In 1998, I began writing on nights and weekends to get a story out of my head. You see … I couldn't contain it anymore. What started as a way to pass the time—allowing my imagination to wander while I worked a physically-demanding yet boring job—was taking on a life of its own.
The characters had become like old friends, their past, present, and future somehow woven together with mine. The locales seemed like places I'd lived, some I'd barely survived and others I'd like to return to someday. The story was growing more real and more complex by the day.
Thirteen years later, I self-published the first trilogy of The Awakened series. The books were so well-received by readers that they shot to the top of Amazon's bestseller lists for epic fantasy and science-fiction. That fan support is what launched my independent author career, allowing me to write and publish the second trilogy, a four-volume prequel series, a psychological thriller short story, and a cyberpunk novel.
Today, the publishing world is very different. The fiction market is flooded with stories both excellent and awful. But the surge of readership that came with the the advent of eReading devices hasn't kept pace. Consumers now have access to more free hours of entertainment on the Internet than hours in their lifespans. With so much competing for readers' attention, it's harder than ever to make a living as a fiction author (you can read more about my struggle here).
Meanwhile, fans are anxious to know when the next Awakened book will be available.
So I decided to run an experiment and see what might happen if I changed up my business model. Instead of depending on Amazon rankings to determine whether or not I could spend several months writing a book, I decided to come directly to you … the reader.
With the exception of editing, I handle all aspects of the production process myself, including:
- Cover art design
This means, most of the expenses for this project fit into one big category called Jason's Time. Reaching the minimum funding goal of $9,500 will cover my time over the next 3 to 5 months as I create Book 7 of The Awakened.
Which begs the question … is my writing worth your pledge?
No brain candy here. I want to make you think. Worry. Bite your fingernails. Laugh out loud. Cry into your pillow. Throw your Kindle out the window when you don't know how else to express yourself (one of my readers almost did this!).
But maybe you've never heard of me … or my stories. If not, here's a sampling of what readers have to say:
"Jason Tesar is an author to watch and he has now gained a spot on my list of favorite fantasy authors." —Rayven (from a review of Awaken His Eyes: The Awakened Book 1)
"He sets the standard for imagination, descriptive writing, fully developed characters and places." —R. Logsdon (from a review of Paths of Destruction: The Awakened Book 2)
"He truly has a gift when it comes to storytelling! From character development to the description of their surroundings to the amazing battle scenes, everything was flawless … Jason, please, please, please, write more books!" —Rainie (from a review of Hands to Make War: The Awakened Book 3)
"I don't know why one of the major movie companies hasn't snatched these books up and made a blockbuster out of them??? All of Jason's published work is FANTASTIC. I start reading and before I know it … it is 5am." —lovetoread (from a review of Seeds of Corruption: The Awakened Book 4)
"The series combines hard SciFi, Social SciFi, Fantasy, Mystery, Drama and Religion into a fantastic tale of prophesy and fulfillment. I would put Jason into the class of Asimov, Clarke and Bradbury for sure." —marcelmib (from a review of Hidden from Men: The Awakened Book 5)
"… Jason Tesar's style and voice are reminiscent of some of the best sci-fi story tellers I've read... J.R.R. Tolkien and Frank Herbert to name two. He has the uncanny ability of taking me completely outside of myself and into his story." —Renee Vogel (from a review of Foundations of the World: The Awakened Book 6)
In addition to the satisfaction of knowing you're helping me create the next installment of The Awakened, your pledge will also get you some great rewards. Here's an overview:
*Please note that the audiobooks are a limited reward and only available at the $100 pledge level.
So, how long will it take to produce this novel?
While every writing project has its own unique challenges, I've honed my creative process over the years. Here's my typical timeline:
- 1-2 weeks: brainstorming, storyboarding, & outlining
- 6-8 weeks: researching, writing the 1st draft
- 1-2 weeks: writing the 2nd draft
- 2-4 weeks: editing (outsourced), cover art design, book description
- 1 week: incorporating the edits into the final draft
- 1 week: formatting & publishing the eBook
- 1-2 weeks: formatting & publishing the paperback
TOTAL: 13 to 20 weeks
Through your generosity—and your willingness to share this project with your friends—it's possible we may exceed the minimum funding goal. If that happens, here are a couple stretch goals we can shoot for:
- $19,000 – This amount would also fund the creation of Book 8.
- $28,500 – This amount would also fund the creation of Book 9, allowing me to complete the final trilogy and bring The Awakened series to its epic conclusion!
***WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD! Continue only if you've read Book 6 of The Awakened and Volume 4 of Wandering Stars!***
At the end of Book 6 (of The Awakened), Kael is back in Orud with his reunited family. The remnants of Null have begun converging on Orud, both for the protection Kael can offer them as well as to help him achieve his ultimate goal … which is to destroy the last four Wandering Stars.
We know from Volume 4 (of Wandering Stars) that those enemies are Arakiba, Danel, Turel, and Ezekiyel. We also know that the civilization they had created was far more advanced than those of their colleagues.
I don't want to ruin Book 7 by giving away any surprises, so I'll just leave you with a couple general ideas to think about.
At the end of Book 6, when the parallel universes merged, the phenomenon that brought Kael’s family and friends together also placed them in the same world as the remaining Wandering Stars. And Kael's most recent victory had a massive impact on the war in the Eternal realm, establishing him as a threat to enemies in both places.
I think it's safe to say that, despite everything Kael has been through, his most difficult challenges lay ahead!
Risks and challenges
If I don't reach my minimum funding goal, your pledge won't be processed.
And if I do reach my goal … what could possibly go wrong?
I get kidnapped and taken to a remote monastery, where I'm forced to live out the rest of my days training in martial arts with absolutely no time to write? I slip through a portal and become trapped on a parallel earth, where word processors don't yet exist and scribes are in short supply?
In all seriousness, there is very little risk to investing in this project.
I only outsource one part of the process: editing. Everything else—from brainstorming and outlining, to research, writing, formatting, and cover art—I do myself.
And I've done it successfully, from start to finish, TWENTY-ONE times now!
That's right. I've produced ELEVEN novels (one of them originally a FIVE-part serial), TWO combined editions, ONE reader's companion, ONE short story, and ONE technical writing manual.
