At its core Melancholy Republic is built upon the best and most poignant memories from JRPG stories, their cities and their music. Exploring classic JRPG cities such as Final Fantasy's Midgar and Lindblum or Chrono Trigger's Zeal are key inspirations for Melancholy Republic. The greatest JRPG moments are found in uncovering the hidden corners and small stories of the game's populations.
Melancholy Republic tells the tale of the ambitious and flawed Claire C. Lockridge. A female politician whose efforts to end the corruption at the heart of her country will forever change her life and the course of history. The story is told across four chapters, each with its own memorable characters and their personal stories. Using a mix of beautiful illustrations and art to tell the a deep, multi-layered tale, explore the city of Lorna, speak to hundreds of characters and get lost in the mature, story based adventure of Claire C. Lockridge.

Melancholy Republic has received an interim British Video Game Certification from the British Film Institute in order to qualify for tax relief on any production costs. This means more of the money raised will be spent on development, therefore increasing the quality of the final product.
Exploring the beautiful rich city of Lorna is a key feature of Melancholy Republic. Unlike many games in which you see only one side of the city, Melancholy Republic will feature multiple areas to truly reflect the city state capital, from the rich elegance of parliament halls through to the saddest darkest corners of the slums sky rise.
Some events in the story will require your participation. Melancholy Republic will not force repetitive or annoying gameplay mechanics. Instead interesting mini gameplay mechanics will appear thoughout the story, these will vary from investigating crime scenes, sneaking through parliament at night, canvassing for votes or using your powers of persuasion.
Helping the people of Lorna
Lorna is a large city, full of interesting people to meet and help. Beyond the main story's tragic narrative there are many other stories to uncover and learn about across the city.
The State of Lorna: 1588CB: 'The Mountain City State'
The collapse of the Lornase royal family came suddenly and violently. The tide of revolution led by the aristocrats swept throughout the city turning soldier on soldier and friend on friend. Those who were thought to be royalist were killed as the promises of the new republicans were echoing across the capital. The landowners and elite ensured a system of stability within the Republic but riddled it with schemes to benefit themselves. Although the Republic has been stable for nearly half a century, the scars left by the aristocratic coup and their forcible removal of the royal family still run deep. Pressures on the capital of Lorna are increasing as the political, economic and technological landscapes are shifting. With the addition of the bordering state's civil war, Lorna is experiencing an influx of refugees gathering in slums at the edge of the city.
Claire C. Lockridge, a newly elected senator, is to hold office and seat within the Central Parliament of Lorna, taking her place as representative of the prosperous timber town of Dallena. With her two aides and the unlikely friendship she forms with the 'Armoured Princess' Marianne, Claire seeks to end the corruption and sadness that ravages the heart of her country. Little does she know the lives she affects and people she meets along the way will forever change the course of history.
Claire C. Lockridge "The Noble of Justice"
Claire C. Lockridge, a noble by birth, is from a wealthy landowning family in the forested hills of Dallena. Elected into office as senator following the death of her father who held the same position before her. Claire moves to hold her seat in the capital at the start of our story with lofty ambitions to ensure she lives up to her family name. She is driven to end corruption, poverty and the suffering that ordinary citizens face no matter their nationality, race or gender. Her time in the capital and the stories she will uncover will shape her world views and decisions forever.
Marianne E. Dawnmark "The Armoured Princess"
Marianne Dawnmark is the last descendant of the Dawnmark royal family who once ruled over Lorna. Born from the captured Cassandra Dawnmark, she is the second daughter of the King and Queen who went into hiding for almost twenty years. Marianne was granted reprieve from her family's crimes, and was 'gifted' the title as 'Guard of the Capital'. She is used by the politicians who designed her fate as a symbol of the royal family's sworn fealty to the elected representatives. She believes in atoning for the Dawnmark's crimes and fulfils her role as 'Guard of the Capital' with fiery resolve. Granted the nickname 'The Armoured Princess' by the people, she is often mocked by those who hold office.
Syrus Anagar "The Old Guard"
Syrus Anagar, a parliamentary aide that has served many senators in his twenty-five years as an adviser. He is part of the Perservor Families; the longest known group of family houses in Lorna, extending back five hundred years. He served Claire C. Lockridge's father before his mysterious death and is considered a family friend to the Lockridge house. He has vast knowledge of the other houses that have influence and all other senators within the halls of Lorna's Parliament. His knowledge will be a vital asset as well as his logical and calm advice.
