If we beat our Kickstarter goal of $15,000, we hope to cover the additional expenses associated with the project including mastering, duplication, and reproduction. This will also allow us to potentially add additional tracks. Plus there's exclusive rewards unlocked for each stretch goal we meet.
Caleb Chapman’s Crescent Super Band is the world’s top professional big band consisting entirely of young musicians (all are ages 15-18). Although these 25 teens have won international recognition, they come from an unlikely place – the state of Utah! The band includes accomplished vocalists as well as an instrumentation of guitar, bass, drums, percussion, piano/keyboards, and a massive horn section of saxes, trumpets, and trombones. While frequently categorized as “jazz”, the musicians are well versed in many styles including rock, soul, funk, Latin, classical, ska, and indie.
Caleb Chapman, the band’s founder and director, is an award-winning performer, educator, producer, and author. Under his direction, the band has caught the attention of many of today's top artists.
The Crescent Super Band’s new album is entitled, “Don’t Look Down” taken from a lyric in the Imagine Dragons’ song, “On Top of the World”, which we plan to include on the album. The project features an entirely new sound for the band we are calling “alternative jazz and soul”, a significant departure from focus on the Great American Songbook of earlier recordings. But fans can still expect the same high level of energy, musicianship, and passion they have grown accustomed to on previous releases from the band.
While we have yet to finalize the entire album, we plan to include covers of songs we love from:
- Ben Folds (“Landed”)
- The Black Keys (“Gold on the Ceiling”)
- Janelle Monae ("Tightrope")
- Bruno Mars (“Treasure”)
- Jessie J (“Mamma Knows Best”)
- Foo Fighters (“Times Like These”)
- Beyonce (“Crazy in Love”),
- And others still to be determined.
Our last album, “A Crescent Christmas Volume I” was met with great enthusiasm and sold over 4,000 copies in just a matter of weeks. That album was a big step forward for us in recording quality and musicianship. Building on that success and what we have learned, we are ready to make a serious run at a Grammy nomination for the band with this new record!
To help us in that effort we plan to enlist the help of our good friend, three-time Grammy winning member of the Dave Matthews Band, Jeff Coffin, as a guest on the project. We also are hoping to involve members of Neon Trees and Imagine Dragons, both of whom have Utah ties.
We have created some really exciting rewards including pre-release album downloads, exclusive signed album art, private performances by the band, and even a private lesson with Jeff Coffin, the multi Grammy-winning member of the Dave Matthews Band.
But the best reward is being part of the team chasing a Grammy nomination with an entirely new style of music!

DownBeat Magazine has recognized them on several occasions with their prestigious “DownBeat Award” recognizing them as the top young big band in the world. And for the last eight years, they have been named Utah’s “Top Professional Band” in any genre by Utah Best of State, a pretty heavy accomplishment for a bunch of kids.
Their electrifying performances have been featured at many of the world’s most prominent music festivals including venues in Switzerland, the Netherlands, Italy, and France. The band also has a strong national presence with recent performances in Chicago, Boston, New York, LA, Telluride, and their home state of Utah. "Caleb Chapman’s Crescent Super Band has stunned me on many occasions. Not only do they play at the highest level of musicianship I have EVER heard from young musicians, but the musicians also resonate with a passion that I rarely see at ANY level. Amazing!"
JEFF COFFIN, Three-Time Grammy-Winning Member of the Dave Matthews Band

We can’t do this without you!
Risks and challenges
As with any project, there are risks and challenges that we face. The biggest challenge for us in funding this Kickstarter, is convincing our current fan base that this new direction of alternative jazz and soul, which focuses on current artists, is a good one for us. However, this also provides the greatest opportunity for us as we have a path to attract an entirely new audience and dramatically increase record sales.
If our Kickstarter project is fully funded, there are several risks and challenges that we'll face once we start the project itself. The first challenge is securing the help of our lead arranger Sam Cardon. Without his help, the arrangements will lose the professional touch we so drastically need for a Grammy nomination. Plus arranging the music and training each member of Crescent Super Band to perform these new mainstream songs they're not used to performing is a giant challenge to tackle. Although we feel confident that combining the experience of Sam Cardon and the youthful talent of CSB will turn out to be a smooth collaboration, there are always unknown risks.
We understand that getting even one celebrity musician like Jeff Coffin, to agree to perform on the album as a guest artist is a major challenge for a high school big band in Utah. Our hopes of collaborating with multiple celebrity guest artists on Don't Look Down, make this specific CSB album our biggest undertaking to date.
Other challenges and obstacles we'll possibly encounter include: keeping the entire CSB band members together during the summer to record the album or finding alternates to replace those who might be unavailable. Also paying for the song royalties and getting permission to record each cover song can be a lengthy process and may cause delays to the release of our album. Finally there are a whole sleuth of challenges with duplicating and mastering the album so the quality meets the Grammy nominated standards.
Another challenge we face is that by making our intention known of seeking a Grammy nomination, we run the risk of people viewing the album as a failure if that doesn’t happen. We are fully aware of the challenges in fulfilling all of our Kickstarter rewards, especially the rewards that involve other musicians and guest artists. Despite all these challenges we strongly believe that our dream can become a reality with the right combination of people collaborating at the right time on a project we're passionate about. Of course, none of it would be possible without your support of this Kickstarter project. So help us make this dream a reality! Thank-you for all your help!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
