Just finished assembling my print and play version w/dice and played first game with my wife. Enjoyed it, I'll have to try and get some pictures up. Thanks once again for getting those dice to me :)

We are going to try halving the total number of resource dice available next time we play.We found with 2 players selecting resource dice never really mattered in regards to order there was always plenty of dice.

Thanks for all the hard work with the KS and delivering a great game

Just a couple of comments regarding the game. I've received it, unboxed it, played it with my partner, and there was only a point in it at the end of the game that we played. Before I say anything, just want to say I am very happy to have supported this game, thanks very much Luke for all your efforts in running this KS and getting this game out so close to the predicted time!
      A few notes:
      - The insert is awful. I know this is a perennial argument, but I am a sleever, I use sleeves that only just fit the dimensions of the standard cards and are a basic level of protection. However even after sleeving they still wouldn't fit in the slots. So into a Deck Box they went and into the bottom of the box. Smash Up did this so right with their trays, allowing just enough room to sleeve with thin sleeves and still hold the cards perfectly. The animal & villager tokens too have gone into a small, 5 compartment plastic box which sits under the insert. We used baggies to keep them separate at first and that was just an extreme pain. The only thing I actually use the insert for is to hold the dice. This is hardly unique for Castle Dice though, there are a lot of games that just get the insert so utterly wrong.
      - The dice aren't as fantastic as I've heard a few people say. There are inking inconsistencies with quite a few of them, a few flashing marks on edges where I don't think they were polished up properly. I am mostly indifferent when I look at them, I have certainly seen nicer dice.
      - The cardboard tokens, boards and cards were printed quite well though and look very neat, as did the rulebook. Very nice there!
      - It took a little while to get used to the sequence of turns and work out when to play the appropriate cards, but by the end we certainly came away with a close game and with every intention of playing again. As I said before, despite the one or two niggling issues with design/manufacture, this is very much a keeper in our games library and will definitely get played again. All the best!

Hey Gregory. If you use the Wise Grandfather, you have to keep any barbarians you roll.

    4. Gregory Lipscomb on August 7, 2013

I played 2 games of Castle Dice this last weekend and really enjoyed it... I did have a rule question, when playing the "Wise Grandfather" card, how are barbarians (if any) resolved when rolling those two dice back into the world pool? Are those dice re-rolled, discarded, or kept by the player of the card?

    5. Justin van der Merwe on July 31, 2013

the game looks awesome btw, the rules seem very clear (hopefully I'll get it to the table on the weekend, if not definitely next Tuesday). My only two comments... the box is a little thick and in what order are the backer names, I thought maybe alphabetical at first but then it doesn't quite fit a pattern.

    6. Justin van der Merwe on July 31, 2013

delivered by Parcel Force (so Royal Mail), got stung for an import duty - annoyingly the 'handling' fee was almost as much as the import duty (still better than other couriers)

    7. AliceXVI on July 31, 2013

      @justin who delived yours?

    8. AliceXVI on July 31, 2013

for anyone who has recieved theirs in the uk. who did it come with? was it royal mail or someone else?

I received my box of dice! I looked back through my updates and couldn't find a link to a final clean print-and-play. Did I miss it? Or has it not been released yet?

@Max & @Luke, same here. I'm resending since I emailed Dave before you stated in your update to use the specific subject header of "Castle Dice Issues". Have been able to play a couple more times and teach a few more people. Very happy with the game! Thanks

      Hello Luke,

I haven't received my reward yet and I've sent an email and no one has replied to it.

Today, I've asked for a followup.

    17. DrSpunj
      on July 6, 2013

Email sent, thanks Luke! It didn't hinder our enjoyment of the game at all, I think I only set 2 or 3 aside and for just the two of us we had plenty of others to roll. :)

    18. Luke Peterschmidt 12-time creator on July 5, 2013

DrSpun - we had one other person with a dice issue, so you are one of the unlucky ones. Go ahead and send an email to and he will hook you up. Sorry for the issue and I hope it's not so bad you can't play while you wait for your replacements!

I got mine about 1 week ago and I just found the time to play a couple games with one of my boys which we both really enjoyed!
@Luke - Nearly all of my Stone dice are blemished somehow. 5 of them have burn marks on one side or peeling plastic edges and faces while most all of the others minor similar white stress marks in the plastic around multiple edges. Has anyone else reported this as a production defect to you? I took a picture and can email it to you. I can't say it changes the playability of the game any except maybe one die that's really peeling quite a bit on one side, but they just don't look fantastically great next to all the other dice on the table. :(

      @Rob LeGood
Mine arrived an hour ago, I am in Saskatoon.

    21. Rob LeGood on July 3, 2013

Anyone in Canada get it yet?

    22. Stephen on June 29, 2013

      Hey Luke,

We played for the first time last night, and had a blast. A few questions that were ambiguous to me after playing through, mostly to do with confusion in gathering.

      1) With the Pork Chop, if someone uses the pork chop, do they gather NO more dice for the remainder of the gathering phase, or do they gather again when it comes around the table?

      2) In the same vein, does the King's Messenger affect the whole gathering round, or do you simply miss a single turn around the table? Same question for the Daugher and the Squire.

      3) On the Alchemist (KS exclusive card), I'm assuming this was in error, but the icon in the top left is the choice icon, but the text speaks to it being using in the build phase. It makes more sense in the build phase, so I think that was in error.

