About this project

Once The World's Largest Painting

Niagara 1979 by Gene Davis back at Artpark:

recreation 2017

Artpark is launching a campaign to re-install Niagara 1979 (The Painted Parking Lot), by Gene Davis, for the summer of 2017.

In the summer of 1979 Artist Gene Davis (whose estate is held by the Smithsonian American Art Museum) installed an Artwork titled, Niagara 1979.  It came to be known as The Painted Parking Lot and it was incredible.  Gene Davis spent weeks hand rolling sixty, 2-foot wide by 364-foot long lines in 9 different colors.  This artwork was widely covered by the media and everyone in the community came out to experience it. At over 43,000 square feet, The Guinness Book of World Record's hailed it as the largest painting in the world at the time.

Now that same parking lot is covered in black top with standard white parking lines. With permission from the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Artpark is launching a campaign to recreate Gene Davis's Niagara 1979 in that same parking lot using his exact design. Artpark has been working with Sherwin and Williams and will use the same industrial paints found on the runways at airports, in specially formulated colors, to make this project come to fruition.  Armed with 18 inch paint rollers and miles of masking tape Artpark Adventure Staff and a group of volunteer professional painters will spend the month of May 2017 hand rolling lines just as Gene Davis did. JOIN US!

Dr Anthony Bannon, Executive Director Burchfield Penney Art Center, talks about the conversations he had with Gene Davis during the summer of 1979:

“By night, the Davis painting of 60 stripes, each 2 feet broad, in pale green and rose, takes on the super-imposed color and varying oblong shapes of cars to become a kind of giant collage. By day, the skateboard generation takes over and children hop, skip and jump on its surface.”                                                                                                                      -Kay Kritzwiser 1979

“Just what the observer makes of it is up to him, according to Clarence Wood, the artist who supervised the design’s execution by a team of eight Artpark interns.  The project is meant to incite ‘discovery, surprise, an element of participation.’… The project consumed close to 600 gallons of paint and seven miles of masking tape marking the two-foot wide stripes.”

-Rita Truschel Niagara Gazette June 27, 1979

“[Artpark] has put visual, auditory and tactile experiences of fine and uplifting nature within the reach of thousands who had not previously been able to experience them.”

                                                                  -Lockport, NY Union-Sun & Journal June 25, 1979

“What is billed as the world’s largest painting will be completed today.  Artist Gene Davis is painting stripes on a parking lot at Artpark with the help of Clarence Wood.”

-Buffalo Evening News June 27, 1979

Who We Are

Artpark and Company is a 501-C3 charitable not-for-profit organization that provides programming within Artpark, the New York State Park, in Lewiston, NY.

Since its formal opening on July 25, 1974, Artpark has successfully forged a new role for the arts in leisure. Artpark is unique as a public park and as a space for art. There is nothing like it - anywhere.

As one of North America's most innovative summer destinations, Artpark offers a full spectrum of engaging entertainment ranging from major theatrical tours and productions, symphony and mainstream concerts at our 4,000-seat Main Stage Theatre, rock concerts at the 10,000-seat Amphitheater; home to an award winning concert series featuring popular rock and pop performers, and 150 acres of scenic land and trails for daily visitors.

Created especially with the family in mind, Artpark also offers art, theater, and rock camps for youth, a variety of weekend family programs, outdoor festivals and public art. The park includes numerous hiking trails, nature sites, fishing docks and picnic areas. There's something for everyone at Artpark! Over 250,000 attend Artpark every summer.

This is the Artpark idea: to take the finest in performing and visual art and make them accessible to everybody. Artpark also seeks to foster an understanding and awareness of the many and varied forms of art and art makers. Since its inception, it has served as an active prototype for a truly public art.

Here in this idyllic setting, you are welcome to relax and play, enjoy great theater performances, discover art, and perhaps, discover the artist in yourself.
