Lion/Lamb is the debut EP from worship leader Joshua Leventhal. The heart behind this project, these songs, is music for the church to sing in corporate worship to Christ as His bride. Each song focuses in on a particular aspect of God’s character and mines to its depths.
There are many times I would hear a particular idea briefly touched on in congregational worship music but explored no further; the desire here is to look at some of those beautiful realities of who our God is and allow them room to breathe and take shape in our hearts. Stylistically, the album varies significantly, from the roaring anthemic tide that is “Dwell,” to the soulful negro-spiritual feel of “Wash,” to the intimate yet ultimately declarative beauty of “Jealous.” Despite the range of stylistic expressions however, each song is, from head to toe, a piece of me—an expression of the voice that God has given me. This EP is the beginning of a project that I hope can eventually expand into a larger tapestry—it is beginning with focus in the hopes of ending with scope.
Music is one of the gifts I am most grateful to Jesus for weaving into the fabric of Creation, let alone ways to adore Him. And yet I like so many others in this age of streaming services and seemingly limitless digital consumption, often find myself taking it for granted. I believe worship through music to be one of the greatest outworkings of loving the Lord our God with all our heart, soul and mind. It is holistic; as we magnify the name of Jesus we are ourselves transformed. I’m writing music with the hopes of providing a means for the church to love the Lord our God with our heart, soul, and mind, and to better understand His love towards us. I’m also asking you to join in this journey with me.
Risks and challenges
The challenge I face in this project is that I simply have never done this before! However, I am surrounded by people who will help ensure this EP will be the very best it can possibly be. Ryan DeZwaan of Kelowna-based studio Top Floor Recording, is engineer and producer on the album. He brings with him his incredible prowess and experience-not to mention the group of killer musicians I have the pleasure of arranging and tracking these songs with.
The number I arrived at to successfully fund this project takes into account all the tracking/mixing/mastering, as well as paying the musicians I work with, the album art and other graphic design, digital and print distribution, funding of rewards for the backing, and the cut that Kickstarter takes from a funded project. Any additional funds raised will go towards paying my musicians better as well as purchasing some very much needed musical gear that I am currently lacking.
It is a tremendous blessing to be able to do this project in its entirety this affordably.
