Make your own miniatures
If you are a makey kind of a person and want to get into the world of 3D modelling then this could be just what you're looking for.
The Modelling Miniatures Core Book is the start point. It's 260 pages with over 600 images, and includes 288 model files. It sounds quite heavy but the text is quite sparse and I think you'll find it quite quick to work through.
It's based around Sculptris 3D Sculpting software from Pixologic and also uses Meshmixer from Autodesk. Both of these software packages can be downloaded free.
The guide walks you through the process of creating a set of template parts which can be configured and posed into a figure. You'll then be shown how to combine the parts into a single model, add layers of detail, create a printable file and check the files printability.
There's also some information about 3D sites which may be of interest to show off your work, connect with other modellers, have your models printed, share and even sell your models.
Everything is taken in small easy steps and the files created along the way are included in the package.
The book has already been written and is available for download straight away. It covers the complete process from nothing to finished model but if you are still hungry for more then read on...
Following on from the Core Book, I will be producing a series of Source Books. Each of the source books will walk through the process of creating six sets of models similar to those you would buy from your favourite miniature makers. The first in the series will be the Dwarves Source Book.
We'll make three dwarf regiments (king's guard, rangers and shield maidens), a dwarven king set, a dwarven cannon and crew and a dwarf hero with loch monster! In addition to the book you will receive all the model files we make along the way as part of the package.
There are more Source Books in the pipeline including Orcs and Goblins, Lizardmen, Space Dwarves, Lovecraftian and Zombie Apocalypse.
I will be working on the Dwarves Source Book for the next six to eight weeks and expect to have it ready for delivery sometime in July. During the project I will post updates so you can see how things are coming along.
If you want to check out the Modelling Miniatures Core Book, then I have a sample version available which includes the first four chapters for free.
You can download it here
It includes an overview of the Sculptris software and an introduction to my modelling process.

Risks and challenges
The biggest risk is overshooting the deadline. I tend to be over optimistic with my timescales. All I ask is a little bit of patience. My last project was due in April 2018 and delivered mid May 2018.
The July deadline is my expectation of when the book will be ready, but if it takes longer, then it takes longer. I'll do my best and I'll keep you all informed along the way.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
