About

The core idea is to assemble a diverse group of performances that are forcefully mediated by technology; performances that would be otherwise direct, LOUD experiences. The only thing the audience needs to get in the door is to bring a smartphone with earbuds. An obvious example of an act that can play with that idea might be a metal band. Typically, their audience would either hear them loud in a live context [up to 11] or through earbuds when listening to recordings on the metro [again, up to 11.] What happens when the onstage thrashing skips the amps and goes straight to headphones?

This project explores what might happen when those experiences are conflated. Are there other kinds of performances can test those boundaries? Playing with the degree of disconnect between what is being seen performed live and what is streamed through headsets [synchronous? asynchronous? amplified? narrated? translated?] opens lots of possibilities. We’re assembling the widest range of possibilities within those constraints.

A consideration: FURTHERMORE is not a nightclub, it’s not even a commercial gallery — it’s a working studio that presents projects that it believes will build a stronger, smarter art community in DC. It’s a free event, so this isn’t a revenue-generating project — it’s an opportunity to get a bunch of smart people together to try out interesting ideas.

The show features new works by Armando Lopez Bircann, Richie Brown, Miles Forrester, Kirsty Little, Katie Macyshyn, Carolina Mayorga, and Ian McDermott.

While the artists are performing pro-bono I would like to be able to offer an honorarium to offset some of their expenses, especially for those coming from out of town (from as far as Ontario!).