Had a lot of fun, look forward to playing it with more people!

@michael and @kirk. You may know this already, but here's how things work from the publishers side. I want to make sure you know that discount product is not something ANY KS publishers can really do much about.

When we make a game, we set a MSRP. In a traditional (non-KS company), the publisher sells to a distributor at a steep discount because they order so much (roughly 60% off that MSRP). The distributor then sells to "retail stores" at 45-50% off of MSRP. Most brick and mortar (real location) stores then sell at MSRP (some discount a little).

The internet has created "non brick and mortar" stores. These guys have very low overhead - no staff, no rent, no fire insurance, no inventory, etc... These folks do what we call "box flipping" - they take pre-orders, then when they have the order in hand, they buy from a distributor as if they were a retail store. When the game comes in, they change the label on the box and ship it out. Because they have no overhead and they get great shipping rates due to volume discounts, they are happy making very small profits per box and can offer steep discounts. Technically, distributors are not supposed to sell to box flippers, but clearly, at least some of them do. Some retail stores do both retail and box flipping as well, making it even harder to stop.

There isn't much a publisher can do about the practice. Publishers also need to keep their prices at MSRP to support the real world retailers as they provide a key resource (a place to play) - the last thing we want to do is be part of their problems.

We try to put in some exclusives (like the art prints) when we can obviously as well. We also try to give our backers input that non-backers won't have - you should all expect to hear details about the expansion very early and be asked to playtest if you want for example. Lastly, we try to get you the product first (we brought a tiny amount to Origins, but that was for marketing - we lost money on every copy due to air shipping costs).

In summary, I hear your frustrations and we share them, but the system is not really in the publisher's control so I wouldn't expect it to change. Of course, if a KS totally blows up and gets into stretch-goal madness, you should expect to do WAY better than if you get your product from a box-flipper, but that won't happen if everyone waits...

    24. Michael Caldwell on June 28, 2013

It's a weird balance. Kickstarter isn't a store, to be are helping to bring a project to mainstream, not just pre-ordering....but then again, if so many people start to see that products they back for, say, $80, suddenly (and often immediately after the end of the project) is available to the public for $60, people will start to shy away from KS. Projects like this one(and a couple others) have made me very cautious in backing others. What's worse, a lot of projects tout Kickstarter "exclusives", which are then lumped in with retail as well. Let's face it, it's not just big companies that take advantage of or play to a consumer's weaknesses; anyone that is trying to make a profit will do that. There's no ethics in capitalism. And why not? It works. And we consumers fall for it every time. Nothing wil change :)

Regarding the fact that I could now go buy this game for cheaper online: this is why I no longer back projects that don't offer significant extras or Kickstarter-exclusives. It is an insult to us backers that other people can now buy it for cheaper. I would not have backed this if it was a campaign today (even if the game might be great, which I don't know because I haven't played yet).

    26. Richard Gray on June 27, 2013

I guess it did say it was a big box game, didn't it? :-D

    27. Michael Caldwell on June 27, 2013

I have played three games now with my gf; I think she likes it more than I do! My only issue was the price point, but that will pass quickly. A lot of dice add up, I suppose. Anxious to see what is planned for an expansion; seems like there is room to grow. I would like to see more of the CASTLE aspect of Castle Dice; it is difficult to grow an impressive structure with the limited cards provided.

    28. Jeff Buckey on June 27, 2013

I received my game the other day, but haven't had a chance to read the rules or play it yet. The components are very nice though and I'm anxious to try it out.

even if they were selling at a lost its still 20 off for the consumer haha

    30. Michael Black (deleted) on June 25, 2013

The two online stores selling at $45 and $51 are taking a loss. They're just trying to get more people in the doors, so to speak.

    31. Peter W. Lenz on June 25, 2013

Got the game, it looks good, can't wait to play!

    32. Chris Sessoms on June 25, 2013

Fair enough about the box, I didn't even think of those reasons and I must of missed the update so what I did was I just put mine into a quarriors box and if it gets expanded I can simply put it back.

    33. Michael Caldwell on June 25, 2013

Also just discovered you can buy the game online for $45. That's....well....great.

    34. Michael Caldwell on June 25, 2013

Game received today. Looks good, though the price seems a bit steep once it is in your hands. Will be trying it this weekend.

For everybody that's wondering about the size of the box, it was discussed in Update #26.

BTW, this is just crying out for an iOS version.

    39. Michael Black (deleted) on June 24, 2013

Just wanted to thank everyone for a great and successful game! And it was ON TIME! A true rarity for KickStarter projects. I'm not sure I like the ridiculous size of the box--seeing as it's 99% air--but whatever. Can't wait to play this thing!

    40. Jeff Petersen on June 24, 2013

I got mine today. Yay! A couple slightly dinged corners, but no worries there. I did wonder about the height, but the update explanation seems fair. Hope for an expansion! (And for MSFG.)

Reading the rule book now... In Iowa.

Box just arrived - and that is quite a monster of a box! Quality of everything seems terrific, and I can't wait to play this with the family tonight. Congrats to the team for getting this out - one of my favorite campaigns to date... Nice work!

Just got my copy of the game 5 minutes ago!! First, that box is insane! Second, everything looks to be great quality and the insert is pretty awesome! Lastly, if anyone had their heart set on their art print being of the farmer...I am more than willing to trade, just let me know:o)
