 The game:

  • From 2 to 8 players.
  • From 8 to 30 minutes of play time.
  • English and Spanish rules.
  • Flavor text in cards in English only (Perdón amigos).

The Adventure Quest Card Game is a "Beating Card Game", meaning that each turn you have to play cards that match or overcome the last played card. There are 75 weapon cards in the deck, that each player has to use to beat other players. There's also a set of special items with unique effects that players can use strategically to alter the course of the play.

The goal of the game is to be the first one to beat all your enemies using your secret loot cards, or at least not be the last man standing.
Each weapon card is numbered according to its power, and each turn, the player has to play cards that at least match the power value of the last card played by an opponent.

Seems, pretty simple, but the game is not just that. The interesting part of this game are the "Loot Stacks".

At the beginning of the match, each player is dealt 3 Loot Stacks. Each stack is composed of 1 covered card that nobody can know and 1 uncovered card on top. These stacks can only be used whenever each player has discarded all their cards and there is no deck left to draw from, and adds a random trait to the game that sometimes can bless you and others may curse you.

The Adventure Quest Card Game is our first game to be launched as creators, but has a whole lot of story behind. When the creator Miguel (A.K.A. Kopo) was still in college, 11 years ago, he and a few friends started adding and modifying rules to an existing local card game that used Spanish Playing Cards. That is the origin of the first version of The Adventure Quest Card Game.
Over the last 11 years, a lot of rules were added or modified, we brought the game to a standard and balanced rule set, and we played.
Oh boy we played... We've played in class recess; we played when having breaks studying for our finals; we played with our family and our friends, and they liked it! The game started to spread. It was played in Canada, Germany, France, where it was taught by our family and friends, to people from many other countries.

The game is now still easy to learn, and it has a bunch of special cards for balance and varied game mechanics. Many of the people introduced to it have loved it, and we love that the seed that grew into this actual game has had such acceptance.

With the current version of the game, we've noticed that the game is perfect for introducing people with small relation to more complex card and board games into play, and being fast rounds, it's also perfect to be played in small breaks and bringing it everywhere.

What's in the box??? As Brad Pitt said in Se7en, this is what the basic Adventure Quest Card Game box will have.

But we have a lot of content we had to keep outside the initial version and that we are willing to add, and it'll be shown to you as we reach the goal and the stretch goals.

Hey! We haven't even reach our straight goal! It's too soon to talk about stretch goals, but we want you to know one thing: We have them, and we have content to add. Not just a revamped design. REAL content. New mechanics, new game modes, new cards... and many of this stuff it's going to be Kickstarter Exclusive content, just for you, because we like you and we love that you are here sitting, reading our project and supporting our dream of creating games. All the content unlocked by achieving the goals will be incorporated to the game immediately, so everyone will receive the full package.

Why is not already in the basic set, you may be asking yourself. Well, we have to rely a bit on the scale economy and we'll be able to add this content if there is enough demand cut our production costs. If we were filthy rich, we'd launch this game with so many stuff we'd have to make a bigger box. In fact, we already incorporated one of these goals into the basic set, which is "Magic Weapons", as we feel that makes the game more fun.

So, in resume... This is a big coming soon.

When we'll publish this content? We'll post the content to be incorporated as we reach the previous stretch goal, so when we reach our initial goal, we'll publish the full content that would be included if we reach the stretch goal. We'll be revealing some content as we approach the goal anyway, and we'll be showing the final designs for weapons as we give them the final OK.

¡Oye!

Rule set:

Preparations.

  • Shuffle the deck and put 3 covered cards forming 3 heaps in front of each player. Nobody can see these cards.
  • Put 1 uncovered card on top of each single heap. These heaps are the "Loot stacks".
  • Deal each player 3 cards. These will be their Hands.
  • Now, and only now, before starting the game. Each player can swap any card from the hand with any uncovered card.
  • Place the rest of the deck in a common space between the players where anyone is able to draw cards.

Game Space.

This is how each player should see the game space.
This is how each player should see the game space.

Special rule: You'll be playing cards into the common heap. If at any time (Believe me, it'll happen eventually) there is no card in the heap and a player has to play a card, the effective value of the empty common heap is 0, so you can always play whatever you want.

The Cards.

Normal Weapon Card: Numbered from the least powerful to the most powerful: 1 to 15, these will be your everyday cards. There's 4 sets of these in the basic game.

Magic Weapon Card: A weapon card with a special effect. You'll play it whenever you would be able to play a regular card with the same power level, with some differences: Every Magic Weapon Card will have a powerful different effect that will affect the game, and once used, the card has to be removed from the game. The border of the card will be tinted in a different color and (not shown) the card will have a reserved space for the action text.

Special Item: Reset Shield. This powerful item is one of the resources you'll have whenever the common heap top card starts becoming too big.
As with all the Special Items, you can use the Reset Shield as a response to any card on top of the common heap. This card effect allows the player to play another card or group of cards, effectively reseting the Common Heap power race. Once used, this card stays on the heap and can be reused by any player that takes the penalty.

