With this project I will spend 1 month developing a set of 5 dwarf miniatures and documenting a simple step by step guide of the whole process, from nothing to an OBJ or STL file ready for printing or uploading to sites like Shapeways to have it printed for you.
There are 4 stretch goals, each representing another month of development and another set of miniatures. Each unlocked stretch goal will be included at no extra cost. So the more backers I get, the better value backers will get.
The first set of models will be a full regiment of dwarf soldiers including a basic troop, a standard bearer, a musician, a commander and a champion. The dwarf soldiers will be uniformly equipped with chainmail armour, winged helmet, cape, buckler sword and shield. Each figure will be separately posed and detailed but will use common design objects to minimise the workload and to gain uniformity between the figures.
Step by step guide
Using pictures and sparse text I will provide a step by step guide which will quickly have you up and running designing your own miniatures. I will show you how to create an armature model to set your pose, how to get the scale right for printing and how to build up levels of detail to create your own masterpiece.
The models you create will depend on your own artistic talents, but the guide will teach you the basics and time and effort will help you to develop those skills. You will receive my example models too, so you can compare against them, or even borrow elements from them.
The software I will be using is called Sculptris and is available for free. I will also introduce sites which I have found useful such as Sketchfab for displaying and sharing your work, and Shapeways for printing your miniatures or even setting up your own shop to sell them.
OBJ & STL files
OBJ & STL files are the most common files for 3D printers. I will provide the files so you can print my example models. The files can also be imported into other 3D software and easily converted into another format if required.
I will provide these for all my example models so you can load and edit my models in Sculptris.
The stretch goals are where things really start to get exciting. Each stretch goal adds another month of development with the models and step by step guides that come with it. These all come as part of your package at no extra cost, so help me to share the project and unlock as many goals as possible so everyone gets much more bang for their buck.
Stretch goal #1 £500 Dwarf King
If funding reaches £500 the dwarf king will be unlocked and added for all backers at no extra cost.
A dwarven king model seated on a throne along with dwarven queen and an advisor and the same character again posed in battle armour.
Stretch goal #2 £1000 Dwarf Rangers
If funding reaches £1000 the dwarf rangers will be unlocked and added for all backers at no extra cost.
A full regiment of dwarf rangers including a basic troop, a standard bearer, a musician, a commander and a champion. Dwarf rangers will be uniformly equipped with leather armour, cloak, crossbow and shield.
Stretch goal #3 £1500 Dwarf Cannon
If funding reaches £1500 the dwarf cannon will be unlocked and added for all backers at no extra cost.
A cannon and 3 crew to support your troops.
Stretch goal #4 £2000 Dwarf Shield Maidens
If funding reaches £2000 the dwarf shield maidens will be unlocked and added for all backers at no extra cost.
A full regiment of dwarf shield maidens including a basic troop, a standard bearer, a musician, a commander and a champion. Shield maidens will be uniformly equipped with plate armour, helmet, shield, spear and axe.
Share and unlock the stretch goals
Just 50 backers can unlock the first stretch goal, each subsequent goal can be unlocked by just 25 backers. 125 backers will unlock everything, so if you know someone who may be interested please share my project because I for one want to see those shield maidens. If you have a facebook group that may be interested, please share a link (check with admins first to see if it's okay to do so).

Risks and challenges
The main risk here is timings. Designing these models can be quite time consuming. I am allowing about 4 days development for each figure. If things do take a little longer then I will put in the extra time to finish the models promised to a good standard.
The step by step documentation will be created on the fly using screenshots and text will be kept to an absolute minimum. Once the models are complete the documentation will be reviewed and tidied up and compiled in PDF documents for easy access.
Each set of models with their associated documentation will be made available at the end of each months development.
I have already created the first Dwarf Soldier trooper and don't anticipate any problems after all I am essentially repeating the same workflow, however if I do encounter any problems then I will resolve them and include them in the documentation.
I will be available and contactable through facebook and if anyone has any problems I will do my best to resolve them.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
