About this project

A PERSONAL JOURNEY THROUGH THE ENTIRE NES LIBRARY

My 25+ year passion for the NES led me to review every North American released NES game by myself. From July 2010 to March 2014, I played and reviewed all 754 games on my site, questicle.net, otherwise known as "The Quest to Review Every NES Game." From fantastic classics like Castlevania and Legend of Zelda to forgettable entries like Beetlejuice and Rollerblade Racer to unlicensed fare like Rolling Thunder and Bible Adventures: every game - good, bad, and curious - was covered.

To commemorate this experience, I'm creating a book that highlights each game with screenshots, box art, and a fully edited, revised review different from those currently featured on questicle.net. The games will be ordered by chronological release, but there will also be an A-Z game index in the back of the book. The book will serve as both a reference guide, similar to annual music or movie guides, and as a visually appealing coffee table book.

Most pages will feature two reviews.

Though the video game book genre is growing, there are still a limited amount on the market today. Books that cover a console's entire library are virtually nonexistent. "The NES Compendium" will be one of the rare few to offer a singular perspective on the works of an entire console. And with the NES recently celebrating its 30th anniversary, there is no better time to pay tribute to the ever-popular system. Whether you grew up on the NES, but have since stopped playing games, or you remain an active gamer who loves learning about the medium's history, "The NES Compendium" will provide memories of the NES games you grew up with and teach you about the games you never knew existed.

FOREWORD BY JEREMY PARISH!

PRODUCTION:

"The NES Compendium" has been in the works for nearly two years. The revised reviews are nearly complete and the layouts are almost finished. The book will be sent to the publisher in April, a month after the Kickstarter has ended. This will allow me and my layout artist time to refine any last-minute details. The printing of the book will take between 4-8 weeks, which will get the books to me by May or June. The moment I receive them, I will begin mailing them out to backers. And, of course, I will keep all my backers updated via Kickstarter throughout the process.

COST:

The total amount needed to fund the Kickstarter comes from the following:

Printing the books/Shipping costs: 75%

Fees/taxes (including Kickstarter, Payment Processing, marketing, federal/local taxes): 25%

PRINTING:

Due to their competitive pricing, I will be using Lightning Press. The NES Compendium will be printed in America, not China.

SHIPPING/DELIVERY:

Hardcover book costs includes shipping within the United States. Because of the size of the book, international shipping will be more expensive. International shipping prices are not accounted for within the budget or the reward tiers, and may vary greatly, depending on your location. I have added international shipping prices for certain countries to the reward tiers. If your country is not on the reward tier and you would like a shipping quote, contact me via Kickstarter and I will respond as promptly as possible. I will be using USPS to ship out the books.

Risks and challenges

This book is not endorsed or authorized by Nintendo. All game art, screenshots, and trademarks are copyright of the companies within and are appropriated under fair use. While fair use is never a guaranteed right, because I am critiquing these games, my inclusion of the box art and screenshots does not seem excessive. Should any legal issues arise during the Kickstarter, I will keep all the backers updated about where the project will go next.
