If you know me, you know that my passion is making music. I have a large collection of new songs and I would like your help to get them out into the world. Kickstarter is a great way to ask you for that help. In return for pledging money towards this project you will get to own and listen to this new music. There are also a number of premiums available which correspond to different pledge amounts.
I have two new records in the works. The first record is just me and my acoustic guitar and harmonica. It is recorded to sound as if I were sitting in your living room and playing for you.
On the second record I sing and play electric guitar, backed up by my current band, and some guest musicians on background vocals and various instruments. Most of my previous records have been just me and my guitar and I am very excited by the prospect of making a record that will have a more full, textured sound.
Most of the songs on these records are original compositions in a variety of styles: pretty instrumental music, rock and roll, Afro-pop (yes indeed!), a reggae tune, some Coltrane/Sharrock inspired jazz, and even a song sung in Italian. Two or three of the songs will be on both albums so you can hear me playing them both acoustic and with a band.
Both projects will be recorded, mixed and mastered at Machines With Magnets, a great studio in Pawtucket RI, where I’ve recorded my last 3 records. In fact, the acoustic album has already been recorded. If this Kickstarter is successful I’ll be able to release the acoustic album before the end of 2014. The electric album and all the premiums will be delivered by March of 2015.
My expenses include: recording/mixing/mastering in a professional studio, paying the musicians who appear on the recordings, and paying for graphic design and tech support work.
If I do not make my funding goal I will not receive any of the money and all pledges will be returned! Please pledge as generously as you can!
Thank you very much for making these projects happen. I cannot do it without you.
Risks and challenges
The biggest creative challenge of this project will be arranging the songs for the electric record--that is, deciding which instruments should play which parts and how many musical parts there should be. How to make the songs sound full and exciting but not overdoing it? (Iggy Pop made sleigh bells work just fine, but not everyone can pull that off.) I am up for this new, creative challenge, and I'll think I'll come out on the other end as a better arranger and maybe even a better songwriter.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
