as discussed above, regardless of the amount pledged.

 FUTURE PLANS FOR THE SERIES

Ultimately I would like to see both books put in print form, especially if they prove successful as illustrated hybrid eBooks.  Nothing is more wonderful than to hold in one’s hand a tangible printed book beautifully illustrated.

Also,, because I am visually impaired….it is my hope to eventually have the books offered as books-on-tape for the visually impaired.  Listeners would not be able to see the gorgeous graphics, but in these cases illustrations are usually described to the listener in full detail for them to appreciate and imagine in their minds.

FIRST AND FOREMOST…A HUGE THANK YOU IN ADVANCE

Certainly goes to everyone who has taken even a moment to consider this project…and most especially, of course, to those individuals and groups who believe in its merits and have chosen to become a Creative Patron.  Perhaps they share my philosophy that to touch someone else’s life in a positive way…even if he or she is a stranger…enriches our own life as well.

Risks and challenges

Although it will be my intent and goal as the author to diligently market the finished illustrated novel to book outlets and other resources, no one is ever guaranteed a “bestseller.”

But I do firmly believe that with proper marketing, the merits of the story and Paul’s brilliant illustrations can make the book(s) a potential success. And I do feel that the hybrid between a graphic novel and a full-length novel will have broad appeal. But more importantly, if you become a Creative Patron because you like the idea of this project, love Alexandrescu Paul’s stunning and romantic illustration for Book Two, and read and enjoy the excerpts from Book One and thus look forward to the fully illustrated book’s release…then that tells me the series will be well-received.
