AFTER A SUCCESSFUL launch in 2015, Artenol Magazine, an arts publication unlike any other, needs your help to expand its content, increase its web presence and grow its circulation. But first, a little about us.
Artenol Magazine is a quarterly glossy arts publication with a different and distinctive die-cut shape for each edition. Founded in late 2014 by artist and satirist Alexander Melamid in collaboration with financier Gary Krimershmoys, and magazine editor and designer David Dann, the magazine was intended to provide new voice in the art world, one that would challenge prevailing notions about contemporary art.
Melamid observed that contemporary art, long a hermetic activity, has become so obscure and senseless that even insiders are left in the lurch. Artenol, the magazine, was created to address this problem with a dose of long-overdue common sense, straight talk and, most importantly, humor. Its mission is to reveal the truth behind the contemporary art world’s new clothes by cutting through the pretense, jargon and artifice of its practitioners, promoters and beneficiaries.
Artenol was developed throughout the winter and spring of 2014-15, and was successfully launched in July 2015. Described as a “cure for what ails art,” the magazine’s name was derived from the commercial over-the-counter analgesic, Tylenol. To date, Artenol has published five editions and is currently working on a sixth. Writers for the publication have included Francine Prose, Ian Frazier, Lawrence Wechsler, the late Michael Ratner, Zinovy Zinik, Jonathan Meades, Martin Rowson, Brooke Allen and many others. Cartoonist Art Spiegelman has also contributed. Positive reviews from The New York Times, The World Post, The Huffington Post, New York Magazine, Public Radio International and Stack have help create a worldwide interest in the magazine. Most recently, the magazine was named one of the best new publications of 2015 by the Library Journal.
But Artenol's successful launch was only the first step. We would now like to expand the magazine's content by bringing to print pieces by authors from other disciplines, providing a greater diversity of viewpoints and of ideas on the arts. We would also like to expand our web and digital platforms, perhaps inaugurating a tablet version of the magazine with interactive elements. In addition to these goals, we wish to expand our international distribution in order to fulfill requests for the magazine by readers from abroad. But these plans take money. Hopefully, your money.
As a powerful crowdfunding platform for creative endeavors of all types, Kickstarter has an impressive track record for generating revenue to make many projects a reality. But for a Kickstarter project to be successful, it must reach or exceed its funding goal before the end of the campaign. If that does not happen, your money will be returned and Artenol will not benefit from your generosity. So we ask that if you would like to support us, please share this campaign on your social media networks, because greater visibility only increases our chances of success.
Risks and challenges
Because Artenol is already established as a viable and proven publication, the risks involved with our expansion project are minimal. The major challenges we face are improving international distribution, but we have several active agents working on our behalf and we anticipate a strong positive response from European distributors. Our revenue stream is also problematic (hence this Kickstarter campaign!), but with increased distribution and a greater web presence, we hope to overcome these obstacles.
