About

Project Narrative

Greetings and salutations.  I’m Bob Rogers.  I write historical fiction.

The Laced Chameleon and Companions
The Laced Chameleon and Companions

Together, these three novels entertain, educate, and highlight successful entrepreneurs. For this reason, the novel, First Dark, is already used by the United States Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York to encourage entrepreneurship. Examples, based on former nonfictional slaves (Hiram Young and Benjamin Montgomery) who created successful businesses, are highlighted in First Dark.

Book 1 of Series

Inspiration for First Dark came from a painting created by the late artist-historian, Don Stivers. The novel provides a name and a life behind the face depicted in Don’s “Proud to Serve.” After twenty years of research, First Dark was published, giving voice to Don’s character and some ordinary people of this great land–African, Apache, Cheyenne, European, and Mexican. (See the synopsis, Don’s painting, and excerpt.)

Book 2 of Series

New Orleanian Francesca is the protagonist in The Laced Chameleon, released in March as a prequel to First Dark. With her hands and clothing stained with the blood of her aristocrat lover, Francesca vowed revenge against his assassin and set about her new work as an amateur homicide detective. An enslaved woman suggested entrepreneurial pursuits for Francesca. (See the synopsis, photo of Francesca, and excerpt.)

Book 3 of Series

The third related book, a novelette titled Sacrifice at Shiloh Church, is slated for editing and publication in June. Sacrifice is likewise a prequel. The protagonist, the Englishman James Darby, also first appeared in First Dark. (See the synopsis.)

Summary

The two novels and the novelette were meticulously researched. The books identify nonfiction characters and have bibliographies on the web. While highly entertaining, at every opportunity the novels educate and turn attention to entrepreneurship. More importantly, after the dust settles on the discoveries, action, humor, tears, and romance in these books, readers again realize that we are all “the other” and that we are really more alike than different.

Rewards

In short, the rewards are books, signed limited edition Chameleon posters that include Francesca’s portrait, and me as a lecturer/performer.

See the sidebar for details.

About the books

  1. The Laced Chameleon and First Dark are available and designed as follows: print, Kindle, Nook, iPad, iPhone, Kobo, Sony, etc.

  2. Sacrifice at Shiloh will be available as an ebook only: Kindle, Nook, iPad, iPhone, Kobo, Sony, etc.

So, where will your contributions go?

The editing and production costs for the novels are already paid.  What remains to be done are the professional editing and production of the novelette ebook on multiple platforms.  Those expenditures will be dwarfed by the expenses and fees for venues and travel in the launch of the book tour. One potential venue is before a convention of 20,000 attendees.  True to my military and IT background, I’ve laid out a plan to first acquire venues that have contract deadlines of 1 June 2014.  My plan notwithstanding, it has been my experience that as I anticipate and plot, Murphy (of Murphy’s Law) is always somewhere in a corner of my office developing project surprises to spring on me at the worst possible time.As in my past, I’ll cross those bridges as I reach them with courage and agility.

Important Reminder:

Remember, you can join me and participate in this exciting launch project only if the project goal is met; otherwise, we get nothing.  Yes, it's all or nothing!

Thanks

Thank you so much for joining the launch team and adventure!

Risks and challenges

There are many moving parts to this project. Any of these could cause delay. Key rights negotiations for photos used on the front and back covers of my books are completed and signed. However, my professional primary editor could have some unforeseen incident make her unavailable. My publisher could cause delay in the custom digital conversion of my third book. The negotiations with the large organization whose convention is essential could falter.

The pending book is my fourth. I have a backup professional editor who is familiar with my work. Of course, I can hire another that can be recommended by friends who are authors. Likewise, if necessary, I can hire software engineers to complete the required digital conversions.

My IT background of forty plus years will serve well in such changes of plan. The crucial negotiation for a place in the convention is of high importance to the success of my marketing initiative. A revised plan (read new) would delay and diminish my ability to achieve sales goals this year. Even in this low tech question, I have business acquaintances from my years of volunteer community service who can help with my negotiation for inclusion at the New Orleans convention.

In past projects, I worked for and achieved success. I expect no less with this one.