Arna Rosanna Mirabell "The Courting Enemy"
Arna Rosanna Mirabell is the youngest daughter of the Mirabell family from the neighbouring country of Halerfelt. Whilst her country has been at civil war for many years, politics still plays a major role in securing funds and support. Arna has been sent by her father to Lorna in order to court the wealthy politician Ascer Brauidus for marriage, in hopes of gaining further political and financial support for her family. Not one to be a lady of tradition, Arna asked for a position within the parliament. The Brauidus family arranged for her to serve as secretary to the new Senator from Dallena, Claire C. Lockridge.
Video Game music has been one of the greatest influences in many of our favourite gaming moments. In the same spirit as JRPG classics, Melancholy Republic will feature a full collection of rich, memorable and melodic compositions in a style perfectly suited to the themes and world of Lorna.
Cloud Runner Studios is delighted that the music for the game will be created by the talented Metronomix Studios. They are collaborating with this project to create the deep and melodic collection of music required and have a tremendous amount of talent and experience in beautiful music compositions. The game's music will be hugely important throughout the storytelling and will also be offered for sale once production is complete as well as being included within some of the rewards.
Metronomix Studios is a new music recording studio in the North-West of England comprising of two young musicians who specialise in production and composition. As well as being classically trained, both Max and Alastair are about to graduate from two of the top music conservatoires in Europe. The combination of these skills means that the pair are able to produce stunning original compositions at the highest production level.
Nicholas Spargo @MelancholyRepub
The creator and director of Melancholy Republic. Nicholas has built most of what you have seen of the game and the Kickstarter will allow him to get more help on board to complete it. He has a BA(Hons) in Journalism and Video Production. Nicholas is an ex Physics teacher, a writer, pixel artist and mapper. When he is not messing around in RPG Maker he is marvelling at his JRPG collection and playing through Final Fantasy 8 or Persona 4 for the tenth time. (He also has a cat.)

Kelly is a co-writer and editor for Melancholy Republic. She is an MSc student at the University of Oxford, and is a qualified Geography teacher. In her spare time she both teaches and learns Japanese. Kelly loves to travel and has lived abroad in Canada. Her favourite games are The Last of Us, Guild Wars 2, Lost Odyssey and Persona 3.
Alastair Adams (alastairadamsuk)
Alastair Adams is a pianist and composer from Manchester, UK. Having started on the piano when he was 7, he's been into music for well over a decade and is currently in his final year of a BA Hons Music Production degree at Futureworks Manchester. Alastair specialises in John Williams-esque orchestral film music, although his favourite composer of all time is Mozart. Alastair is also a co-founder of Metronomix Studios, an up and coming UK music studio. Max McGuire (Maxmcguire)
Max McGuire is a composer from Manchester, UK. After being brought up playing piano and violin Max later swapped the violin for the drums. Max has drummed for Manchester band Shooting Pigeons in venues across the UK for a number of years and has achieved national airplay with the band and also with another project named Max and Gabrielle. Max's compositions heavily evolves around large orchestral arrangements, coupled with synth and guitar sounds. About to graduate from Leeds College of Music on BA (Hons) Music Production, Max is also co-founder of Metronomix Studios. If Max isn't composing he is most likely gaming or eating Mexican food. Completing a game of this scale and ambition would be impossible if not for Kickstarter. So far all costs have been handled by Nicholas Spargo personally. The funds secured would allow for extra members to be brought onto the team to complete the required illustrations, art, sprites, writing and mapping. A small amount would cover bills and living costs for the duration of the development too. If we managed to exceed our goal, all extra funds would be put into increasing the quality of the game by finding more specialist team members and focusing on extra detail across the city with even more areas that would otherwise be omitted.
Risks and challenges
Being the only full time member of Cloud Runner Studios has meant I have relied upon free-lance workers and contributors. The amount of mapping and writing required means the task is a challenging one. Kickstarter will allow me to bring on more people to work full time on creating the world of Lorna I want to achieve and ensure the final product's quality.
We are lucky to be using a stable software package and we have a very good understanding of our limits and goals for the final game. The tremendous amount of world building and planning thus far has meant that we have a clear vision of time and work needed to finish the game. We have also made contact with many talented individuals who can be brought on board with the project, if funded.
Kickstarter is a fantastic opportunity to gain publicity for the game and is vital in creating the funds required. With the funds I will be able to bring the necessary people into the team and therefore Melancholy Republic will be completed to the standard I have envisioned.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
