About this project

Thank you for watching. “Robo-san and Wan-chan” is Ben Dallman and Stephen Henry’s senior thesis project at the Kansas City Art Institute. The collaboration seeks to create an animated depiction of Eric Hibbeler’s Japanese Childrens book with the same title. Working alongside, Eric Hibbeler personally drafts his book’s aesthetic into the film.

The story follows an ordinary day with Robo-san and Wan-chan at the park playing catch. Moments into their game Robo-san throws the frisbee high into the clouds. Wan-chan flies after it. After several moments without any sign of Wan-chan, Robo-san decides to find his friend. After unsuccessfully being able to find Wan-chan in the clouds he continues his journey around the planet in hopes of reuniting with Wan-chan.

Robo-san and Wan-chan is a fusion of painting and 3D animation. Eric Hibbeler sets the stage with the dynamic backdrops and atmospheric effects. Digitally painting with a stylus and tablet, Eric is able to mimic the fluidity of animation in his designs.

Ben and Stephen bring the characters and backgrounds elements to life. After being built in 3D, Robo-san and Wan-chan are animated frame-by-frame into their odyssey.

Your donation will help ensure this story is brought to audiences across the nation. We plan to use the funds to cover the cost of entry fees to film/ animation festivals, the creation of dvds, and art books. The average film festival submission ranges from 20 to 100 dollars depending on its location and prestige. This project has been an amazing journey for us. We hope you share our enthusiasm for the story and the method of its depiction.

Thank you.

-Eric, Ben, Stephen
