What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About

The Idea.

Have you ever sat down at a computer and just wished you had built it? No? Well that doesn't matter. Building a computer is a great experience that anyone can have, at least with a little help. Our project is made to let people have that experience even if they can't afford it themselves. We are making kits with in depth instructions and all parts included teaching you how to build your own computer. Once we have the resources to do so we will start donating most of the kits, but still have them up for sale for anyone! Not only will this kit help people who can't afford them have a great experience, but also get a great computer! We currently have a working finalized model which has passed our standards. The project is around 70% to 80% done with the only thing that needs finalizing is the manual. Our projected finishing time is May 28. The Kickstarter money will go to, well, kickstarting production, once we start selling our first few kits production will be able to advance a lot faster. 10% to 15% will be used for taxes. While 75% to 85% will go to production, the rest will go to unexpected fees.

Design.

 Stretch Goals

If you don’t know what a stretch goal is it is a goal to improve our project more then is what is the minimum. Unlike the overall goal getting a product made, stretch goals don’t need to be funded to get all the money from Kickstarter. The extra money adds something to work towards so we can constantly improve our product.

  • $2000 - A website to sell our kit on as well as other parts that are compatible so you can improve your computer.
  • $3000 - Monthly sales on our website as well as having a product where people can order their own custom kit with a custom manual, this is so you can still have the building experience but aren’t as limited in model.
  • $3500 - More products on our store as well as better sales and faster shipping.
  • ???? - More to come

Risks and challenges

For this project of donating computers and making manuals, our one and only challenge is money. As some of you may know, computer building is VERY expensive, and to make only three simple ones, it may add up to anywhere from $900 to $1200. Since this is a school project, we are only provided $300 to start but once we get rolling, money shouldn't be a problem.