Special Item: Invisibility Shield. This powerful item is another of the resources you'll have whenever the common heap top card starts becoming too big. As with all the Special Items, you can use the Invisibility Shield as a response to any card on top of the common heap. This card effect allows the player to skip this turn. This effect is helpful when dragging or slowing the power race in the Common Heap, or as a last resort against the top weapons. Once used, the card will stay in the Heap and will be able to be reused by any player that takes the penalty.

Special Item: Eraser Shield. This powerful item is another of the resources you'll have whenever the common heap size starts becoming too big. As with all the Special Items, you can use the Eraser Shield as a response to any card on top of the common heap. This card effect is to remove the whole Common Heap from the play, setting it apart. It's one of the most valuable cards, as it quickens the game by reducing the number of cards in play. This card is removed with the rest of the heap, and the current player turn ends.

Start of the Game.

(We leave up to you the method to choose the first player. We usually turn each other dealing and play clockwise, so the first is the player to the left of the dealer, but you may want to draw sticks, play rock-paper-scissors-lizard-spock, or do a last-man standing in a tequila shots competition. We leave that to you)

The first player chooses a card or combination of cards with the same power value from his hand and plays it in the common heap area, then draws cards until his hand reaches the minimum cards and passes the turn.

You can play a group of cards of the same power. Magic weapons can be played with the rest of the normal weapons, their effect will apply and there will be removed from the game.
You can play a group of cards of the same power. Magic weapons can be played with the rest of the normal weapons, their effect will apply and there will be removed from the game.

From now on, each player has to play any card o group of cards of the same value, that has an equal or higher power value than the top card of the heap. For your consideration, If at any moment, there is a special card on top of the heap, use the first value in the heap instead.
Special cards don't have any power value and can be played in response to any card value. After playing cards, if the player has less than 3 cards in hand, and there is still deck to draw from, the player will draw until having 3 cards in hand or there are no more cards left to draw in the deck and then, passes the turn.

If a player has to play a card, but none of his cards are equal or higher than the top common heap card value, and has no special cards to play, the player takes the common heap into his hand an passes the turn.

Each player plays cards and tries to play avoiding the penalty of having to draw the common heap. When a player has played all the cards in hand and there is no deck left to draw, he can start playing the Loot Stacks.

Loot Stacks.

When a player reaches the moment where he can't draw more cards and has no cards in hand to play, he starts using his 3 Loot Stacks.
Each turn that he may play a card, he has to use the cards in his Loot Stacks, in a certain order: First all the uncovered cards, and after all the uncovered cards have been used, then the hidden cards.

This phase has some particular mechanics regarding the Loot Stacks:

You play your uncovered cards as they were part of your hand, but not from your hand. This means, that if you are in this phase, and still have any uncovered cards left to use, but this cards are not playable, you have to draw the common heap into your hand, and won't be able to use the uncovered cards until you get rid of your hand, again.

You can play uncovered cards with the same value or type in group, just like in your hand.

Whenever a player has used all his uncovered cards, has no cards in hand, and has to play a card, he can now play his covered cards in the Loot Stacks. They can only check one covered card each turn, so they will play the card if it's playable, or place it back covered in the Loot Stack if it's not. The Loot Stack cards won't go to their players hands if it's not by taking the common heap.

As with the uncovered cards in the Loot Stacks, you can't play these cards if you have cards in hand.

Unlike the uncovered cards, you cannot play the covered cards in group. This means, that even if you know that you have a pair of 10s in your two remaining Stacks, you can only play one of them. The only way of using more than one covered card is when one of the covered cards is a "reset shield" card, which allows you to play another card.

The first player who gets rid of all his/hers Loot Stacks wins the game.

We are not illustrators, so we are working with Rubén Sánchez, a great artist, who is currently in charge of design of our weapons and items artwork. The current version of the cards you are seeing are using GPL artworks free for commercial use, that resemble what we are looking for, but we feel that the final product you'll receive needs to be much more attractive.
You can check Ruben's work in his FB page:

https://www.facebook.com/rubensanchezilustrador

We come from the Small Medium Business and entrepreneur scene, and we started working together as a Team in October 2014, although we knew each other much before. Over that time, we have enriched each other with our work and knowledge, and one of our discoveries was our fondness for board, role and card games. One day, Miguel taught Chema and Antonio about Adventure Quest, and after a couple of days, we thought that the game was really good to be played broadly.

Together we may summarize 40 years of experience as players of videogames, card games, board games and roleplaying games, and 3 years as developers of smartphone games. We've also worked on gamification and gamestorming processes for companies.

Risks and challenges

The Adventure Quest Card Game is fully designed (Mechanics and game-play) and broadly tested over the last 11 years. The only thing left is the artwork, which is currently in progress, right as you are reading this very line.

We have already located a provider for all the production of the game, who has been working in the game industry for many years.

The biggest risk is that you can be a bit addicted to the game after a couple of rounds, and as we've planned with a generous margin for the delivery, one of the biggest risks is that you may receive the game earlier than the assorted date, and maybe a small delay from the time we send you the email confirming the shipping, and the delivery, depending on how far from Spain you are sending the package.

Lately, we would like to add that if you are ordering the game to be delivered to the International Space Station, you may expect a delay in the shipping, that may be lost if the supplies ship burns in the atmosphere, and that we will charge you extra for the Special Delivery.
